I know that I am taking a huge risk by asking that question. I expect to be attacked on all sides. I am obviously a large person. I find myself under public scrutiny(sp?) I think I have a healthy self-esteem, I know that I am a very nice and likeable person, yet I often feel "hated" by society. My unhealthy living has little or no affect on anyone else. I know I will hear things like the impact on the health care system, etc. But how many people really think about that when hey look at a fat person with disgust? I am simply looking for understanding. And before you go there, no, I am not the one who sits around eating twinkies all day. I know that there are some that do, but even in defense of them...why should you care? Alright, I'm ready, fire away!

None of us choose how we look, otherwise we'd all look like porn stars and rock stars.

How do I feel about fat people? I don't. Who are you and what are you about? That's what I'd want to know.

Why do you feel you are under "public scrunity"? And why do you feel "hated by society"? Do people point, laugh or make fun of you? I try not to look at anyone with disgust....whatever their size may be.

As a plus size male myslef, I do feel that people look at me first then draw conlclusions about my personality or qualifications based on my physical appearance. You run into the people that don't care how you look and then there are the other days where you are as welcomed as George Bush at the Million Man March! LoL My biggest complaint is people would look at a plus size person AND AUTOMATICALLY ASSUME they are unhealthy. How ignorant can you be? The sad thing is this mentality is being taught to kids! Like looking at a cop and automatically assume he's crooked. Eventhough there are some health problems that are linked to obesity, not every plus size person have them. They say that the majority of all new AIDS are black women. I'm not going to look at every black woman as an AIDS case. Not every one was meant to look the same. God made it that way so you can be unique. It makes me sick when I see people looking at the (entirely too skinny) models and think that is sexy! Heck no!!! That sends the wrong messege to the kids especially young girls because they seem to suffer from this the most.

We all come in certain shapes and sizes. I think nobody should be treated differently because of size.

Donna,
yes, sometimes, is the answer to your question. what's worse is that it's from adults. kids will be kids. I understand that, but grown folks? Hey, I'm not looking for symphathy here and I truly appreciate the kind remarks. It has help to restore my faith in humanity. My motto is "live and let live."

Depending on the reason for the person being overweight. Someone that will go to mcdonalds and order a diet coke (even if the meal is small) I would consider sligtly wrong,,,, but the people that eat and eat and eat and eat and then cry bout being overweight I truely hate. But I slightly overweight person that has no problems admiting they are and dont think bout dieting just eat like they want I consider truely smart.

I've been on both sides of the fence. I was 50 pounds heavier than I am today. When I was at my highest, people didn't think twice about serving me huge portions of food---in fact, they expected me to have a "good appetite". Now I can eat a few bites and no one blinks an eye: no one implores me to 'eat some more', because they don't expect me to have a 'big appetite'.

The worse was when I was losing weight. Oh my! People who never cared if I was fat and unhealthy all HAD to volunteer their opinions on weight loss. But what was worse were those so-called "friends" who knew I was on a weight loss regimen and who would sabotage my efforts whenever they could. I remember this one luncheon I had with some "friends". They all sat there telling me to take "one bite" of cake because I've been "so good sticking to that diet" and I "deserved" to reward myself. They would also taunt me by saying stuff like "Oh you it's too bad you can't eat this because you're on a diet. But it's soooooo gooood! Yum!" Whatever. The funny thing about it is I'm 50 pounds lighter and they're 20 pounds (and more) heavier. Karma is a great thing!

