Normally I don't like to advocate in my blog -- but this time, I'm going to make an exception.  Small businesses need your help.  In April, bankruptcies for small businesses hit their highest level since 2005.   We can't afford to let the little guys go under.   Small business accounts for 99 percent of non-governmental employers, and contributes 40 percent of our gross domestic product.    Partner America, a consortium that represents small businesses... says the government needs to do more to help them.   It's suggesting the same low loan rates that wall street companies can borrow at... economic disaster relief packages... and dramatic increases to the Small Business Administration budget.   Whether you agree with government intervention or not -- we can all make these tough times a little easier for the mom & pops by patronizing their businesses.    So the next time you want coffee -- go to the local cafe instead of a national chain.   Pass up the big box retailers now and then -- and visit the corner store.    You'll be doing our small businesses, and our retail landscape - a lot of good.

Well the corps are taking over they have the money , trust me it is not like in the early days where a small bussiness ment some thing and they did care about your needs no longer.

It's a sad comment that Wal-Mart, Starbucks, Target and K-Mart are destroying the Mom & Pop stores, but they will always win by shear numbers. They can discount in Virginia and gouge in Kentucky AND THEY DON'T CARE!

It's a nice thought to try to help out the small businesses but I tend to agree with "greedywal" that the concept of "customer service" has disappeared from our economy and that leaves only a price choice, which in turn leads us to the corporations.

If small businesses could be more caring and customer oriented they might survive, but in the long run the corporations will out-spend and out-discount them into submission.

Small businesses are dropping fast here in Leesburg. We lost the Mighty Midget BBQ, and Johnson Char Beef House. The only thing opening in town are Banks. In a 150 yard stretch coming into town there are now 9 Banks. I could keep counting, but I have to turn to get to my house. Really how many banks does one small town need? It's looking very sad.

I miss the small businesses. I felt that lost when I visited Danville, VA. Nothing but small businesses around there. They were talking to me like they knew me for years and wanted to know about me. If felt nice. I came back to DC and just felt like going back ASAP! Just a totally different feel.
