The Humane Society of the United States is rescuing more than a thousand puppies from what they call a puppy mill in Carroll County in southern Virginia. No one's been arrested yet, but there are so many pregnant moms that 20 new puppies were born just this past weekend! The Humane Society says people should avoid buying puppies from stores and only buy from breeders if you've visited their site and met the puppy's parents. What do you think?

The miserable S.O.B.s who run puppy mills are no better than the guys who stage dog fights. Anyone who supports them by buying puppies from shopping mall pet stores is no better.

When I bought a dog from a responsible and humane kennel, I took the time to do my research, and I spent time getting references, etc. The funny thing is that I paid about the same as I would have for a poor, sick puppy from a worn out momma dog. If I can do my homework, so can other buyers.

Gee that's awefully funny coming from an anti-human organization that prides itself on it's successes towards shutting down all form of animal domestication, including breeding and even flat out ownership.

“[T]he Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is not affiliated with, nor is it a parent organization for, local humane societies, animal shelters, or animal care and control agencies … The HSUS does not operate or have direct control over any animal shelter.”
— From a 2001 disclaimer issued by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS)

“The life of an ant and that of my child should be granted equal consideration.”
— HSUS senior scholar Michael W. Fox

“The Humane Society should be worried about protecting animals from cruelty. It’s not doing that. The place is all about power and money.”
— HSUS consultant and former HSUS Chief Investigator Robert Baker, in U.S. News & World Report

“I’m not an admirer of HSUS. They’ve always been primarily a direct-mail operation, and what’s known in animal rights circles as a credit-grabber.”
— HSUS co-founder Cleveland Amory

“My goal is the abolition of all animal agriculture.”
— HSUS grassroots coordinator John “J.P.” Goodwin

Some more HSUS quotes:

“My goal is the abolition of all animal agriculture.”
— HSUS grassroots coordinator John “J.P.” Goodwin

“We’ve started picketing outside the homes of the [department store] executives … Those executives do not deserve a break. They do not deserve to go home and rest.”
— J.P. Goodwin describing his anti-fur strategy

“HSUS really needs to be called to task for its triple sided hypocrisy. When HSUS addresses scientists they say they support animal research as necessary. When HSUS addresses the public they say it is evil but sometimes necessary. When HSUS addresses its members and other animal rights groups, they say it is evil and unnecessary.”
— Dr. Pat Cleveland of the University of California, San Diego

Finally my fave HSUS quote regarding how much the "care" about domestic animals(a.k.a.:dogs and cats):

“We have no ethical obligation to preserve the different breeds of livestock produced through selective breeding ...One generation and out. We have no problems with the extinction of domestic animals. They are creations of human selective breeding.”
— Animal People News

Once again Fox News glorifies these hypocrits with the hidden agenda. Why don't you do the community a real favor and keep track of these dogs and where they wind up.My money says they wind up in the PETA shelter and wind up dead just like 90%(compared to around 25% for other non-PETA shelters)of all animals handed over to them.PETA and the HSUS love killing animals if it means that humans can't own them.

GrandmaM;
I think you are wrong on this one!
I bought a new puppy last week to replace the two we had for 15 years. This puppy was well cared for and always will be!

Grandad1, my people are from MO, home of many puppy mills. A lady in my Mom's home town runs one. She breeds her females over and over and over until she wears them out. Her dogs are treated like livestock, live in miserable little shacks, and are bred without regard to ancestry, health history, etc. She will ship a puppy anywhere to anyone with money at 6-8 weeks. I've seen the farm. I know the lady who cleans the runs and feeds the dogs, and she gets in serious trouble if she plays with or pets the dogs. She needs her wages badly, so she minds her p's and q's.

I apologise for calling names. I know enough about you that I'm sure you will care for your new puppy and love it. All I'm saying is, do you know how its mother was treated? Do you know if anyone ever patted her on the head or gave her any kind of a life? Do you know if your puppy's ancestors had bad hips, bad knees, epilepsy, genetic blindness, even bad temperments?

You can buy a dog from a reputable kennel, meet the dog's dam and sire, get an honest pedigree and a list of clearances that the parents have had. It doesn't mean that your dog will be equally clear, but you have a better chance of getting a sound dog.

I agree with Mountaineer fan about the HSUS and PETA but what about the puppy farmer who was just exposed? Is that person blameless? Who else would step in and help the dogs? Obviously VA's Ag Dept. isn't doing it's job or the number of dogs wouldn't have climbed to 1000 when the operator had a permit for 500.

I am sorry to have offended any pet owners. But I beg anyone looking for a new pupp

I am glad they are trying to put puppy mills out of business ... I bought my Pug from a reputable breeder, met dame and sire and got his papers and registered him with the AKC. He came from a long line of AKC registered Pugs and a long line of Champs. It breaks my heart when I go into these pet shops and see the conditions these dogs are living in. So I stopped going into them a long time ago.

