My county landfill has an EXCELLENT recycling program. Also all the homeowners were given the recycling bins. These are no longer put out on trash days because of the activities of a group of neighbors who regularly go around on trash days to steal the metal cans, newspapers and plastic jugs and bottles.
Calling the police on these criminals does no good, since the officers cannot catch them in the act. The stolen recyclables are taken by the theives to the landfill so they can collect the refund money,
Things have gotten so bad in my community, that most residents put the recyclable trash in the bottom of the trash bin, and put the other household waste on top. This defeats the purpose of the recycling program.
Very few people are still alive who can remember the hardships of the Great Depression during the 1930's period. As one who lived through this grim period of history, I can say without fear of contradiction that we are on the cusp of another period of upheaval that will make the worst periods of the 1930's seem like "the good old days".
There is NOTHING currently available to prevent the new Great Depression. The bailout package being debated in Congress is too little and too late. It is a blatant attempt by George W. Bush to try and avoid being tarred with the same black brush that ruined the reputation of Herbert Hoover and his administration.
The author was right when he pointed out that "Those who do not learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past."
I am only sorry that so many peope will be made to suffer from the greed of a few individuals who belong in jail, instead of being Wall Street Tycoons.
