On March 22, I wrote a commentary about gun control. My comments were in response to the overturning of DC’s strict statutes wherein I came down on the side of stricter gun control to the point where I said I would even endorse a repeal of the 2nd Amendment. After all, I reasoned, the times have changed since the Constitution was written. Despite the propaganda from the gun lobby, the reasons for gun ownership and the conditions existent in those years as originally stated by the Founding Fathers no longer exist. Though the pro-gun ownership groups will deny it, the fact of the matter is that they have never – not once – been able to successfully rebut any argument presented by advocates for gun control. Every time the NRA gets backed into a corner on the issue, they quote inane catch phrases like “Guns don’t kill people. People kill people.”, or cry ‘foul’ and fall back on the last bastion on which they can rely at this moment, something which - at least for now - cannot be argued with: the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution.

In my close, I invited interested readers to voice their opinions and post comments to the blog or write directly to me at ReportFromTheFront@hotmail.com with a promise to revisit the subject after hearing what other people had to say. I then circled the wagons and prepared for a long siege.

Surprisingly, no one wrote and there were only eleven comments posted on what I felt was surely to be a very hot topic considering the firestorm that usually accompanies this subject every time it’s brought up. Considering the events in Blacksburg, Virginia today, I think it’s only appropriate to do so now.

As I said, there were only eleven comments. Eight were from pro-gun advocates relying solely on the entitlement granted by the Constitution (Of those, five were from the same person). Two comments loosely attributed the growing incidents of gun related violence to a lack of enforcement of laws presently on the books . The remaining one was a comment on the fact that the plaintiff behind the DC lawsuit wasn’t even a resident. In one of the multiple comments from the same writer, he promised to ‘burry’ [sic] me. In response to a totally unrelated posting last week, he was kind enough to inform me that he was just putting the finishing touches on the first installment of his response to the March 22 commentary. If it’s taken almost a month to formulate and he's still not done, I don’t think he has much of an argument to make.

The thing I found most interesting was that none of the respondents attempted to refute anything I said. Sure, there were the usual and not unexpected comments that the views I presented were full of holes, that I hadn’t done my research, etc. Still, no one – and I gave everyone ample opportunity – even made a half hearted attempt to factually contradict the commentary in part or as a whole.

          Not one.

Today’s events are shocking and saddening as things like this always are when they happen. If guns were outlawed and available to none, I can’t help but believe that shootings like this would eventually never occur and that gun related violence would start to become increasingly rare just through simple attrition if nothing else. My heart and prayers go out to the families of those killed and injured today along with the rest of the Virginia Tech community.

          My remarks stand.

Don't worry,Report.I got yer ball bustin' coming.Such a huge issue with so much to throw back at you I have to admit that sometimes I don't even know which way to go with it.Some of the stuff I may have to revisit several times just to cover your screw ups from every angle. Some of your assumptions really were that badly inaccurate.Besides, around this neck o' the woods we take life a little slower. It'll get done when it gets done.No use in going into panick mode like you.

Your viewpoint is too simplistic: 'If guns were outlawed and available to none....shootings like this would never occur..'. Isn't that like taking the view that if the mint printed and distributed barrels of money to everyone, we would have no poor people? The fact of the matter is, guns are here, you'll never get that genie back in the bottle. Your position is that for the irrational acts of a few, everyone must pay. Then wouldn't you have to extend that logic to, for example, driving? People have done terribly stupid things in cars, killing people, driving drunk, etc. So no one should have a car to avoid problems? Get real, all high and mighty.

For as long as there are machine shops there will be people with guns and other weapons.

Also, this was a university student on a university campus. There was nothing to prevent him from going to the Chemistry lab to mix up bombs. Recall, there were bomb threats last week, though we don't know at this point if they were related to the shootings. Placing bombs around campus, especially at student heavy areas (lecture halls, cafeterias, dorms, etc.) would be equally devastating---if you don't think so, look at the efficiency of the suicide bombers in the Middle East.

Chemistry labs also provide raw materials for poisons. We all know how the Noro virus closed several local hotels and Catholic University this year. Dropping poison in a self-serve food area, like a salad bar or a punch bowl during a party, would be equally effective--like the Jonestown massacre.

So would the lack of guns have prevented a shooting? Yes. But would the lack of guns prevent mass murder? No.

By the way, I'm neutral on the gun debate. I don't own guns, nor have the desire to own them. But I know there's more than one way to skin a cat and murder on a mass scale---ask the NAZIs how many people were murdered in the gas chambers as compared to being shot.

Hi All -
Since it appears that this commentary - like the last one - is surprisingly not drawing a great many comments, I thought I'd throw in my final words on the subject.
Please note that all of the comments posted to both blogs are all emotionally based or too broad. To date, not one respondent has attempted to factually rebut anything I've said. That alone should give the pro-gun side something to think about. Once again, you may want a gun, but in fact, you really don't need one. Relying on the entitlement granted by the 2nd amendment just isn't enough. Sorry.
To Mountaineerfan: If you're still polishing up the first installment of a response, please don't bother. It's been almost a month and you still have nothing more to say other than you'll have something for me soon. By the time you're ready, we will have all moved on to another subject.
To Fishstick and Caffeinated-Cow: Is my position simplistic? Perhaps. I agree that if someone is committed to an act of mass murder, they'll probably eventually find some way to do it depending on the ease of available means. Remember that the undeniable facilitator here was the all too easy accessibility of a firearm with which to carry out this tragic deed. All he had to do was to walk into two Virginia gun shops and present a valid ID. In each case, he was immediately able to walk out with a firearm and tons of ammunition once money changed hands. It was that simple. Had it not been so easy, perhaps Monday's events would not have ocurred and our attention would be focused elsewhere other than Blacksbur

Sorry,Report, but my installments are not soley for you so check your ego at the door.I have tons for you. What you are saying doesn't even make sense.Wouldn't it seem logical that someone who has been working on something the longest might be doing so because they have the most to say?Nice try at deception.
Another reason for stretching out my posts is to keep this subject at the forefront. You Brady Campaigners don't seem to mind trying to keep it at the forefront. After all the last time you left and now you've back much later instead of visiting your post often to discuss.
What you're doing is known as Inflation of Conflict amongst several other fallacious arguements including rhetorical questioning and reductive fallacy.I seriously doubt you are here to learn anything.
