I'm laying in bed right now watching the story about how the Red Cross and other organizations are crying out for blood donations. It really irritates me....and I have absolutely no sympathy.

Why, you may ask? Because of a stupid rule that anyone who lived in Western Europe for at least six months after 1990 can't give blood. I used to be a regular blood donor until then, and then the mad cow hysteria happened. Instead of taking intelligent steps, they just do a blanket ban.

Crying for blood donations? Too freaking bad, Red Cross, you shot yourselves in the foot. Especially in the DC area, where there is a metric crapload of Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen. Six or seven of every ten active duty soldiers you meet in the DC area will have been to Europe at least once......

I'm not suffering from BSE. If you aren't going to let me give blood, then I don't want to hear your pleas for blood. STFU!

I was thinking about the same thing ... I am also excluded from donating blood ... I donated once until BSE hit the fan ... so because I lived in Europe from 1990/1993, I've been excluded. I am also in that group that is always asked to donate (B+ve) ... so I share in your sentiments ...

One thing that bothered me though, I'm also on the National Bone Marrow donors list too, but no one has told me I cant donate bone marrow if the need arises. I have to constantly update my info with the NBM Institute ... wonder if I'll be excluded ... no one has told me anything different yet !

That's a very good question, luvmybroom. I'm also on the NBM donors list...I guess we'll just have to see what happens when the need arises.

I quit giving blood for several years because I resented getting asked all the dumba** hetero and homosexual questions they asked. There was even the question about, 'Have you had unprotected sex since 1978?'. What a stupid question. Let's see, I'm a man and I'm married. Wouldn't you be worried about the person who answered that question 'No'?

The Red Cross use to be a good organization about 30 to 40 years ago!! Then they became money hoarding devils who waits for disasters to happen so they can get billions of donations and only distribute millions. They have become an evil organization!!

Unfortunately, they have to ask those questions to make sure you are a good candidate. can you imagine how much money they would have to spend if they didn't ask those screening questions and how much blood would be discarded?

And as for CJD there is no human screening test they can do on blood to make sure you don't have it. Just because you don't have the signs and symptoms of it now, doesn't mean it's not lurking/hiding in your body waiting or that you are a carrier.

The last time I lived in Germany was 1997 and early 1998. It's 2007 now, almost 10 years later. Frankly, I'm not interested in excuses. If I can't give blood, I'm not interested in listening to pleas for blood.
