As most of us know, the federal government has expressed great skepticism about helping fund an extension of Metro to Dulles Airport.

I thought the project was dead.  Two things from today.  An off-the-record conversation with a knowledgeable source (which I cannot even report here) has led to a five dollar bet.  I bet against the project getting federal money.  My source bet in favor.

Very late this afternoon, the U.S. Sec. of Transportation released a short statement promising to consider the needs of regional drivers in the forthcoming decision.  Hmmm.

My prediction:  the feds will cough up some money, but it will be far less than the 900 million being requested by Virginia.  Look for a decision by the end of the month.

I'll go with your prediction, and side with your source.

I can't help but belive that the Bush administration is playing politics again and denying Sen Warner and his constituents a viable and much needed transportation project.

Sen Warner was a vocal opponent of the administrations troop policy in Iraq (top Rebublician on the Armed services committee)if you remember last year. As with Ambassador Joe Wilson (and his wife outted CIA agent Valery Plame) you pay a high price if you don't tow the administration's line.

This project would be a crowning achievement to a long carieer for Sen. Warner and would benefit the people of Northern Virginia.

My money is on the private equity company The Carlyle Group. This project fits thier profile. It is potientialy a very profitable venture and lets face it the presidents father is a member of this group, as are alot of ex-elected officals. Legislating your inheritance not a bad gig.

"pinky" ...it's a boondoggle thing ...if it's so vital then Virginians can put their shoulder to the wheel and pay for it ...I'm tired of hearin' about this dam project...

John...I live in Great Falls, which is just about 4 minutes on a good traffic day from Tysons Corner. If this is the topic of your conversation, you should know that residents who live at Tysons do NOT want an above ground system and are at a point where they would prefer NOTHING. It amazes me that when the residents of the already highly congested area stood their ground in requesting that the system be underground...the politicians had a tantrum and decided to put some sort of tram above ground. It certainly seems to me that there must have been a major pay off in the making for "somebody"...but they didn't have underground construction expertise. I suppose the paltry 900M that you speak of will cover a part and the rest will show up on a ballot at election time asking voters to vote for a major loan or bond sale to cover the rest. I do have a question...why did most of the major car dealers sell out of Tysons and leave in anticipation of the above ground rail? They are now all out in Chantilly Auto Park which is waaaaaaaaaaaaay the heck out. To date, HBL is one that seems to be staying, with Moore Cadillac leaving a couple of months ago. What gives with all the moves?

John...just a few days ago I looped up thru Tysons on my way home due to the construction on Beulah in Vienna. One of the service lanes was closed at Gosnell and 7. My son indicated it was closed for "bed" testing prior to beginning constructing the ABOVE GROUND rail system to go through Tysons. He indicated that the current service roads will become part of Route 7 in order to make room for width of median for the rail and 2 stations. WHAT a MESS that will be.
