Today D.C.'s new school modernization czar, Allen Lew, fired the contractor on the job at Hardy Middle School in Georgetown. Hardy's renovation project has had a lot of delays - many are documented problems on the part of the city. Some people think the contractor's a scapegoat. How confident are you that the changes being made in DCPS will improve facilities and education in general?

Beth, I'll bet they will not have them completed by the time you and I are dead and buried. But that stadium will be finished!

having done work for DC civil works projects till about 20 years ago I can imagine DC has contributed greatly to this project's problems ...the biggest problem that soured the firms I worked for was payment of each month's requisition ...they could drag out 90-120 days each ...the diversion of company resources for managing coordination efforts with DC goes way beyond more typical experience ...with anybody who gets any sense you learn doing business with the District is too costly and distracting...

They need to remove 2/3 of the useless incompetent layers of unqualified government Bureacrats. They almost need office monitors to get the 'workers' back to their desks to DO work instead of talking on the cellphones and drinking coffee. Seen it 1st hand. I think DC hires those who can't even get jobs at Micky-"D"S.

I'd like to see more of the top lady out and about. Her involvement at every level may help. I am not confident about the whole school system in DC, but would be if:
The parents show up every day picketing until the schools are safe and healthy places to learn. Picket somewhere visible like the mayor's office.
Adrian Fenty holds all of his appointed staff members accountable EACH MONTH for their achievements, and publishes the results.
DC schools get enough money to run things properly, along with a hardnosed administrator to make each dollar count.

At age 9 I decided I wanted to be a reporter and here I am. I've been at Fox5 for 8 years. Covering all kinds of news - investigations, features, you name it. I've had the privilege of meeting a lot of fascinating people. Many have been kind enough to share their stories with me. In the news business, every day is a new adventure!
