Great article written from a woman's point of view.

Citizens in the District of Columbia had plenty of reason to celebrate over July 4th weekend. In addition to our nation’s birthday, countless barbeques, and a fabulous fireworks display, citizens of D.C. could finally enjoy their rights as set forth in the Bill of Rights.

For more than thirty years, D.C. has robbed its citizens of their Second Amendment rights through a draconian handgun ban. And D.C.’s gun restrictions don’t stop at handguns. D.C. also requires shotguns and rifles to be bound by a trigger lock or kept unloaded and disassembled. So much for home protection.

The justification for forbidding law abiding residents from owning weapons was that making guns illegal would lead to a reduction in violent crime. D.C.’s history is a vivid illustration of the folly of this presumption. Despite the nation’s strictest gun control laws, D.C. has one of the nation’s highest murder rates. Unfortunately for D.C.’s lawmakers and citizens, when you outlaw guns, only criminals have them.

In contrast, states with relatively loose gun rules, such as Vermont, New Hampshire, and the Dakotas, have the lowest murder rates in the country. States with high gun ownership rates (over 40 percent), such as Utah, North Dakota, and Iowa, boast firearm death rates below the national average. When criminals know that would be victims could be prepared to defend themselves, committing a crime becomes less attractive. That’s why, counterintuitive as it may seem, more guns often mean less crime.

Gun bans like D.C.’s aren’t only bad policy; as the Supreme Court decided last week in a landmark 5-4 decision that will be studied for years to come, they are also unconstitutional. In District of Columbia v. Heller, the Supreme Court struck down the ban, further stating that the Second Amendment confers an individual right to bear arms. Writing for the majority, Justice Antonin Scalia wrote, “We hold that the District's ban on handgun possession in the home violates the Second Amendment, as does its prohibition against rendering any lawful firearm in the home operable for the purpose of immediate self-defense."

And as Justice Scalia pointed out in his opinion, “the American people have considered the handgun to be the quintessential self-defense weapon.” All citizens of D.C. should rejoice at their new found freedom. But for women especially, guns are the ultimate equalizer in self-defense.

Much to feminists’ dismay, men and women are different. For better or worse, men tend to be taller, stronger, and weigh more than women. So when it comes to physical confrontation, women don’t have the best odds—especially when they are sitting ducks, as they were under D.C.’s gun ban. If nothing else, the ban emboldened criminals with the knowledge that their victims would be unarmed. But not anymore. Now women can finally rest assured that if, God forbid, there is a confrontation in their home, they will have a viable means of self-defense—regardless of the size of the intruder.

There are countless examples of women warning off intruders with the help of a gun. In June, a gun-packing mom-to-be scared off two would-be burglars who kicked in the door to her residence early in the morning. Luckily, Kristen Holbert knew how to react. She grabbed a gun, hid in a closet, and when the opportunity arose, surprised the intruders. Holbert said of the incident, “I pointed [the gun] right in their face. They turned around, seeing a pregnant woman holding a gun. …They knew they needed to get out.”

Holbert is not alone. It is estimated that law-abiding citizens use guns to defend themselves as many as 2.5 million times per year. Often times, such incidents prevent serious, violent crime against women. Take 72-year-old grandmother Jean Zamarripa, for example. When a serial rapist broke into her home, Zamarripa wounded the intruder, ending a string of violent attacks and sexual assaults on elderly women in her neighborhood.

Hobert and Zamarripa are just two of many brave women who have defended themselves and their homes against intruders, with the help of a gun. Women in D.C. will finally be given a chance to follow suit, should the circumstance arise.

D.C. v. Heller was an important first step in the battle for the individual right of self-defense. Women around the country should hope that gun bans continue to fall and afford citizens the peace of mind that only a gun—and the knowledge that you are prepared to defend yourself--can provide.

I, too am very proud of the decision to lift the gun ban in DC. However, I do not own a gun, but will learn to use one now. Thank you Supreme Court for the ability to defend myself. I will purchase and learn how to handle my handgun.

Very interesting.....who are we really trying to protect here....think about it ladies and gentlemen.

Back in the 80's and 90's (when the crack game was huge), the people in the city needed the most "PROTECTION" (as some of you would say).

Now...that crime has decreased from those days, the city is in a way better financial situation, and more white people have moved into the city.....the ban was lifted.

Hmmmmmmmm.....? Something to think about.

