There was a "discussion item", today, at the WMATA board meeting:  coping with the predicted over-capacity crunch coming in either 2020 or 2030 (depending on how many rail cars are purchased).

Even if every single rush hour train is an eight-car train, by 2030, some riders will not be able to board the first train into the station.

One of the solutions:  build a NEW LINE from Rosslyn, Va. thru Georgetown into downtown D.C. (mostly along M Street).  The new line would have a separate crossing under or over the Potomac River.  It would draw passengers off the lines in the congested central core of the city.

Minimum cost:  200 (m) million dollars a mile!  Several board members all but said, "This ain't happening."  A far less costly alternative that was also discussed:  converting some lanes on roadways to dedicated bus lanes.

The theory is:  get buses rolling faster than traffic, and more people will leave their cars at home.

I'm not a big Metro rider, that said.
It seems to me if there is an increase of riders there would be an increase of revenue. So as the increase of riders happens buy a few more trains and so on. That would extend reaching capacity many more years correct?
Instead of running trains every 10 minutes you run them 5 minutes apart.
I road the metro the other day and when I was in the underground stations I looked around. They look like they have been unmanaged for 40 years! dirt everywhere, half done repairs elevators out and no one working on them. What are they doing with the money right now?
they don't need another additional line. They need to get the monkeys out of the chairman seats!

I think that the way Metro treats their passengers they may NEVER reach capacity. I used to go from Springfield/Franconia to Crystal City, and later to Elephant Plaza. I saw metro train drivers waiting too long to open the doors, and closing them before all the folks were even OFF the trains, much less anyone boarding. The AC never worked in the spring, and they never finished any stretch of track so speeds could resume, so you had to plan for an ADDITIONAL 15 -20 minutes travel. They never addressed the school aged brats eating, cussing, sleeping, taking up seats and harassing other riders. They never even got th e volume of the speakers standardized, so one time you couldn't hear the announcements, other times it was so loud you couldn't stand it. The current management is absolutely incapable of running the system. They prove it every day.
