During World War II not only was gas rationed but many luxuries and food items as well.

Example:

Friday, April 23, 1943

GASOLINE - A, B and C coupons each are worth three gallons. T coupons are good for five gallons each. The A coupons numbered 5 must last through July 21, which is double the time of previous ration periods. B and C books bear own expiration dates.

SUGAR - Coupon No. 12 in War Ration Book 1 is good for five pounds, but this must last through May 31.

In today’s economic crisis and looming recession concerns is it possible to set aside one month out of the year to cut back gas usage?  Are Americans of today willing or able to pull together as before?  What are you willing to ration or give up for just one month to help out the country and economy?

Note: this is not about the War on Terror or War in Iraq in general, even though they are sure to be impacting all of us in some way or opinion. This is just a simple question to see what you may be willing to give to your country during a crisis.

MCGRUNT, far too many people can not even come close to relating to the idea of cutting back, and pulling together for the good of all.
We all now, regretfully, live in the me, me, me, generation. You see it in every aspect of life 0n a daily basis. From our elected and corrupt government officials, big business, right on down. Simply watch the nightly news, or programs like TMZ, and observe the gross abuse of opulence of many people, that too many of the masses look up to and want to mimic. For everyone willing to give up something, there are a thousand that would not, and ten thousand that would screw over the ones that do. I could go on and on, but I hope you are able to understand where I am coming from.

I usually catch the last couple of minutes of that show TMZ as I'm waiting for The Simpsons to come on.The other day on that show I saw the perfect example of why most people like that wouldn't go along with rationing. They had just done a story on that guy from "Bachelor",Andy Baldwin, and his trip to Palau for the Navy in search of a B-24 bomber that went down in WW2.Of course the idiots at TMZ just didn't get it and totally bashed the military for spending 52 mill a year to recover old soldiers.
Anyhow, two of the TMZ staff got into it over this issue. One was the blonde girl and the other was the little surfer dude that looks like a little blonde girl. The surf dude pretty much summed up most young people's attitudes today when he said "well I didn't have anything to do with it".
Pretty much says it all really. The ol' "it's not MY problem" attitude.

Thank you I've been bitching about that for years.
Verizon is the only one to change it.

MCGRUNT, I'm willing to "use it up, wear it out and/or do without it", but have to admit my attitude is not entirely for altruistic reasons. I am a bit stingy with money because we have had to work so hard to earn it and to save. I WILL NOT pay over $3.00 for a loaf of bread. I'll bake my own, and already have bags of bread flour and packages of yeast stored in the freezer. While I'm baking bread, I'll also bake chicken, and meatloaf, and spaghetti sauce, and I'll freeze that up, too. Less electricity to pay for.

I'm retired, and I don't spend money on new clothes as long as the old ones still cover me up, and my jeans still look fine.

Although we love to travel, we won't take the motorhome out this year. We'll have our vacation at the park where we store the rig.

Here's my plan. I will look for beauty around me and give thanks for it. I'll be thankful for a roof over my head, and books to read, and healthy grandkids. I'll feel blessed to have plumbing and fresh water to drink. I will strive to not be greedy, but to be grateful instead. I won't ask for any handouts, but will try to share when folks need a hand.

Those are old fashioned ideas, but they work.

Some of the hard parts of rations in days of old, is today, in 1943, I would guess that most people lived within 5 miles of their place of employment. Today here in this area many people can not afford to live near thier work and therefore live far away from their place of work, this makes getting to work very difficult; not impossible as long as mass transit is available.
Some areas of our country would do ok, it would be interesting to see how we could and would accomodate a rationing system.

I'll be the first to admit I am a naysayer when it comes to today's American public. Many people today don't want to take responsibility, are ready to sue at the drop of a hat, and are spoiled beyond belief.

Having said that, I have to think of the miracle that happened on a day in our not too distant past...9/11. It was amazing to see people come together and actually help neighbors and total strangers. I felt such a sense of pride to see our beautiful flag displayed like I'd never seen before.

Maybe, just maybe Americans could pull together. I can only hope.

GrandmaM, your "old fashioned" ideas are great!

And remember the 1970's odd and even license plate rations for gasoline? Are we going to tap into our Texas oil again? I hear that some of those wells are not "on" because we find it cheaper to get oil from Iraq. True?

The truth is that this war will milk the country dry..World War II could not be avoided. This mess we are in now was started based on lies and poorly executed from the beginning. There are only a hand full of people that is prospered from this atrocity and they started it in the first place.

Now we have a whole new, overly educated society who lacks the one thing they don't seem to teach in college "COMMON SENSE!" They are totally devoid of compassion and have changed the Golden Rule to "DO UNTO OTHERS & DO IT FAST!" It'e the I've got mine, now I want YOURS generation! Let's see how wasteful we can be! Screw everybody else! Our country's becoming one HUGE disfunctional family! "CUT IT OUT!!!" Let's not become our own worst enemy!
