The rights of all Americans can be secured only through the establishment of fair processes and with a consciousness that all are equal in the eyes of the law. Yet on many campuses, the unfortunate accused face "kangaroo courts" without fair procedures, in which the political viewpoint of the "judges" greatly affect the outcome of trials. The accused are often charged with no specific offense, given no right to face their accusers, and sentenced with no regard for fairness or consistency

This incident took place December 4, 2007 inside of Johnson C Smith University’s bookstore. Another student and I were trying to sell back our books that we had purchased earlier during the semester. After selling my books I was confronted by Officer B. Thompson who tried to make me exit through the back door of the premises of the bookstore before I had finished my shopping. Before me and Officer Thompson got into the altercation he told the gentleman that was behind the counter at the bookstore “ I am ready for them today” ( referring to the students). I was trying to explain to him that I wanted to purchase something in the front of the store but yet he continued to use excessive force to ensure my departure from the bookstore. After attempting a second time to modulate to the front of the store he used his body force to slam me against the book shelf and pull my hair out in his hand. I still have the piece of hair he removed along with pictures. The officer who used the force doesn’t have the power of arrest on our campus meaning he is just a security guard. An unjust law is no law at all. By the staff here at my school my story about what happened with Officer Thompson and I was pushed to the side. Instead of repremanding Officer Thompson they suspended me for the rest of the 2008 spring semester. There are cameras inside of the bookstore but they dont work so I have no other evidence besides my wittness who was present during the entire incident Brandy Brown. Officer Thompson was not even present during the judicial hearing instead he had another officer stand in his place. If I indeed was disgruntle in the bookstore why wouldn’t Officer Thompson be present at the hearing.  Since he is a authority figure they automatically took his side. I want to further my education and I feel that it has been stifled by administrators here at Smith. I am innocent of any charges that was brought against me by Officer Thompson and because of the preconceived stereotypes that float around campus about students from D.C. he automatically assumed on his own that I was going to pose a threat it was nothing I did. I am pleading for your help. For me to be a women who weighs 132 compared to a grown man who is no less than 220lbs Officer Thompson was out of line in every way possible. I have just been expelled from school and I don’t want to give up on my education without a fight. I am very hardworking and all of my teachers can attest to that. I plan on doing big things for my black community once a graduate but my education is being hindered. Its only God and me in my corner I am fighting this battle alone and I don’t know where else to turn.  Since this incident I have to take muscle relievers which was prescribed by my doctor because of the blunt force trauma that occurred when Officer Thompson swung my head into the bookshelf and wrestled me to the ground.

I don't get it. Why wouldn't they let you finish shopping? Are they having too many problems with students helping themselves to books after transactions at the checkout counter? I guess they feel more comfortable with everyone finding purchases before the checkout rather than after.... Still, the excessive force was ridiculous! I also don't understand why you were expelled. Sounds like you are leaving out some info that would have been helpful for us to advise you properly. I hope you get things straightened out so you can finish school! Sounds like you have a great purpose for the future. This ordeal remonds me our HOA at home. The Security and the kangaroo comments are all too familiar to us here as well.
Wish you luck.......

I'm confused by this sentence of yours:

"After purchasing my books I was confronted by Officer B. Thompson who tried to make me exit through the back door of the premises of the bookstore before I had finished my shopping."

It's contradictory. You begin the sentence by saying that you had purchased your books, then you end the sentence by saying you had not finished your shopping.

Listen Bamma, your story is so riddled with inconsistencies it's laughable. This is why your proud black bretheren get convicted of murder so easily. If the bloggers on this site can see the holes in your story, imagine being interrogated by the real police. You stole some books, and the books you were trying to sell back were also stolen. Also, a security guard in a book store who beat you down is not a cop. Therefore the title of your blog- "Police Brutality" is inaccurate.

I want to explain something to everyone. first of all i did not still any books from the bookstore. at universities school's have a buy book books day were u can sell back the books you brought earlier in the semester. After i sold back my books the security guard said go out the back door i told him no because i wantded to purchase something from the front of the book store and i will just leave out of the front exit. i tried to walk past him and he pushed me back saying "were are you going" i told him to the front of the book store to buy a soda i tried to walk past him for the second time and he pushed me back and grabbed my dreads and swung me into the bookshelf and and wrestled me to the ground. The person is only a security guard and he doesnt have the power of arrest on our campus i wasnt biligerent i wasnt cursing him out he just felt threatened by me i guess because i told him that i wasnt going out of the side of the door. I even have a wittness and she saw the whole thing and couldnt understand herself why the security guard did what he did. I told the school that i was going to file a lawsuit so that made them mad so i guess having me out of the school would be in their best intrest. Even staff at my school couldnt understand why the school suspended me. Since this incident the school Vice President of Student Affairs he made the final decision to suspend has resigned. I just want to go back to school thats all

keepdcblack, why didn't you just exit the store and re-enter? I know it sounds like a waste of time, but if you look back, those two or three minutes you would have wasted exiting and re-entering, would have saved you all this anguish now.

I remember from my college days buying books at the start of the semester and it was a madhouse---people trying to find books, people trying to purchase books, people just wandering around looking at books, etc.! If your college bookstore had a policy of one entrance/one exit that day, it was to make things more organized and run more smoothly.

I don't see why you just didn't exit and re-enter the bookstore.

priveye if you hate black people why are you responding to my blog. I dont need you degrading me i am just looking for help for my situation. my school is very very small the school bookstore is small as well. it is to small for people to wander around looking for stuff people were just in the store to sell back there books and be on their way. if i was to leave the store and try to re enter that would have meant staying in the long line for an addittional hour or more. I had class why couldnt i have just bought my soda and left through the front entrance where the soda was located i dont understand. The security guard had no right to put his hands on me. the situation was not that serious. the sad thing is my school is giving these security officers to do what ever to students by suspending me for something that was clearly not my fault.
Even another campus officer said that he would have just let me get the soda

That is why you couldn't have just bought your soda and left through the front entrance---your bookstore is too small to wander about in. And if there was an hour wait in the line just to get in that day, I can only imagine how crowded and restless (yes, restless because everyone is in a rush and anxious to get their books, etc.) it was. And by having one entrance and one exit they were trying to make it more orderly for you and your fellow students.

One of the things you have to learn when you become an adult is there are some things that are worth making a big issue of and some things that aren't. I went to a small college and we had breakrooms with soda/snack machines. If I wasn't allowed to purchase a soda at the bookstore for whatever reason, I would have headed to a breakroom.

Always think before you act. That's the best advice I can give to you.

That is true. Two minutes that i spent arguing with the security guard about letting me pass caused me my education for the semeseter. although the security guard was wrong for swinging me head into the bookshelf and wrestling me to the ground it all could have been avoided if i would have just said BLEEP it and left. I let my pride override me making a smart decision. I can tell you one thing its a learning experience and I will think twice before i let my pride take over. It just hurts that my school basically said it was ok for the security guard to put his hands on me. but God knows the truth and in due time my school will have to pay for their mistake. I just have to take this experience as a lesson and learn from it.
Thanks for the advice

DCBlackie, what’s a “duchbag”? Is that a term of art in soufeast? I noticed you got tired of DCBlackie and changed to “lluvmyblackpeople”. (What happened? Can’t stand that heat?) Well, you’ll find Priveye and I are very adaptable so henceforth we’ll refer to you as “iluvmyblackies.” You can’t criticize us for not being accommodating.
