McKay's, a grocery chain in Southern Maryland, is now using "Purecarts". It's like a tiny carwash. Run the shopping carts through it and they come out the other side sanitized. The manufacturer says the system kills 99% of bacteria and germs. How dirty do you think the carts are at your grocery store? Would you like for them to be sanitized regularly?

The stores I use have started setting out containers of sanitizing wipes for our hands. I've been getting one for the cart handle on the way in and one for my hands on the way out, especially when I've handled packages of chicken or meat.

It will be cold and flu season soon, and most of the folks I see sneezing don't use a tissue, so a clean cart handle couldn't hurt.

Amen GrandmaM. My wife carries the sanitizing wipes with her, for the grocery store, etc, and especially when we eat out. You see the table tops get wiped down, but they NEVER clean the menus, salr & pepper containers and very seldom the chairs. And almmost every patron handles them.

I saw the story on the news yesterday, and this has been bugging me ever since....

The carts are pushed through a cleaner thingy that sanitizes and rinses them. So do the store personnel who puts the cleaned and sanitized carts to wherever they are stored for customers wearing gloves? It's okay if they have their dirty, germy hands on the pre-sanitized carts, but if they use their same dirty, germy hands on the cleaned carts, doesn't that defeat the purpose of sanitizing them in the first place?

caffeinated-cow, Wait till Winter weather! ever notice how BIG the ice sheets are around those self use car washes are? Now here are slip and fall lawsuit(s) just waiting to happen.
I also noticed the lack of gloves on the person pushing them through the "washer".

Starr, like I said, I don't mind if the store personnel handles them without gloves BEFORE they are sanitized, but how do they handle the carts AFTER they are sanitized?

And what about those little shopping baskets some stores provide? Are they sanitized as well?

Regardless of whatever cart sanitization practices supermarkets will put in place, I still wash my hands when I get home. And like Grandma, I use wipes or gel on my hands after I touch things like meat packages in the supermarket.
