Well.. that's debateable... so.. let's debate...

Sure he owns just about every passing record known to man.. both good AND bad... he has the coveted ring (sorry Dan Marino fans) and that does go a long way in my way of thinking... so.. without further adieu... who ya got in your all-time best QB's???

ONLY CRITERIA FOR MY DEBATE: you must have seen them play.. (not in person mind you, but at least on TV... so, for me, I can't put in a Johnny Unitas or a Slingin' Sammy Baugh... you're picking up what I'm putting down..) and yes, you CAN INCLUDE current QB's if you think they're good enough to be in there, without playing another down.. so... here's mine...

5) Troy Aikman. 3 titles. Precision accuracy. Never blinked in the clutch. Had a rocket of an arm, great decision making, and cool under fire. A bit Montana, and a bit Brady. But since his supporting cast was so good, he gets passed aside alot in these debates. But there's no denying his numbers, second only to Montana in the playoffs, although Brady's were better until his loss this year. (3-0 in Super Bowls in still better than 3-1).

4) Roger Staubach. Okay, I'm biased here. But the guy is sooooo underrated in the history of the greats it's maddening. 2 Super Bowl trophies, and he only played 10 years in the league because of:   a) the Navy (4 years he gave, which he probably would have/could have won another ring in his prime) and:    b) his family. He left the game when he still had plenty left. Roger the Doger gave me thrills as a kid; the man was Fran Tarkenton with a much better arm, and a predecessor to John Elway.

3) Tom Brady. Yep. right now, I gotta put him in there. Reminds me so much of Montana it's scary. 3 rings, and if had a 4th already; I would have put him even higher. Think of his receivers and running backs he actually WON the Super Bowl with: Troy Brown, Deion Branch, David Patten, David Givens, Corey Dillon, Kevin Faulk, Antwoine Smith etc.. etc.. none of these guys did anything before or after their time with Brady (except for Dillon, who had some really good years in Cincy). And although he has a loss and Aikman doesn't as previously noted, Brady did more with less to get his 3 rings.

2) Joe Montana. As much as it pains me to say, 4 rings are 4 rings (sorry Terry Bradshaw, but your defenses were much better than Montana's en route to your 4 rings.) He's cool Joe for a reason... just always in control. Maybe the ultimate quarterback leader, and that cannot be under valued.

1) John Elway . Yep, if I had one QB for one game to win, this is my guy. He's got 2 rings, took 3 other very average Bronco teams to a Super Bowl... with some of the worst defenses you'll ever see in a title game.  5 appearances in all, but more than that; he's my ultimate do-it-all QB. Can run for the yards necessary, and make any throw from anywhere on the field. And to win those titles back-to-back and then retire, can anyone have gone out better? The answer is no.

Fire away people. There are no wrong answers. Well, sure, we all know that's not true, but I look forward to hearing your lists!

Ok Dave, you're a funny guy and you make me laugh at times but your top 5 list is a joke taken to another level. Did you write that or was it freestyle? I was born in the summer of 72 and I'm 35. Here is my top 5 QB's of all time from what I've seen...

1. Joe Montana
2. John Elway
3. Tom Brady
4. Peyton Manning
5. Brett Favre

When thinking of my top 5, I ranked them solely on who would scare the hell outta me with 2 minutes left in a game and they had to go 80 yards against my team.

I am a die-hard Skins fan but a big Tom Brady fan. I would've made that dude number 1 overall if he had pulled that victory out against the NY Giants in the Super Bowl. Even still, he will eventually be the best quarterback to play the game, hands down. Especially since he'll be throwing to Randy a few more years.

Sincerely,

KoKo Bagginz

Wait a sec... you say my list is a joke, but yet you and I have the same exact top 3!!!! Come on man.. and i said the same thing about Brady... would have him 1 or 2 if he had that coveted 4th ring!!!! you gotta indulge me a bit on my staubach and aikman picks... i may see your peyton pick, but he's gotta win more than one to get in that top 5.. and same for brett!! in the end, the top 3, we just differ in the order.. flip montana and elway, and we're lookin' eye to eye... like ben stiller and robert deniro in "meet the parents"!!!

hahahaha. Fair enough Dave. I guess it just kills me that my Sports guy, who I depend on for late breaking information regarding my Skinz is forcing two Dallas QB's down my throat. Come on, I'm not the biggest Peyton fan but you still gotta respect that dude being in my top 5.

