Am I alone with my resentment of having to press 1 for English? Yes, I understand that there is a large number of Hispanics that have limited skills in understanding and/or speaking English - but who's problem is that? Is there another country that adjusts they're way of life for the Americans? In France, do you press one for French? I doubt it. Why are we making it easy? Why aren't these people forced to become fluent in our language? How many orders at the drive-thru have you had to repeat several times and still the order isn't right?

You maybe read how the Commonwealth of VA is resisting giving English proficiency tests to immigrants. The rationale is that they can't pass it so why give it. They have some alternative exam they will give instead. Why do this? Is someone's self esteem going to be crushed? Is it a bad thing to understand what level of understanding is necessary to be fully functional in American society? Follow the logic and what do you do with driving, for example. No permit exam because they can't read? Oh, I forgot, we'll give them the exam in non-english, so this person can get out on the roads and not be able to read signs on the highway.

You are certainly not alone. As you say there is a large number of Hispanics with limited English speaking skills and catering to them is not going to encourage them to assimilate into our society, why should they learn when this country makes it so easy for them not to learn. It is very aggrivating for us to deal with this in everyday life but it is also an expense for the taxpayers. I know that schools are having to deal with the cost of printing letters and such in Spanish so that parents can read them, local governments are going to the expense of printing forms and literature in Spanish, hiring Spanish speaking employees and buying Spanish software. We need to make English our official language on a Federal level rather than state-by-state and we need to stop accomodating these people.

I feel the same way on this subject. I'm tired of having to opt for English in my own country! I've never been to France, but you better believe if I go, I'm learning their language first. I don't expect them to change their ways for me. I actually went to a store, and there was a young lady in the aisle putting away merchandise, and I asked her where a particular item was in her department. She couldn't help me, she couldn't speak english. Talk about poor customer service!

Absolutely fully agree with everyone so far. One of my biggest peeves is whenever you are watching the news, and they interview someone on the street. Most of these people are Americans, and they sound almost illiterate.
My vote goes for teaching EVERYONE English, and if you don't like it.....well go back over the fence., and keep your non-English comprehension butts there.

They do have to go over the fence. i know people that dont know english, but their learning. now i think ya'll are acting like lttle babies. Ya'll geting mad over Spanish people not knowing english!! Well i know a mother who is spanish she is learning english everyday. So dont tell me that the spanish people come over here and not speaking our language. Kids are the ones BLEEP about everything. ya'll are adults acting like babies.

I so agree with you Lil_Angel. I am pretty sure that they really don't mind the language, the truth is that wether they admit it or not, this all has to do with racism. They find any petty excuse to speak bad about us. And for their information english is becoming the second language in many spanish countries. They also do cater and accomadate americans. We latinos are more humble and accepting than americans. You want us out, then stay away from our countries! Please stop crying about others not understanding your language. One more thing americans fail to realize is the fact that the education in foreign countries is more advanced the US. It's been on the news several times, and if in case you did not know already perhaps you should read about it and educate your selves because you are all acting out on ignorance. This country would be nothing without immigrants, and as much as it hurts the spanish language is here to stay so deal with it! Oh by the way, thanks for catering to our needs!

Proud2belatina ... Not all hispanics are bad .. I am married to a Puerto Rican ... he has a Masters Degree and was recently retired from the military and he does not agree with having to have Spanish translation for everything .. If you went to Mexico and asked for something in English you think they would give a s... that you cant speak spanish ? You think Spanish stores have translations in English all around the Store ? I lived in Spain for 3.5 years and I never saw any place that had information in English ... and they looked at you funny if you didnt speak the local language .... English is the Universal language of Commerce and in the US. Learn to speak the language of the land. Pretty soon we will be having billboard size signs on our highways because of the stupidty of people not wanting to learn the language of the land. We are the only ones who have ATT with multilingual operators that hospitals have to call so they can translate for patients who cant speak English. I was in Puerto Rico in 89 where I had my 2nd child and the Nurses in the delivery room/maternity ward couldnt speak a lick of English and I couldnt speak a lick of Spanish and yes my hubby was away on deployment ... it was an extremely painful birth and I conclude the language barrier had a lot do with it. So Latina before you bash the rest of us, show some respect for the land you live in and learn the language so the rest of us dont have to pick up your slack ....