If it's not someone's weight it's their looks. People are critical of others for some reason or another. It's how you treat and respect others for who they are not the outside packaging. I have been treated badly because I am what would be considered very attractive. Alot of women are very jealous and hostile towards me but the men go overboard with the attention. If I am dealing with a male in a public situation I get more than enough attention but if it's a female...forget it, I'm doomed. I am a kind and very nice person but another woman (most women) does not care they just see the face and body. And the green monster appears. So you see, there is judgement being done to all of us.

if people hate you for your weight they arn't worth having as freinds or even worth acknowledgment most of the "prettyboys" I grew up with are now looking a little less "pretty" ie,fat bellies, losing hair(but still carry the ponytail) and I do not look too much different. don't sweat it y'all the pretty people all get older and less "pretty" but stay just as petty

my grand dad was a whopping 150 lbs and had a triple bypass, my father was 200 or so and had a triple bypass and had cancer twice. exercise, eat right, die anyway. the best you can do is not degrade your bodies by self poisening(cigerettes, too much booze, drugs) and live a healthier life. honestly FAT HAPPENS

Fat might happen, but you can decrease your risk of chronic diseases by improving your health. So you shouldn't give up and say "well I'll die anyway."

Don't eat processed foods and artificial foods. Don't make it a habit of overindulging your food---a slice of cake is okay to have, but not every day or every week. Eat vegetables and fruits (not juices). And make sure you get exercise.

And whatever you do, don't believe that Food Pyramid BS. It's not nutritionally sound. The FDA was paid off by the grain and cereal industry--that's why it stresses grains and cereals. The bottom tier of the pyramid should be vegetables, because veggies are low cal, and high in vitamins, minerals and other nutriative compounds that grains do not contain.

when I see an overweight person, I dont see them with disgust .. I see them with concern. I was an EMT was 10 years and it bothered me a great deal for many reasons. I worry about the weight on their joints and their hearts and everything else.I have held 30 something year olds in my arms and watched them die from congestive heart failure, with their kidneys not functioning and being on dialysis for a while.

I also worried for my crew when we had to lift a heavy person out of a car. I had this one woman go off on me because I had to call for help to get her out of a car that had been in a wreck. Me and my partner weighed about a 140-150 lbs each and even though we were quite fit, trying to lift a 300+ female out of a car on a backboard was not something we enjoyed. contd

I can tell you some tales ... but then someone is going to get bent out of shape and today I am not in the mood to go mano a mano verbally !!!

So if any of you are overweight please do something for yourself. Even a few pounds lost gets the strain off your hearts and your joints, drops your BP etc etc. Good luck !

Well, I eat a lot of "processed" and "artificial" foods, and I'm not overweight. Why? Moderation and exercise, nothing more special than that. True, some people are more susceptible to becoming overweight than others, so it's important to find the right combination for yourself.

And remember -- people can become fat from eating too much "natural" foods, too.

Phillie, I did write " Don't make it a habit of overindulging your food---a slice of cake is okay to have, but not every day or every week. "

If you are eating multiple portions of any food and not getting enough exercise, then you'll probabaly gain weight. Unless you 1. have an over-active thyroid, or 2. have the genetics that doesn't allow fat storage.

The problem is alot of people have no clue what a 'normal' portion of food is. Restaurant style salads contain 4-6 cups of lettuce----that's 4-6 servings of raw veg. 3 oz meat is 1 serving. 1 slice of bread is 1 serving. 1/4 of a large bagel is 1 serving. 3/4 cup fruit juice is 1 serving.

As for processed and artificial foods----it's just not weight gain one should worry about eating that garbage! There are health issues with them. Trans fats are processed and artificial and have been responsible to clogging arteries and increasing cholesterol for the last 40 years.

You are what you eat.

When I see an overweight person, I wonder how they got that way without contolling it. I have watched plenty of programs that I can fairly understand that it's a mental thing now. I also tend to think that it must be hard for them to walk around like that. I am a nice person when it comes to weight because I am around friends and family that are overweight and I don't want to contribute to their low self esteem.

I am small and I wonder why I always have to hear from a big person, how am I so small. Everybody has insecurities with different things but why is it okay for big people to ask and not skinny people to ask how they got so big. It's a double standard to me. I am very sick of hearing this from a bigger person. It's to the point that I don't know whether to take it as a compliment or not.