Still, it's an honor to rap to ya.
I love to hear you say...but I digress

Alright, good point.. I'll tell you what.. IF Peyton wins one more, (he should have already had 2 by now...) then I'll put him in here, and take away Aikman... but I really do believe Roger was vastly underrated... so I gotta leave him in there until someone better comes along...

So, we're almost 4 outta 5.. sounds like a dentists' recommendation! but i... well you know the rest! ha

Dave! I can't believe that Terry Bradshaw didnt make your lists. I think that you are right on with Troy and Roger even though i'm a Redskin fan. I'll reserve on Brady lets see what he can do when he is under pressure OOHH I forgot the Giants are the World Champs. Keep up the good work I enjoy your reports.

Yo Dave,

Your list is right on man ! ( kokobagginz is a die hard skins fan who suffers from a term I came up with and will try to get in the medical dictionary and in all medical schools terminologies... DRFT Syndrome or Delusional Redskin Fan Thinking Syndrome lol. BUT, I digress.......at least he didn't attempt to put a Redskin QB on that list....kudo's to you koko ! )

Having two Cowboys on this list is fitting ( although I have to say, Aikman threw his share of INT'S, but what the hey, this is Washington DC lol ).

Brett Favre should be #5a on your list in my opinion.

Cowboysfan,

Hahaha. Great post. You almost got me fired laughing so hard at your lil two cents. I woke my supervisor up laughing so hard. Anyway, just to let you, Dave and everyone know I suffer from DRFT Syndrome with pride.

What I wanna know is how much money you had to pay our Dave Ross to put those two Dallas QB's on his list? Clearly, that is an envelope post. I think you should look at my list again.

Hojo5, the Bradshaw recommendation was also funny. Everybody knows TB has Swann and Stallworth to thank for his rings and HOF membership. Good one.

Yeah, Bradshaw is certainly in the discussion, but boy did he have some unreal defenses (that Steel Curtain kept Roger from having a few more rings) and that offense... hall of famer after hall of fame... stallworth, swann, franco... that's alot of firepower on both sides of the ball... i do appreciate the skins fans on here givin' some love to the guys with the stars on their helmets... and I always accept cold hard cash on lists.. no checks please! ha!

Dave,

You can't put Bradshaw in the discussion of Top 5 QB's of All Time, unless he's playing "Analyst TB" for NFL On Fox. I mean I started watching football around 77-78 and from what I remember of Bradshaw, I saw a lot of throw the ball up and let my two fantastic All-Pro receivers bail me out by making acrobatic catches that only they could make being immortal and all.

As for the Skins fans showing love to the guys with the stars, I gotta question the loyalty of any "burgundy and gold" fan who would endorse your list. Don't get me wrong, I respect your list(probably because its almost like mine, so I know you're capable)but putting Aikman on that list especially is a no,no. That dude didn't put up earth shattering stats year after year like the QB's on mine. Trust me I know. I play fantasy football. He was accurate yes but thats where it stops.

Dallas had a balanced attack that would make you pay, if safeties cheated toward the line of scrimmage to try to focus solely on Emmitt.

Talk to me Dave, its KoKo here. I'm trying to reason with you. If you keep this up, I'll have no choice but to try Jedi Mind trickz. hahaha

KOKO,

Aikman might not have put up earth shattering stats, but he does have 3 rings ! Glad you got a laugh out of my post lol.

Yeah, that post was a trip.

Point taken Cowboysfan. He does have the rings to back Dave's claim. However, is this about rings or individual stats? Would you put Aikman over Montana, Elway, Brady, Manning or Favre? Aikman really didn't have to throw as much as Marino because he had an outstanding ground game. Elway didn't actually win a Super Bowl until he got a ground game. When Favre won, he had Dorsey Levens to feed the ball to. Tom Brady is pretty much the only quarterback I know who didn't really have a running game before Corey Dillon came, and yet still won. I guess dump-offs to Kevin Faulk equal handoffs to your running back.