This country was based on Immigrants .. yes if they came here legally. If we are to reward the illegals who are breaking the law in c

then lets set the rapists, pedophiles, murderers etc free. They too broke the law and should not be discriminated against. Illegals are no better ....

I became a citizen of this country in 97 'LEGALLY and have paid my taxes and assimilated into this society. I have volunteered my time in my community. I do not ask this country to pander to my needs. I am an AMERICAN .. I became that in '97. I love the red, white and blue and the Stars and Stripes mean morre to me than hot dogs and fireworks on the 4th of July. This country has much to offer ... embrace it ... if you dont like it, please leave ...

I do not have patience for those who whine when they dont get it their way. English is the language of the land. Learn it. Dont expect the rest of us to pander to YOUR ignorance just because you dont want to learn the language. If you were in France you would be learning the language before you became a citizen. The problem with this country is Groups such as the ACLU and others have slowly emasculated this country of its rules and we need to fight back. It starts with each of us and we need to let the politicians know how we feel about the whole immigration issue.

Mexico treats its illegals very badly. Ask any Gautemalan etc who sneak into Mexico and get caught how they are treated, The women and girls are raped by the guards and the men are beaten and killed and the mexicans have the balls to scream that we are not being fair !!!! I like to know what planet are these idiots living on or what they are smoking ....

Lady, I would dont really care to live

Okay, my comments were not to incite some kind of racists "riot" in words. I have absolutely nothing against Hispanics or any other immigrant. I certainly did not mean to insinuate that Hispanics were stupid or anything of the sort. I grew up in NY state with a large Hispanic community. We had no problem communicating. However, in this area, there are more non-American born Hispanics and MANY of them don't SEEM to be trying to learn English. If I am wrong, forgive my ignorance. And for you proud Latinos(and you should be proud of your heritage), if you have mastered the language or are trying, please encourage your "brothers" and "sisters" to do the same. I believe in tolerance of all of our differences, but don't be mad at Americans for not wanting to cater to you. Peace.

Millange, you didnt incite anything ... just a lot of emotion on something that is playing on everyone's mind.

I just cant stand it when the US is held to blame for everything including whats ails everyone when they wake up in the morning ..

Debate is good .. it brings about change. Sometimes things have to said .. I do not believe in being politically correct ... I call it the way I see it. Being PC is the cowards way out. Thats what ails this country ... too much pandering going on ...

I could care less of what you say or think. Immigrants do try to learn the language, and I was born im MD so I am citizen mind you! Slack? You want to bring up slack? Why don't you clean up your own mess, watch your own children, cut your own lawn, do your own dirty laundry, and stop speaking badly of latinos? They work hard for their money doing things that some americans won't do! What makes you think that latinos don't try or want to learn the language? You must be a mind reader to speak out for everyone that way. My partner is also puerto rican and he agrees with me 100% percent! You seem to be missing a sensitivity chip somewhere in your head! Do not forget that your ancestors are aliens (a name we were given by americans) as well. The US did not belong to you and it was built off of immigrants in case you never took HISTORY class. Where did the americans migrate from? I'm sorry I did not hear you, say it louder! And why did you seperate and chose to leave from Europe? To make a better life right? It just happens to be that you spoke english already and the american english language isn't even correct at all! What gives you the right to judge immigrants? Just as there are bad hispanics there are bad caucasians! How could you start your comment with "not all hispanics are bad"? That tells me right there that you are racist against latinos! Just because they do not know the english language it does not make them bad. I could care less about your puerto rican husband who has a masters that does not make him any better. You seem to think that because your husb

You seem to think that because your husband is puerto rican, had a masters and served the US in the millitary makes him better than immigrants? What does education have to do with the worth of a person? Education improves a person yes but it does not mean that they are better than others. Oh and about your story of having your second child in puerto rico back in 89 and about no one speaking english in puerto rico which made it difficult for you to communicate with the nurses. Um hello! It was back in 89! Please, it was the same here for hispanics who did not know english. Oh wait, I understand that the fact that this was ancient history makes it difficult for you to remember!

