The thought of imposing a "standard" tip is outrageous! So if the server is having a bad day, for whatever reason, and wants to take it out on the world, I am supposed to pay a tip to this person for possibly the poorest service I've ever received? Like Tony Perkins, I am a good tipper. I have taken large parties to restaraunts and tipped up to 30 percent on a tab of $150.00 dollars, but believe me, the server earned it! But if she or he had been lackluster in performing her or his duties, my tip would have been standard. Don't get me wrong, I am not asking the server to devote attention exclusively to me but make me feel like you want my service and my money. I once ate at a place in North Carolina, the only time the server came to my table was to bring the food, as I watched her repeatedly go to the other tables, smiling and talking, I noticed that my children and I were the only people of color in the entire place. When I asked for a to-go carton, she walked by and dropped it on the table and kept going. Keep in mind that when the other tables asked for these cartons, she put the food in them for the customers. Should I be beholden to give this person a restaraunt implemented "standard" tip? I left a nickel on the table to give her a message that her service left much to be desired.

I oppose 'mandatory' tipping. If the service is good, I'll tip generously. If the service is lousy, then I don't and I do so with a good conscious!

Now, I'm not a picky as other people, but I call "good" service: being seated at a cleaned table, not having my order completely screwed up (I was once served chicken when I specifically ordered the salmon), etc. I understand that the wait staff can be busy monitoring other tables and the waiter might not rush to my side the second I motion to him/her, but there's no excuse to be waiting 10 or 15 minutes for piece of silverware.

Tips create incentive for good service. If a tip becomes mandatory, the quality of the service will suffer because there is no incentive.

You both are sooo right. If they start the mandatory tipping I will not patronize the estblishment.I've been to resteraunts/bars that already do it and the service is diminished.I've also been to Europe were taxis and other service industry people the tip is included
and they still want a tip.Who are these managers/owners to decide
the criteria for good service,is there a rule book?

Years ago, I left a penny as a tip for a waitress at a pizza place I went to for lunch w/my cousin. She was awful and acted as though waiting on us was such a burden.

As a former waitress, I also oppose 'mandatory' tipping. As a waitress, I have a product to sell. People will go out to eat at the nearest restaurant if they are hungry, but they will travel to the next state for that perfect service. They will recommend the waitress to their friends, and so on. If you are on top of your game, you wouldn't need mandatory tipping.

I also oppose mandatory tipping. If I receive good service, I will tip generously; if not, the waiter or waitress gets nothing period.

I went to an IHOP once, and the waitress included her tip on the bill. I asked her what was the extra charge for and she said it was for excellent service. I told her to get her boss because I 'm not paying for something I didn't recieve.

MyBiz, I agree with you 100% about traveling for good service. About 4 times a year I go out of my way to a little carryout. Why? Because the service is good, helpful and friendly and the food is good too.

I am a lifelong, native Washingtonian a 74 graduate of Woodrow Wilson. I am proud having been a DC resident all my life. I take honor in having served my country in the US Navy as an Operations Specialist (retired due to disabling injury), at one point for five months sitting off the coast of Iran while the hostages were being held, waiting for rescue operation to start. I am a certified scuba diver, the pic is of me scuba diving in Belize I have made trips to many countries, while in the Navy and since I was retired, all over the caribbean, and many countries in Central and South America (I am fluent in Spanish). When I bought my house, I looked specifically at SE Washington, having spent some childhood years on Douglas Rd, walking along Nicols Avenue. At that time many white Jewish families lived in Anacostia and I used to cut grass and trim hedges on the weekends to make money. I remember the first black history museum that opened in the old theater, and even though the exhibits didn't change much, we'd go every weekend. I remember when John Kennedy was assasinated, he had just come to my school the year before. I remember the riots when Martin was killed, and I feared for my grandmother who was very light skinned, that she would be mistaken for white. She had to walk home from downtown to 8th and Kennedy street NW and I was so releived when I saw her. I remember her love and it sustains me, even to this day, God Bless her soul!
