Hey Fellow Fox 5'ers!

ChLooking west in late twilighteck out the western sky right after it starts getting dark. You have a PRETTY grouping of MArs, Saturn and the bright star Regulus in the constellation of Leo the Lion.

The trio will be changing their looks over the next several days so get and watch them. I'll have more details tomorrow.

Hey SkyGuy, received an interesting anagram thought that you might enjoy:

Astronomer = Moon Starer

I know, a little lame but I thought neat.

Hey..... I STARE at the Moon!!! Yup, I'm lame. But when it comes to Luna I will be whatever I have to be to observe, learn and take in the wonder of it all.

Skyguy as you know the West is pretty dead to me but I found a bit to do in the East this morning. At first I was having a great time checking out the moon then had an equally good time tracking Mercury.Intermitten cloud banks were creating a very cool effect with the moon.Even though it's down to a sliver now it was still completely visible.Spotted Mercury at about 4:45 and continued to track it until about 5:20.Could have tracked longer but passing clouds slowed down and stopped in front of it.I figure I could have tracked it for at least another five minutes or more.Stayed visible in binocs a good 20 minutes,at least, after vanishing from naked eye sight.

SkyGuy I was not inferring that you or your love of star / moon staring was or is lame. I was talking about the anagram.

Nothing more enjoyable than on a cool Summer night, than laying back in the grass and looking up into a sky that goes on forever.

Hey Starman1 - I know you weren't......I was just funnin' about myself. I AM A MOON STARER.

People who live for dark skies and the objects they contain "hate" moonlight. Not me, I love it and can't get enough of it.

I really did LIKE that anagram.

Mountaineerfan,

Did you see Earthshine on the Moon and what level of detail did you see in the terminator/face of the Moon with those new binocs of yours?

Skyguy,it's amazing! The moon finally made it high enough over the horizon(the trees)the other night for me to check out when it was just about split in two right through Tyco. The terminator itself was sharp as a razor with no fuzziness whatsoever. On the other hand the full circle of the moon was fully visible with at least some major detail visible even in the Earth shadow.
In the still lit portion details were visible down to some of the mountains and smaller craters in Mare Umbrium. In the South craters Kirtcher,Bettinus and Zucchius along with many of their even smaller counterparts were still very visible with great clarity.
Mind you that all of this was through a thick haze which eventually won out after about a half hour or so.That's been the #1 problem around here lately. So far I've probably clocked a mear few hours with my new toy.Seems like every time I get set up and start viewing more clouds roll in.Notice I say more because, for the most part, they haven't stopped for weeks.
I can tell you though that even with no more time behind the eyepieces than what I've clocked I am completely happy and am now more of a certifiable two lens freak than ever before. The only thing left to do on that binocular article is to finish up the bibliography.I should be able to post before tomorrow. After that I'll do a combo review of these binos and a bit on giant binocs. After that I'd like to follow that up with a bit on REALLY big binos just for kicks.

Very cool - wait until you get the clear fall skies near the equinox to see the same view...it will take your breath away.

The Moon will be gracing the west in the next few days so you will be able to start checking out the movement of the terminator and all of the neat shadows you can see.

CLouds and new optics go hand in hand my man....hand in hand. Looking forward to your write up.

Mountaineerfan...What type of binoculars are you looking through? They sound like really good ones, but I've never found any good enough. Yours????

Sorry y'all but the bino articlw won't be up until tomorrow. The bibliography wound up being a bit more extensive than I originally thought. The article is done though and right now I just don't feel like messing with it.Beside I now have a decission to make about how to post it.Post in the blog section in several parts, post in the message boards(but lose some of it's character)along with a blog section teaser or just go whole hog and post the whole thing in the blog section as one big whoop azz article. It covers 12 whole pages.
