Hey Fellow Fox 5'ers!

Want access to the Universe from your computer? Read NASA's Press Release on Microsoft Reserach's Worldwide Telescope:

New Software Brings the Universe to Your Computer

The incredible images from NASA's "Great Observatories" and many other NASA space- and ground-based telescopes are now available to the public in an educational and innovative manner through the release of the free WorldWide Telescope software from Microsoft.

Views of the cosmos from such observatories as NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, Spitzer Space Telescope, and Chandra X-ray Observatory can all be accessed through the same intuitive interface of exploring the night sky. Several all-sky surveys are also available through the WorldWide Telescope, including the Two Micron All-Sky Survey and the Infrared Astronomical Satellite survey. The rich multimedia software enables browsing through the visible, infrared, x-ray and other views of the universe, allowing for direct comparison of multi-wavelength observations that reveal surprising contrasts.

Other innovative features include guided tours created by scientists and educators. These tours guide users through various aspects of astronomy with narration, music, text and graphics. Members of the public, including children, will also be able to make their own tours to share with others.

The Two Micron All-Sky Survey is a collaborative effort between the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center in Pasadena, Calif., operated by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the California Institute of Technology, both in Pasadena.

The Infrared Astronomical Satellite is a joint project between NASA, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Its data are archived at the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center.

JPL manages the Spitzer Space Telescope mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington. Science operations are conducted at the Spitzer Science Center at Caltech, which manages JPL for NASA.

The computer requirements for the software are pretty significant so make sure your system can handle the program. I am downloading and installing it and will follow up on what I find.

SkyGuy, can't believe what just happened. I've got the telescope on my laptop without half trying. I just emailed someone and said I'd do it later because I thought it would take an hour. Accidently clearing stuff off the task bar, I downloaded the software!! You are wonderful for caring to sharing. Google Earth and now this. The USA is so wonderful. I don't understand it since I keep up with politics and sit in on Congress via TV. It's like two different versions of the USA. I guess I have to thank Murdoch for allowing you to do this? Just think what the military can do in Iraq right now with their laptops Just think what the Israelis could do marching into Gaza with their laptops. All we need is an InterLinear Qur'an: Arabic2Hebrew. That's because there are many educated Palestinians that can read both the Qur'an in Arabic and the Torah Scrolls in Hebrew and we can't. It's insane. We've got to take care of both sides of the Atlantic and Pacific ponds. Weapons of Mass Instruction: WMI's. Carter should use his Habitat 4 Humanity to build a mosque in Gaza.
I'm sorry for muddying up your wonderful blog and you can delete this with no hard feelings from me.

Just looked at the Earth at night. Takes some getting used to. Especially since I still remember when I was 12YO and hearing FDR announcing Pearl Harbor while my mom was hanging clothes outside on 7th&G St S.E. D.C.
FF 9/11/2001, my daughter-in-law in N.J. looked out her office window and saw the twin towers and looked again and they disappeared. We've got to be intimate with our Planet Earth. At my granddaughters wedding looked across the Hudson and saw the empty space last July. Looking forward to Lunar Project.

Hi bootsykowan - thank you as always for your kind comments.

We are all in jeopardy until the planet we call Earth becomes our main concern and we learn to co-exist with our home planet. We are walking a very fine line as a species right now with regard to the health of our planet and ultimately ourselves.

I will be blogging later today about our return to the Moon so be sure to check back.

GLAD you enjoyed WWT - quite an accomplishment by Microsoft.