I dont have a lot of sympathy for human beings and the stupid situations they get into, some much deservng than others ... but I get distraught at situations such as this ...
Shut 'em all down!

I wonder how this stupid woman would feel if she was bred over and over again like she did her Bithce=!

If people would stop purchasing puppies from the pet stores, a lot of the puppy mills wouldn't exist anymore. I know its easier to just walk into the pet store then opposed to driving miles to get a puppy, but its worth the time and effort to do so because the puppies you are buying in the pet store, have most likely come from places that the animals are not well cared for. Do your homework and check out the places you are buying from first. When I went to a pet store in Dale City and asked them where they got their puppies, they refused to give me a definite place of origin. This told me one thing, their puppies are coming from the same places we see to often on tv. Although I have two Pugs, I would not buy one from a pet store. My first Pug came from a breeder two hours south of where I live. It was a long drive, but he was worth it. My two now, adopted from a lady who couldn't keep them anymore due to family issues. But that being said, my future pets will be coming from either a rescue or a kennel because so many unwanted pets end up here. Puppy mills are simply puppies for profit with no regards to the health or welfare of either the adult dogs or the puppies being born. When the females can no longer produce, they are usually taken to a shelter, killed by the owner or left to die in humanely. Heartless humans own puppy mills. Don't be a contributor their heartlessness by buying the puppies they mass produce.

The only real problem with the HSUS is that a lot of them are against hunting.

Born, there are a lot of problems with the HSUS and their stance on hunting is just one of them. They are just like PETA in that their whole modus is just a ruse.As apposed to many, often underfunded, animal welfare organizations like The American Humane Society these people exist only to make money and use animals as a venue for their anti-human agenda.
While many shelters run by the AHS are border bankrupt these con artists and known terrorists have duped the public into thinking that they actually participate in animal welfare operation such as shelters and medical care. However, the only thing these people do is pander for more money. They in fact spend almost half of their yearly income just asking for more money as apposed to actually helping animals. That money is no small amount either with a net worth around 150,000,000 dollars.Yet these people are constantly whining about how "desperate" they are.

GrandmaM said "Who else would step in and help the dogs?"

GrandmaM there are always other besides organizations like the HSUS to turn to.For instance the American Humane Society I mentioned earlier or the ASPCA.Anyone can secretly video something and raise a stink about it.

Mountain, I think your missing the point here. I could care less who rescues these poor helpless animals from their inhumane living conditions and treatment. I'm just glad someone or some organization stepped in to help those who can't help themselves. Thats something to cheer about, don't you agree?

Mountaineer, I hear you. However, despite your disdain for the HSUS, a dislike shared by many pet owners, do you have any feelings about the situation the dogs were in? Would you feel better about someone helping them if it had been the ASPCA? Or should everyone have turned away and left the dogs as is?

Yes,Grandma I would have felt better if it were the ASPCA or just about anyone else.At least I would know they did it out of concern for the animals and not just for another victory to add to their fund drive commercials.

My whole arguement here has been about Fox News once again making the HSUS out to be some sort of heros that they really aren't.

As far as the situation itself you should know well enough by now that I don't approve of it one bit.If you can't care for animals properly then you just shouldn't have them, period!Just so you'll know the last two dogs we have had were rescued from just such a breeder. This fellow wasn't all that bad but he just didn't have the means to take care of his dogs properly and some were in very poor health including ours.
One of the dogs we took was suffering badly from cancer and was in need of very hi-dollar meds which we aquired. The other suffered from mange.Remember that mangey bear pic a few days ago? That bear looked like a wooly yak compared to our dog when we got him.The inexpensive dip they were using was killing him because it's rather poisonous. There was a newer and more effective, and also hi-dollar,oral med available but the breeder couldn't afford it.We stepped in and now he's been a rather hairy beast for a long time now.

Cont:

No-one should ever get the impression that I don't care about the dogs.in fact quite the contrary. What I really hate though are so called "animal rights" organizations using these poor animals for nothing more than to further their anti-human causes.Animal Rights can usually be translated as Animal Liberation which means no human use whatsoever. That includes hunting, foog, medical.Even worse these people believe that even insects have the same rights as you or your kid. They believe that if a bear wants into your home it has a right and if it wants to eat your kids you should ben powerless to stop it.They also believe that if you do kill an animal trying to kill you you should be tried for murder and shot.

If you look at some of the quotes I provided earlier you will notice the name John Goodwin.Goodwin is not only coordinator for the HSUS he is also a member of the terrorist organization The Animal Liberation Front as are many HSUS and PETA members.

I'm sorry I was sarcastic with you. The whole situation makes me sad and sick and mad, and I'm glad you helped some dogs who were sick.

The lady who trains my dog is virulently anti-HSUS and says that they are way too quick to use euthanasia as their favorite solution to
any pet predicament, and she also thinks they misuse donations.

Mostly, I just wish people would get their pet dogs neutered or spayed so the shelters didn't turn into gas chambers.
