An armed intruder broke into an elderly Montgomery County couple's Chevy Chase, Maryland home Wednesday morning, tied them up, and assaulted the woman. Investigators are looking into whether the home invasion-robbery is related to four similar incidents dating back to September.

The homeowners told police the man, described as Latino, in his 20s or 30s and about 5'8", 130 pounds, displayed a handgun, and tied the couple up. The couple freed themselves and called police. Neither was seriously hurt.

The intruder in this incident resembles the description from four other home invasion-robberies dating back to September across Montgomery County and the District.

The first incident happened about 11:40 p.m. on September 17, 2007. The intruder broke a basement window in a home in the 7600 block of Maryknoll Avenue in Bethesda and disabled the 92-year-old victim's circuit breaker. When she went downstairs to check, the intruder tied her up and ransacked her home.

About 1 a.m. November 27, 2007, in the 5500 block of Montgomery Street in Chevy Chase, an intruder broke a basement window and knocked out a fuse. When the 77-year-old victim went to check the fuse box, the intruder tied her up and ransacked the house. The victim was able to break free and run to a neighbor's house for help.

The third incident happened in the 2300 block of 49th Street, NW, in the District about midnight on January 9. The intruder tied up the residents, an 84-year-old man and an 85-year-old woman, and stole undisclosed property.

Police say they recovered some evidence from the fourth incident, which happened about 8:15 a.m. on February 27. The 78-year-old victim told police she was outside her home in the 11000 block of Picasso Lane in Potomac when the assailant approached her, assaulted her, brought her inside the house, and tied her up. The victim was not found until two days later; she was still tied up.

"The man described as Latino", Hmmmmm.........

Those of you here that know me, know EXACTLY what I am thinking about this piece of scum's legal status here. Elderly people that have worked hard all of their lives, now living in fear beacause of some low-life gob of spit that does not want to work. This must be, "One of those jobs that only the illegals will do, because we lazy American wont do them."

MCGRUNT, I was reading that travesty on a news site. This poor 10-year old gave birth to this miscreants rape result. I simply cannot believe the parents would not allow this child to be aborted?? For or against abortion, I think this would have been VERY justifiable in this instance. As for the penalty to be dealt out to this piece of slime, legal or illegal, a bullet to the head would be my choice.

10 years old UFB!!!!

Starrman,
As usual, your post is succinct, detailed, and clear.

Home invasions are scary; no one would want to be victimized like this. I feel really sad for the elderly victims.

After reading your post, this is what I'm thinking, after having watched too many hours of Court TV:
WHY did the perpetrator change his MO
on the last home invasion? The first three incidents were late evening hours. The last, early morning, 8:15am. He's targeting what he believes to be wealthy areas, Chevy Chase, Bethesda, Montgomery County.

My uneducated guess is that he works, in some capacity, in this area, probably as a laborer, or landscaper, who spends a lot of time outdoors, which allows him to visually "case" the area, houses, and choose his next victim...

Not very physically agile (my guess is he's shorter than 5'8") not courageous either, picking on elderly people. He doesn't want anyone who can fight back, and thankfully, he's not totally vicious! His victims are alive! when he leaves.

It's very disturbing he's armed and ties up his victims. The police need to find this guy before he uses that gun (if someone tries to fight back!).

roneill, I totally agree. This is the type of bottom feeder that stays under the radar, probably a menial laborer, and is constantly looking for an EASY opportunity. My Mom and Dad, 86 and 93 years old respectively, and still in their own home and would be easy targets scares me. Thank goodness my Dad still has and is able to handle his Colt 45 pistol.

BTW, I am a BIG Moody Blues fan, and most of the music of the late 50's, all of the 60's, and early 70's. And a lot of the music from then until now, just not as much of it. Loved both of the roller coasters and the "Airplanes" by the funhouse, at Glen Echo, and road them many times

Starrman,

Hmm..."bottom feeder;" that's a new one I haven't heard. I had a nice grand fatherly psychology teacher who coined a term for these types, too. "Floor-flusher..." as in, "He was a ...total floor-flusher."
I hope they catch the guy soon!

In PREVENTING crime, so as to not become his victim, LIGHTING around the house and a good ADT/ security system that makes piercing noise upon glass break would be of great benefit! The noise would scare the intruder away; he's not very courageous, after all...he targets the elderly.

Of course,a HUGE Pit Bull or Rottweiler is strongly advised, too! They could take a bite out of crime...so to speak!

BTW, The Moody Blues are my all-time favorite group! They were at Wolf Trap last year, and I missed it. I was so upset! I want to hear them live, with a full orchestra. It would be ...beyond...awesome!

Glen Echo; it was once a fabulous park! The US Park Police watch over it now. Did you swim in the pool? That's what I liked best...and snagging a brass ring on the lovely carousel...when you threw the rings back into the cyclinder, they'd made that funky sound........such wonderful! memories!

I didn't get to go to Glen Echo that much, but when I did...........I loved every second!

roneill, like you I was not able to get to Glen Echo as much as I wanted to, until I started driving, Summer of 1960. It was pretty much on the road to demise shortly there after. Was lucky enough to spend time in their pools. The first time was when we graduated from Elementary school, Kensington Elementary, most of the class went. The Dad of my best friend growing up worked downtown DC, and would let us ride ith him to where we could take the trolley over to GE, then he would pick us up after work. Wonderful memories and days. Although it was quite a distance from our house we would also ride our bikes to the long gone Chevy Chase Lake swimming pool, down where the railroad tracks still cross Connecticut Ave, oddly enough there is still a Chevey Chase Lake Drive there. That was also another all day affair.
