Is it normal for your pet (dog) to follow you every where? It has become quite annoying, I have had my dog for about 2 or 3 months now and everytime I move he is right behind me. Does it every stop?

It is just like having a child you are the only parent your pet knows. My dog Tyson is almost 2 years old and he does the same thing you almost trip over his 70 pound frame but Tyson does it because he is extremely nosey.Don't sweat it that is the best unconditional love you are ever going to get!

your dog is left home alone for most of the day and just misses you. i love it when i come home to be greeted by my dog and have her follow me around.

warning for all pet owners- i took my dog to get groomed at petsmart. this was my first time taking her there. i usually take her to her vet to get groomed. my dog is only 10lbs and has NEVER EVER been aggressive towards anyone or anything. she rarely barks. well, i pick her up from the petsmart and the groomer tells me that she was very difficult and my dog bit her. i was shocked. my dog seemed stressed. when i took her home, i noticed that she had blood in her urine and then her nose started bleeding. i checked to see if they cut her by accident but it was coming from inside her nose and no external cuts. i was of course very worried and freaked out. i called the petsmart and spoke with the manager who could not explain to me why my dog was bleeding or what had happened to her. i am extremely outraged by mishandling of my dog. i warn others to be very careful! i'm sure there are others whose had great experience w/ petsmart grooming. i am only speaking from my own experience.

Sunshyne5: How old is your dog? Is he 2 or 3 months old or have you had him in your care for that long? I have 4 dogs (ages range from 8 months- 5 years), and they ALL follow me around. They just want some TLC...

Recently, my dog Louis started to chew on corners of the wall around the house. I give him plenty of treats and toys to play/chew on to keep him occupied... does anyone know why he's doing this all of a sudden? I guess the better question is how do I get him to STOP??

I have a baby chihuahua and I have to be aware of where he is at all times since he follows me around ALL the time. I can't wait to come homw to him each day so he can follow me around and shower me with his unsonditional love. How can such love be annoying? It's the only way they know how to express their love!

I have only had him since April, he is 8 years old. When I first got him he was so obedient. Now, he only listens occassionally. When I'm not home or asleep I can wake or walk in to find him on my couch, and he knows that he is not suppose to be on the couch. SO he will jump off and run. When he does something he is not suppose to do, and I'm disciplining him, he will look away and ignore me. He will only obey, my ex... well he's an ex so he is not around. So it's very difficult to get him to obey sometimes. I was thinking of getting him some training but he's already 8 is that too old. He doesnt play with any toys, So I waste money buying them.

Most times when pets behave like that they are either looking for extra attention or like you said he may be missing the ex that's not around anymore. It's his way of acting out and hoping that you fix the problem. Unfortunately, it will take a LOT of patience on your part. Just keep disciplining him in a good and gentle way and try not to let him see that you're angry. Eventually, he'll get back to his good ole self. Have FAITH and goodluck!

I totally agree on not taking your dog to petsmart for grooming. A friend and I took her toy poodle for a puppy cut at Petsmart and the woman trimming her was on the phone the ENTIRE time! Also, another woman had brought in her beagle mix for a trim and they shaved her completely!!!! It was horrible!!! I would NEVER EVER take my dog to Petsmart for grooming!!

DO NOT PATRONIZE "OLDE TOWN SCHOOL FOR DOGS".
I live in Old Town Alexandria. Obviously, Old
Town is a very dog friendly community and I walk my dog everywhere, especially when running errands. I tie her up outside of the post office, the drug store, etc. She is a friendly golden retriever and loves the attention she gets from people passing by. Last week, after having her groomed, I took her for a walk and tied her to the tree outside of my home for 10 minutes so that I could run around to the back of the house. It was a beautiful day, about 75 degrees and sunny. I came back after 10 minutes and she was GONE--no leash, no sign of her. In a panic, I ran up and down the street and then drove up and down the street. About 15 or 20 minutes later, I drove by the Old Town School for Dogs and, on a whim, decided to step in and ask if they knew anything. The OWNER of the shop said he had been walking down the street and saw my "abandoned" dog and TOOK her to his shop. He then proceeded to call ANIMAL CONTROL to pick her up. I was stunned!! I asked him why he didn't wait with the dog for a few minutes or come back and leave a note or leave the dog where she was and then call animal control. He told me that instead of questioning him, I should be thanking him for TAKING my dog and that I should be more responsible. No apologies for the fear and panic that I felt or that my dog must have felt!!! She was a freshly groomed, well-fed dog who was outside for 10 minutes lying under a shaded tree!!! I demanded he return my dog and as I was walking out of this shop, animal

My one maltese used to have horrible stains around her eyes, mouth, and on her feet from chewing them. I read an article about giving her only distilled water to drink. It took about five gallons, but the results were miraculous. Hope this helps someone.

My older dog Tiffany is a certified Pet Therapy dog through PALs (People Animals Love). She visits various facilities through their program. She also visits a couple of other nursing homes on an independent basis. I highly recommend this program. You will always come away with more than you have given.

Washington, DC, Church to Hold Blessing of the Dogs

All dogs and their owners are invited to attend the Blessing of the Dogs at National City Christian Church (5 Thomas Circle, NW, Washington, DC) on Sunday, August 5, 2007, from 10 a.m. to 10:20 a.m. This unique event, which will take place on the front steps of the church, will celebrate our love for our canine friends. Senior Pastor Stephen Gentle will lead the blessing, which also will include a solo music performance by Alia Waheed.

