PAGO PAGO, American Samoa - American Samoa's delegate to the U.S. Congress is calling for an investigation into the death of a baby at Honolulu International Airport.

Delegate Eni Faleomavaega has asked the Department of Homeland Security to begin an investigation into death of 14-day-old Michael Tony Futi last Friday.

The baby had been flown to Honolulu for emergency heart surgery. He died while detained inside a customs' room at the Honolulu airport with his mother and a nurse.

A lawyer for the family announced plans to sue the federal government over the baby's death.

Faleomavaega called for the probe in a letter issued to Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff.

luvmybroom, did anyone say why the baby was being detained in the customs room, or was it staffed by the usual low-rent morons?

Beagle, you said a mouthful and then some. This is the height of stupidity! In my many jobs, I worked at a hospital and once had to coordinate the medivac of a 6 week old baby, my youngest patient, from Bahrain to the UK for emergency heart surgery - not in an air ambulance but on a commercial British Airways flight .. you have no idea what a lot of work went into that air lift and how many people were involved .... yet it went really smooth with no hiccups ...

Obviously those idiots on the ground had no F'ing clue what was going on and thought they were doing the country a favor by detaining a sick infant. If they wanted to detain anyone they could have detained the nurse and the mom and let the ambulance transport the kid. Now they can sit back and be proud of their achievement! Bastard+, I hope all concerned will rot in hell!

Starrman, I have no idea why the kid was detained ... but its tragic. I wouldnt want to walk in those parents shoes right now ....

…you almost said a mouth full your self "Broom" except I didn't understand that "f'ing" thing ...noooot! ...as I sit here it overwhelms me again, what the hell were they imagining they were accomplishing and the appropriate approach to take in accomplishing that task??? ...the superior in this operation is the butt I'd want to have!!! ...

I worked for 20+ years at the peds hospital where that baby's surgery was going to be done. We would typically get perhaps 6-8 South Pacific transport cases like that every year. We have a state of the art neonatal/peds transport ambulance and team.

It's nothing short of incredible to me that the customs officials didn't simply hand this baby off to our transport team. Something went very, very wrong in that room and it ought to cost somebody their job, if not criminal negligence charges.