Not really anything to think about at all. This is just the first time in a while that someone has brought the issue before the supreme court. They can't rule against the ban if no-one brings it up.How many black people brought this issue before the supreme court in the 90's?None?None!
Like the old saying goes, the number one reason why people lose their rights is because they get taken away without anyone even knowing they had them.Given the attitudes of many black people in D.C.,like your support of Nazi style neighborhood shutdowns for instance,it doesn't suprise me that blacks not only don't know what their rights are but don't even wanna challenge it when they do know them and see them violated.Besides hoodrats have never been much on "help me to help myself" but rather "what are you gonna do to help me and protect me because you owe me".

Hey Smoovie...you're right in that now that white people have moved back into the city and have displaced the parasites there is less welfare to pay so the city is in better shape financially. It's not hard to see where the parasites have moved and where the crime has increased.

I can't wait until a few of the thugs get permanently planted.

Yes you owe all the black people in America, just like you owe all the white people in America. Freedom, equality and justice. When you start to treat the black people the way white people are treated there would be less crime and more literacy, and intelligence. Tell me what are we supposed to do when congress gives themselves raises when America is asleep. You can beleive the criminal knows their rights better than the average American. And explain to me why the criminal has more rights than the average citizen.

Also, yes the white people have moved back into the city, they have moved into condos and homes that the original Washingtonian can't afford. I want to know where these people work. All I can say is people watch your back. They are dumbing down our childred and mistreating our elderly. Where do you think you will be in the next 40-50 years.
We cant even get our childred fed.

Speaking of thugs, they will get what they deserve just like you will.

"When you start to treat the black people the way white people are treated"

Just because political hacks like Jesse,Sharpton and others con you into believing you're treated diffeerntly doesn't mean you are.

"Also, yes the white people have moved back into the city"

Could be one reason why the city has gotten safer. It didn't get safer before they moved back but because of it.

"there would be less crime and more literacy, and intelligence."

This is hillarious!D.C. screamed and cried for self rule.It got self rule and look what the blacks have done to themselves.D.C. is and has been run by blacks for many, many years now,not whites.

"And explain to me why the criminal has more rights than the average citizen."

For the most part this only applies in predominately liberasl/democrat societies....like D.C. I believe Bill Clinton refered to it as 'shared responsability" where when a crook does wrong it's your fault too. That's the liberal/democrat mantra these days and YOU'RE the ones who keep voting for them.

Mountain...I may not have agreed with a lot of what you said over the years, but I respected your knowledge of the subject.

I have to disagree with you on your last post though.

Black people will be seen as "different" no matter where they go. It's just up to both sides to take that step in order to prove we are no different than the other. Jesse and Al...just make the less informed of the problems more aware.

In that part of your email, you showed me how out of touch you are.

For the record, this law was changed by a combined effort on both sides. Before you say "...I didn't see any blacks out there supported the ruling...", read some of black periodicals and it will show you.

"Black people will be seen as "different" no matter where they go."

So what you're saying is that if I roll up into the hood no-one there's gonna act like I'm any different than them?Ask anyone who knows me and they will tell you that I am a multicultural type of person.I believe in equal legal rights for everyone no matter what. However,I do not believe you have a right to be liked by everyone or even anyone. In other words I believe people should have to tolerate others but that doesn't mean you have to like them.

"Jesse and Al...just make the less informed of the problems more aware."

Like I said before blacks screamed and cried for self rule. You got it and you got it's results.D.C. has been run by blacks for a very long time now and everything there is of,by and from blacks.

"For the record, this law was changed by a combined effort on both sides."

Both sides of what?Anti-gunners have kicked, screamed and cried for months to no end to try and convince the court to rule opposite the way they did. That includes everyone from George Bush(that's right) to The Brady Center.

"Before you say "...I didn't see any blacks out there supported the ruling"

Why would I say that?I've seen plenty of black people speak in favor of the ruling. What I was getting at is that, until now,no-one,black or otherwise, had brought this before the Supreme Court.Even the U.S. vs. Miller case of 1939 that the media kept touting as the last time it did wasn't about the 2nd or a handgun ban.It was about wether a carrying a sawed off shotgun violated some interstate trade rule and even t

cont:

It was about wether a carrying a sawed off shotgun violated some interstate trade rule and even that case wasn't ruled on until after the defendant was dead which pretty much automatically made it null and void.Just so you'll know this was the first reference in any court room of the notion of the 2nd amendment being about militias. Two bank robbers got busted with the shotgun I mentioned and the feds tried to say it was illegal, and therfore illegally transported, because it was something never used by any militia.

Understand one thing. If there is any city's population that I should have little faith in it's D.C.'s,yet despite that I have laid my reputation and a lot of future vs. current crime stats on the line to defend the Constitutional rights of it's populace.
