Frederick county is holding hearings regarding making English the official language for that county. One objection to this is the increase in the number of Hispanics to the country who do no speak English. And to accomodate this part of the polulation,  I think we all have seen signs, documents, etc. in both English as well as Spanish. However,  there's a cost associated with having to have this done. Should we have street signs, documents, books, pamphlets, etc. in both English and Spanish?. And what about those who come here from other countries who don't speak English?. Are we going to accomodate them by providing the aforementioned in French, Chinese, Indian, etc.?..What say you?

So, are we to assume that the folks that say WE NEED bi-lingual signs are also assuming that Latinos are too stupid to learn English?

reality_check, I say screw them and the burro they sneaked into the country on.

Y3Y3, you have answered your own question I think. It is real interesting how well they understand English when it comes to applying for welfare, public assistance, food stamps, etc. Yet they "No spicka or unnerstan da Englis" when it is convenient to them.

Do you guys remember a few years ago when Florida put on the ballot a vote for Spanish as the official state language? It would appear that Miami's cubano community thought it was larger and possessed more power at the polls that it actually did....of course the bill was voted out...but it was shocking that the attempt was made and some ding-a-ling allowed the measure to get so far as to actually go on the ballot. A sign of the times I suppose.

A few years ago when my son was in elementary school here in Fairfax County, the Public School Information paper was published...I was told... in 150 languages. Hmmmmm. Imagine THAT cost? Well, we, the taxpayers paid for it...and perhaps still do.

I used to think the way Frederick County does. However, since my major at G.W.U. was Latin-American Culture & Civilization, a study program that had a majority of students getting their Masters degree, together with what I learned at Eastern High School during WWII, that we live in the Western Hemisphere, together with googling the other day and reading the problems with language south of the border, well I've changed my mind.

Cost Benefit wise, it's cheaper to have everything bi-lingual. It turns out my most recent research, the constitutions of the countries south of the border, have indigenous peoples to concern themselves with. It's simply cheaper to have English as the primary language in the Western Hemisphere and Spanish as the secondary language. That's the only way we can peacefully help all the countries south of our border to be happy staying south of the border. It would help spread the Lingua Franca to even Brazil who has the best research in the study of Mental Health. All their research is in Portuguese. It's frustrating me. I depend on the brain scientists of Brazil. Shades of Baruch Spinoza!!

I am not Spanish neither American. But I see a big discrimination relating to other languages and other people in this country! The USA is a country of mix immigrant from everywhere. So, Spanish is not the only language after English. Are you going to do the same for French, Germany, Italian, Norwegian, and Portuguese? How about the Chinese which is more than half population in the world? Why don't you ask and make it mandatory for Spanish people to go on school and learn English?
My suggestion is that, as English is an official language in this country, everybody should study and learn it. Shame on Spanish people!

Thank you for your input on this subject livrata. I have always suspected that non-latino foreign born people in the US must feel that it is unfair that only Spanish speaking people are being accomodated when it comes to their failure to learn the English language, as you should feel that way. We shouldn't be giving special treatment to anyone. The language spoken here has always been English. There are plenty of opportunities in this area for people to take ESL classes, we can't make them learn but that doesn't mean we should be obligated to accomodate those that are too lazy or ignorant to learn. I think that accomodating them is the biggest reason why they don't learn, why should they bother when they can get along so well without learning?

"livratr" ...what are you???? ...all our nation's citizens have arrived via the immigrant route through the legal process ...our posts, as you've observed, for the greater part are expressions of outrage over ILLEGALS who are here by virtue of a deliberate choice to violate our nations laws and bring a host of other troubling issues along with them without regard for the well being of nation ...and they have the gall to expect treatment and services they aren't entitled to, bull!!!! ...so because we protest funding services we’ve created and funded explicitly for the benefit of citizens of our communities across this nation you want to say we’re discriminating ...I'm afraid anyone disagreeing with you is handicapped in reasoning with ...I truly believe you have no agenda to advance and possess a simple view of things here in this issue and it will be some time, if ever, when you may have an ability to engage a discussion above the powers of your mind's present development...

…the other nationalities you've mentioned have respected the fact they expect no more than they ask when we are in their nation ...to be prepared and able to communicate with them in their language and accept that we understand we have no entitlement to use public services they’ve worked to make available to their nation's citizens ...

...your thought is a feeble one at best that we’re being discriminatory and unfairly expecting LEGAL immigrants who join our nation to follow the courtesy of communicating in our language and equitably contributing to the support of public services programs!!!!...

THEY DESERVE NOTHING!!!!!! You want to come here the right way and learn the language, "more power to you". Otherwise stay the hell out. They come here, use up our resourses, take our neighborhoods down to nothing, bring in gangs and drugs, etc., etc. Im sick of paying higher taxes to accomodate them. Im tired of working to support them. Im tired of looking and listening to them make crude comments in spanish. It makes me sick to hear them say they cant speak english. Bull S--t. Give them directions to anywhere they can get free anything, they suddenly speak a little english. Im sick of walking past them and smelling nothing but 10 day old Corona. Hello! Showers, mouthwash??? Quit the whining and go the hell back home. We simply do not want you here.

Every other nationality that has come to the States has had to learn English. Why not the Spanish speakers?

Everyone should speak English inside the US, its part of the melting pot.

I also feel that we are overly acoomodating Spanish speaking residents. This country has a number of other immigrants who speak the language of their respective countries; Chinese, French, etc. and the United States is doing NOTHING to accomodate them. And one obvious accomodation is when you call your bank or other business where you can select a certain number on your phone keypad for help in Spanish. If you speak Chinese or another foreign language, you're out of luck since these businesses ONLY provide assistance for Spanish speaking customers.

I guess when you ARE AN ILLEGAL, you aren't properly prepared for live in the USA. Illegals, especially Latinos are not ready, lacking either intelligence, or ambition.

The Vietnamese didn't need the help. But the asian population has TRIED. The Blacks have whined and begged, and not much more. The latinos do even less.

The latino women would do better if they just got off the cell phones! Maybe if they learned about nutrition so they don't end up with fat arms and stomachs at age 20?? WE will end up with higher health care costs because of the rampant ignorance they display. The latino men seem to want to get as drunk as possible and drive around as a sign of macho-ness. We really don't need any more latinos. They have pretty much worn out ANY welcome they might have received, but they just can't learn....
