Oprah Winfrey opened a school for girls in So Africa. She donated $40m for that school. It’s a wonderful thing to do for the girls where they are way behind. If it was not for Oprah, those girls could not go to school and try to become someone in the future. I personally can’t praise Oprah enough for her work! I am unable to express my feelings toward her. Simply, I love her!
However, we also know that charity should begin at home. In this case Oprah went far a way to donate this huge amount of money when at home there are thousands of students need help. In the US, Black kids are behind according to the county tests. Why didn’t Oprah think about them before she went to South Africa? Do you think she has betrayed the people at home? Or, is it because she has given up on her own people since they get opportunity here and are unable to utilize it properly? Perhaps she is experimenting on two sets of people to see who do better when opportunity is given!

What do you think?

This is a hard subject because I love Oprah so much. She stated that the eager to learn was not high enough in American schools. I don't think she has betrayed people at home because we have plenty of schools here vs Africa. She has charities in America so I think this school she has built is her right.

Would you want people telling you how to spend your money? I'd be ticked off if it was tax payer money. But its her money to do with what she wants. At least she is putting her cash to good and not boozing it up day after day like some stars.

destany1, I didn't know that Oprah had said something about the students here. I guess that answers one of my questions about the students here not taking the opportunity and taking every thing for granted. No wonder, I love Oprah! In a way, she has probably given up on some people to a certain extent!

She already said why she didn't build that school here in America...

"I became so frustrated with visiting inner-city schools (in America) that I just stopped going. The sense that you need to learn just isn't there," she said. "If you ask the kids what they want or need, they will say an iPod or some sneakers. In South Africa, they don't ask for money or toys. They ask for uniforms so they can go to school."

Wow, one could almost call that racist...

I think that Oprah is correct in what she is doing. In America the problem in not resources or funding. We have the money and resources to fix the system, we choose not to.

Change needs to be made at the top. I can go on, but I think you get my point.

How can that be racist? Oprah is a smart woman. She knows who deserves the money and education.

Why does it matter? At least she is helping. Society always talk about celebrities not helping. Now, when one helps, people try to tell her where to help. It's her money. She made it and can choose how to spend it.

I am wondering if grandillusion was making a joke about the racist thing. When I read it I laughed my tail off because it seems on these blogs, EVERY time something negative is said about a black person, someone says they are being a racist. I took it as a joke... grandillusion, if I am wrong, I apoligize

Ex-MPD, because of the third section under the Wiki definition for racism,
Racism [3], and/or a generalization of a specific group of people (stereotype); regardless of any explicit belief in superiority or inferiority embedded within such views or preferences.

Which in my mind she did when she compared the drive of inner city youth who are predominantly African American and compared them with the educational drive of South Africans. She also stereotyped inner city youth as lazy, greedy and mis-directed.

That’s my take on it anyway, I’ve been wrong before, but in many of the pieces I’ve read about this topic, a term keeps popping up. “Cosby-esque” – well worth to google news it.

But I agree with destany1, what does it matter.

Maybe Oprah is on to something? Lazy, greedy, mis-directed? Sounds about right to me.

It's her money! When I heard about what she said about American kids I agreed. She's not out of the loop she's see's and is exsposed to
it more then most of us.She'd have to spend a lot more then$40,000,000 here to fix our social
and educational system. She might even see some results.

Of course it matters, destany1 and grandillusion! It’s Oprah we are talking about. Not someone from the street or just another TV personality! Oprah, a world figure when it comes to “girl power,” gets attention from everyone for her action! She is not Rosie Odonel we are talking about. I am sure she has thought thoroughly before she made her decision about South Africa. If she has said what she has said according to you, it tells me how frustrated she is about the minority here. And we should learn from her to make the situation better. When some “Black Law Makers” are asking for an apology from the Whites and only God knows why, our Oprah is putting her mind and money for some Black kids abroad! She could help 4,000 students at home to graduate from college with $40m. She did not do that! Why? We must analyze that to understand the society’s dynamics here. Otherwise, we will keep ourselves in the dark and make us happy with an “apology!”

Wow, I miss blogging I've been busy at work but, I must comment on this one. I hope one day (soon) Americans will realize, no matter how bad your life seems.......we have it alot better than other countries. If in fact that statement about what Oprah said is true. It's sad to know that the first thing that comes out of a child's mouth is something materialistic. Children should have some type of guidance & direction. What happened to hopes, dreams, education & promising careers. A lot of american children are lazy, greedy, spoiled & mis-directed. Children today don't have half of the responsibility, my parents or grandparents had. I mean some teens don't even have household chores!!!!

It's not for me to sit here and talk about anyone else but, it is for me as a parent to make sure that I do my job and raise my child with morals and values. I don't wanna yap about it I wanna be about it. And not have my child growing up thinking that all there is to life is ipods & sneakers I'm not perfect I can only hope to do my best. My son is 4 and he folds his own socks, cleans his own room and, helps with putting away the groceries. Thats a start!