My point is you can't base your opinion on Super Bowl rings. It's misleading. Don't forget Trent Dilfer has a ring. Mark Rypien has a ring. Brad Johnson has a ring. Marino does not. Dan Fouts does not. Archie Manning does not.

Point taken KOKO,

I was listening to Mike and Mike in the Morning on ESPN, Greeny was asking Golic what QB's he would take in a game. When he came to Aikman or Favre, Golic could not make a decision on who he would take. He finally said, I have to go with Favre lol.

Yeah, Favre was an exciting gun-slinging QB who lived by his arm and died by his arm.

Like I was asking Dave earlier, which QB scares the hell outta yeah, when there's less than 2 minutes in a game and he has to take the team 80 yards for a touchdown. Not Aikman.

Good points people!!! And I do think you've gotta take into account rings, but koko is right, you can't solely base it on that... BUT in my book, that does go a long way.. soooo.. I still gotta take Aikman over Favre.. 3 rings to one... yes, Favre has the MVP's... and yes, he may have scared me more, but I think he scared his teammates too... high risk, high reward, but he's also thrown away many a game (ie: the Giants this year) than Aikman ever did... trivia guys: who's the only quarterback to win 2 Super Bowls and NOT be in the hall of fame???

hahahahaha.

Dave, you're a funny guy. Of course you would bring this up because the QB that happens to own this distinct honor accomplished this beating MY beloved "burgundy and gold" in the 1983 season. I was 11 years old and I remember crying because I thought the Redskins had the best team that year.

Answer: Jim Plunkett

I guess I'm feeling the need to digress a little now...

good one

Koko you've got mad skills!!! I stumped Feldy on that one last night... and he's a Stanford and California guy!!!! That Super Bowl... I'll always remember... for Theismann throwing the oick.. to Jack Squirek! I think the play was "Rocket screen" with a number attached to it.. right befor the end of the first half... you guys did have a better team, but like this year, the better team doesn't always win!

Agreed..and thanks for bringing this back up again. I'm still bugged about Marcus Allen being able to reverse an entire field on us and take it to the house. I'm sure I'll sleep well tonight.

Well, you gotta answer this one for me. Is Feldy a "Skinz fan" or is that considered CLASSIFIED information?

dave_ross read my blog view my photos
Mar 6, 2008 | 4:44 PM

Ah... Feldy is a "homer" these days.. while he grew up on the west coast (think as a Niners fan) he certainly now roots for all the local teams.. like I grew up with certain teams, but now I root openly for the wiz kids.. the caps, dc united... but football, well, is football.. and you just can't change allegiences... you know what I'm saying.. BUT I respect the players for what they do, and enjoy covering them... and say with a guy like Joe Gibbs... he simply personifies class... how can you not like and respect a man like that?

And.. I think Marucs is still weaving his way through all 11 guys... that might have been the most incredible super bowl td run ever... but I will say, your boy Timmy Smith against Denver... the most SURPRISING star in a Super Bowl... still think he and Doug should have split that MVP vote...

Hey Cowboysfan! BTW.. love the acronym.. very funny stuff... and it really is harder than we all think to pick a top 5.. but yeah, I've got no problem with Favre being 5a... nodding out say, a Dan Marino with 0 rings...sorry Danny boy.. had to have won one to break into that exclusive group!

Thanks Dave !

Next season, when Feldy goes into "homer" mode, please let him know that it is possible that he suffers from DRFT Syndrome lol. It's all in fun !

Hi everyone!! Dave Ross here, and I have been here, at WTTG, for a long, long time now. I came to DC in 1995, as a writer for our morning sportscasts, then I would field produce all of Tony Perkins' live shots. We had too much fun, and who knew years later Tony would return to Fox, and I'd still be here! Since then, I have moved on to become the Senior Sports Producer, and the host of Sports Breakfast. Working daily with the likes of Dave Feldman and Dave Benz always makes for a fun day at the office. I think it's fairly easy to see that I am a sports junkie, and I love a good debate. So needless to say, I will be sharing my opinion on the world of sports, and I look forward to hearing yours as well!