And just to set the record straight, I have nothing against this country nor americans. I just wish people would stop and think before they judge someone for something so completly stupid. Is it really that bad to have to hear "For english press one" you have to take a minute for the introductory anyway such as "welcome to sprint, bla bla bla"! Please stop using excuses to attack us for any petty little reason. We are not bad people! Most immigrants leave their countries because of neccesity. Do you think that they really want to leave their loved ones? Do you think that they really want to risk their lives traveling down here?

I know a native woman from Guatemala who cleans 34 buildings at an apartment complex mon-fri to send money back home to her daughters who live very poor. On top of that her employer pays her $6.50 an hour for all that work. She left Guatemala because her husband was killed in a car accident and had to support her children. She hasn't seen them in 6 years and because she can't speak the english language and came here walking miles for months not knowing if she would live to see tomorrow makes her a bad latina? I just don't understand what is wrong with people. Complain about anyone who commits a serious crime I'll agree with you 100%! I have NOTHING against americans, nor this country! So don't you dare put words in my mouth you! I was born here and I love it here! My family is very mixed now, and even my two nephews mother is caucasian! Get on your knees and ask God to forgive you for being EVIL!

OOH seems like I hit a nerve ... never said I was better than you. you came to that conclusion on your own .. lady I mow my own lawn, wash my own clothes, take care of my own kids and everything else you say ... I have never paid anyone to do anything for me ... I cant afford it. Gotta work so they can take more money out of my paycheck to support all the hangers on ...

The point I was trying to make about my hubby was not to let you know that he is above anyone .. I was trying to make the point that hispanics are educated too ... I do not have to lord over anyone ... I am sorry if your inadequacy makes you feel that way ...

I am quite confident and secure in my own achievements. I am quite educated in American History. The fact that I received all my education overseas puts me one up against you since you have decided to bash the education system in the US.

I do agree with you people come here to better themselves ... but do it legally is what the debate is all about. Dont come here and exect a handout because we all have to pay. Our elderly cant afford medical care. I have worked in Emergency Rooms where I have seen expensive medical tests to include CAT scans being given to illegals because you cant turn people away from the ER but citizens of this country who have paid social security and taxes for years have to wait to some HMO etc to let the doctor know that they can have a test to save their lives ... you think that is fair ? You think people are not sitting up and taking notice how unbalanced things are because a segment of society is breaking the law with no repercussions ? There has to be repercussions. That is why every country has rules and regulations and without them the land is lawless and bad things happen ...

And about my Sensitive Chip it got stolen by an illegal !!!!

Oh don't try and change things up now. And again education has nothing to do with anything so there was really no point of you bringing up the masters that your husband recieved. The taxes taken out of your pay check do not go towards immigrants you idiot. It goes for the war and people living off of welfare who nothing better to do that sit around. Immigrants don't have help from the government because they aren't entitled to it for being an immigrant. Remember? If you have to hear "por favor pressione numero dos para espanol" from major companies is not to meet our needs but because immigrants and latinos make them money! They want to be understood in order to make money from immigrants because they are the biggest minority group! If you see adds on the bus it's to make sure their PAYING CUSTOMERS are treated equally like everyone else! Stop crying over something so petty! Funny thing that I can afford to pay to get my lawn cut but you can't and I still pay taxes. I also have my own town home, am a young 23 year old mother of a four year old, and a college student at that! Doesn't your husband have a masters? My father was an immigrant but is now a citizen. He never graduated from High school, (not because he did not want to) is a good citizen and owns a beautiful house which he worked hard for! He never lived off your taxes or anyones!

Proud2beLatina
Jan 30, 2007 | 10:55 PM

That is a lie. Anyone who goes to the emergency room has to wait, wether you have insurance or not! Like you said no one can be turned away. And so you are saying that if an american is in a waiting room and perhaps has an ear ache but an immigrant comes in with perhaps a deep wound he should wait because he isn't a citizen? Patients are normally seen by a first come first served basis, unless the medical condition is severe. I can argue with you all night but this is pointless. You have your oppinions and I have my own. I meant no offense to anyone. Immigrants do not blame nor do they expect for americans to cater to their needs. I am just tired of people putting them down. Your husband cannot be compared to immigrants because he is puerto rican which makes him a citizen from birth. I just want everyone to know that it hurts to be critisized and categorized into some category. Most immigrants are good people and would die for this country as well.
