I have been riding motorcycles for most of life, first in the dirt and then street. Over the last several yrs. I've noticed a tendency for cars to become more aggressive towards bikers.I myself have been deliberately forced off the road 4 times, this does not take into consideration's near misses tail gating and other life threatening incidents that seem to be on the rise! What is it that makes people think they don't have to acknowledge motorcycles and give them the same courtesy and adherence to the laws of the road as autos? They do it's the law!Don't people realize that a collision between a bike and auto is always one sided and lethal in a lot of instances for the biker?I know a lot of people see bikers (sport or cruiser) as reckless and irresponsible. Who's more  irresponsible?  A guy on 600 pound bike getting away from traffic to ride safely,or someone who feels the need to show they own the road in their 5000 pound vehicle that can cause instant death to someone just to prove a point! Throwing a missle at a biker is a felony, deliberately  forcing one off the road is attempted murder! So the next time you anti motorcyclist feel the need to play traffic cop remember it's not a game out there on the road. One other thing while your out there dispensing your interpretation of justice to what you perceive as someone unworthy of use of the highways,be careful you might be on the receiving end of some justice and this is not a threat! Hell have no furry like a biker intentionally scorned! Just give them a brake and stay away, most of the time they just want to be left alone!

jadeddude, I'm nervous around motorcyclists. Primarily because a guy I knew in college lost is leg in a motorcycling accident. So whenever I see a motorcyclist, I let them pass me, and I avoid driving near them.

But that doesn't always work, because I've had motorcyclists swerve in front of me. For example, there's a red light ahead and I'm slowing down. Motorcyclist cuts in front of me. I've had motorcyclists cut in front of me when I'm on a decelerating onto an off ramp.

You might not be an irresponsible cyclist and I might not be an irresponsible driver, but we aren't the only people on the roads, unfortunately. :(

jaddedude, I tend to agree with caffeinated-cow on this. I know the majority of motorcycle riders are good drivers, there is that portion that are simply AH's and weave in and out, pass on the shoulder, in blind spots, etc. And then get pizzed because they may have been inadvertently, or even sometimes on purpose cut off. Having been the owner and rider of many motorcycles in years gone by, I do know what you mean when you say, "a tendency for cars to become more aggressive towards bikers". Those type of driver's are usually in that me, me, me, group of people that are better than everyone else on the road, and the rules and laws don't apply to them, or so it would seem. I found that while riding I had to keep an eye out in every direction just to make sure I would arrive home safe. That was way back in the 60s, and I cannot even imagine how much worse it is now.

My whole point is that the car will win every situation that comes up so just ignore them.I've had two friends killed and two who have lost legs over the yrs. Aggressive or reckless driving is always dangerous and should not be tolerated just seems lately its guilt by association.

I agree what a car will win all the time. Which makes me wonder why motorcyclists would risk their lives by driving recklessly themselves. Like I said, I've been cut off on off ramps or while approaching a red light. And it scares the bejeebers out of me because I know if I don't brake fast enough, my car "tapping" the motorcycle will cause the cycle and perhaps the driver to go air-born for a few hundred feet.

That's why I'm VERY careful around motorcyclists when I'm in my car. I don't like them driving in front of beside me. Granted there are responsible motorcyclists, but it's the reckless ones I worry about the most, because they take risks that can have VERY bad endings....:(

my next door neighbor's sister just died last month in a motorcycle accident. It wasn't her fault, she got cut off by a pick up truck pulling a trailer and as they changed lanes and they clipped her. She was at Myrtle Beach, SC with her boyfriend. I don't think the driver even stopped, probably not realizing what he had done. It's too easy to make a mistake like this, a deadly one at that.

I love a guy on a motorcycle, I prefer to follow or ride with them in my vehicle. They are so much more aware of whats going on around them because they have to be!

EXCEPT for the idiots who insist on squeezing between me and another vehicle along the dotted line going 80+ the pull a wheely at that speed! UGH

I applaud you for your ability to speak up for bikers, its wonderful and someone has to stand up for the non suicidal bikers.

On the other hand for the idiots that hot rod, remember unfortunately a car will always win, oh and wear the damn helmet.

I'm well aware of the things that you're saying in this thread. Last summer, I was on the receiving end of one of those aggressive driver's acts of aggression. I got hit from behind while riding my sportbike in Northern VA. The driver of the vehicle didn't bother to stop to see if I was still alive after I flew off my bike, flipped, bounced, rolled and slid down the pavement for a few hundred yards. Of course, now, I'm very sensitive when folks in cars or trucks follow behind me too closely. I have yet to understand why so many kids in their "rice burners" feel the need to follow so close. I realize that they do this whether I'm in a car or on a bike. ...but like you said, it's far more dangerous for me when I'm on the bike.

I'm not saying that it's right but that's why I try to stay way ahead of the traffic or why I drop back as far behind the traffic as possible. Every now and then, I'll just pull away really fast just to get away from the traffic. I'd rather stay alive and have you think of me as an idiot than to give you the opportunity to hit me from behind or cut me off and prove your position on motorcycles being dangerous.

side issue: what is the purpose of installing that huge coffee can sized muffler on a little four-cylinder car besides making the vehicle obnoxiously loud? Some say that they get a few more horsepower but is that extra two horsepower worth all that noise?

jadeddude, did someone hijack your profile and username?

If not, I don't understand what is meant by "stay to the right. It's the law". Also, what is "you'll never deal with a biker again" supposed to mean?

I was talking about the cars.No one who rides a bike wants to be around a car truck ect.for the very reason you described!Cars don't obey any highway laws they stay in the in the passing lane all the time.Sorry to hear about your accident!I know people who have died!

Yes jaded dude, stay to the right. It kills me driving around here and seeing how many people just cruise in the left or passing lane! Slower traffic keep right for goodness sake.
And give those bikers room!
