No, not money...time. The Red Cross is sending volunteers to help victims of the California wildfires. One Hyattsville man we spoke with today has been to 17 disaster sites. Nobody's paid him a dime. The Red Cross says it gets a lot of interest in volunteering whenever a disaster strikes. In the midst of a disaster they have very little time to train new volunteers. They like to train new volunteers at times when there's not much happening. Have you ever volunteered? Do you help out on a regular basis? Or when something big happens - Katrina, 9/11?

I am a volunteer on a regular basis. It started as a necessary task when I moved to West Virginia and quit my job. In order to receive government assistance, you have to volunteer 20 hours per week. Now, I do volunteer work for several places including my daughter's school. It makes me feel good about myself even if I don't get paid for it. How many people can say that they feel good about themselves at the end of a day at work?

My job is about as much help as I can give to the rest of the world. I get paid, but I certainly feel sometimes I don't get paid enough for all the injury and pain I get at times FROM my job. Sometimes I wonder what on earth attracted me to this crazy, thankless kind of work. I used to have a much different attitude toward my work. I guess I was a lot younger then and I had that "indestructible" mentality. Of course, at my advanced age, I am still alive, have a few nasty battle scars, but I am still breathing. So maybe there is something to that "indestructible" mentality.
I used to feel good about myself at the end of a workday. Now I just feel exhausted and sore.

Sorry - too much coffee. didn't mean to click twice. I'm doing black coffee and trying to finish a 21-hour shift. My apologies.

At age 9 I decided I wanted to be a reporter and here I am. I've been at Fox5 for 8 years. Covering all kinds of news - investigations, features, you name it. I've had the privilege of meeting a lot of fascinating people. Many have been kind enough to share their stories with me. In the news business, every day is a new adventure!