“Dogs and all pets play such a special and important role in so many people’s lives,” explains Pastor Gentle. “This dog blessing is intended to show our gratitude for the companionship, loyalty, and unconditional love that these animals bestow upon us each day.”

All dogs—big and small, young and old—and their companions are encouraged to attend the blessing, which is being held in conjunction with the seventh annual MidCity Dog Days Celebration Weekend. Staff from Dogs by Day, a doggie daycare and boarding facility located on 14th Street, NW, will be on hand to ensure all dogs and their owners are well-behaved, comfortable, and content during the 20-minute blessing. Green Pets, a pet store also located on 14th Street, NW, will provide water and treats for the four-legged attendees. Bottled water, coffee, and muffins will be available for all companions. In addition, a photographer from National City Christian Church will be in attendance to capture the event.

For more information about the Blessing of the Dogs, contact Eric Woodard at bird12@att.net.

FergieAM please note: Did you know that people who train and fight dogs cruise the streets looking for unattended family pets? Did you know that they kidnap these gently raised family pets and take them back to the dog fighting farms? Did you know that the gently raised family pet is thrust into a pen where fighting dogs kill them? Did you know that while they are being ripped apart they scream and beg for mercy? You ought to write a thank you note to the Old Towne School for Dogs. They very well could have saved your dogs life. We live in a different age now. You need to think 3x before you tie your beloved gently raised pet and walk away. Next time you may not be lucky. Remember how your heart jumped into your throat when you discovered your dog gone. Now think of never finding him...never knowing. Please be careful with your dog.

I would like to opine about the pros and cons of having ones dog groomed at PetSmart or Petco. Like hair cutteries these are assembly line grooming parlors. The object is to groom as many dogs as is humanly possible in one day. The groomers have no options and no choice. They just groom until the end of the day. This may lead to problems. Firstly a dog unused to the grooming regimine will suffer anxiety. The groomer makes demands that they do not understand. Secondly, if the dog is not in ready to groom condition, he must be shaved and this can cause anxiety for the dog. Thirdly with so many anxious fearful dogs in one place others who may otherwise not have been fearful, now become fearful. Most dogs have no problem at whichever groomers they experience. Some dogs do. The secret is to pick a day when the groomer is not so very busy. Ask the groomer. Do not go to get your dog groomed the week of any holiday. Go at least two full weeks before the holiday. Keep your dog brushed out. NEVER demand your pet in two hours when it is clear the groomer has a full plate. Ask if it is a possibility. If the groomer says I cannot...believe him/her. NEVER go over their head with your demand as the manager will give them no choice: do what the customer wants or you are fired. Such pressure can easily lead to fatal errors in judgement. Grooming salon deaths are usually due to overworked groomers who forget. Lastly think of your dog. Make your appointment well in advance. Keep your pet brushed. Do not ask the impossible of your groomer. We are humans too. If your dog

FergieAM I'm sorry but it serves you right! How dare you leave your pet tied up out of site for that long! Your lucky someone who steals animals and sells them to labs didn't get it. You have no right to be mad at someone who obviously cared more about the dogs well being than it's owner.I have lived in old town and used to walk my dog there all the time even went to Holiday inn courtyard a lot. I would NEVER think of leaving my dog tied up out of site in the general public. You send that shop owner a thank you letter!!!

As for the original poster and his dogs attached at the hip: You should try crate training it so it is used to seperation otherwise this could become a big problem down the road. I know some people say "IT JUST LOVES YOU" well if you love your dog you should teach it to be by itself in a safe "den" enviroment. I love my new puppy (JRT) and she is only 10 weeks old, but has learned this already by crate training. Don't put your dog in the crate longer than 2 hours at a time though. Be sure to leave the door open when it's not in the crate so it gets used to the idea that it can go there anytime. Don't make it a jail. Don't get annoyed by the dogs need to be near it's master, but also you have to show who the alpha is. I see it all the time people with dogs in their laps driving, eating and the dog in their faces, as soon as you move the dog is fixed on you. This will teach them (while in closed crate) that life is ok even if your out of site.

I use Petsmart because of convenience. In fact, one of the groomers suggested I keep my toy poodle, Baruch (Spinoza), moustached. What a wonderful suggestion. Also, being old and alone, it's wonderful having a dog following me around all the time. being a tenant for the first time, it's wonderful he keeps me informed of all hallway activity. It's very quiet here, thank goodness, so I wouldn't be aware of anything since TV is on all the time. I also wanted him to take agility but found out I have to go back to basics. So I have to discipline myself. It's hard to do because he's so much fun to have around. However, it is making a huge difference to practice sitting and staying. I've let him have his way with me for too long. He's 4 YO now and I did have him professionally trained when I rescued him at the age of 1.

Just read the article about Takoma Park Police recruiting dog walkers. I think that's such a great idea for Homeland Security in general. I live near the PG/Mont. border and two police districts. They could both get together on this one since there are two Councilmen involved. Ironic, isn't it, we talk about the borders in Israel and Iraq/Iran and South of the USA and we have our own to think about right inside the USA, even with using police and pet walking;)
