Police: McCain volunteer made up robbery story  10/24/2008 3:35:00 PM Associated Press/AP Online
By JOE MANDAK

PITTSBURGH - A McCain campaign volunteer made up a story of being robbed, pinned to the ground and having the letter "B" scratched on her face in a politically inspired attack, police said Friday.

Ashley Todd, 20-year-old college student from College Station, Texas, admitted Friday that the story was false and was being charged with making a false report to police, said Maurita Bryant, the assistant chief of the police department's investigations division. Police doubted her story from the start, Bryant said.

Todd, who is white, told police she was attacked by a 6-foot-4 black man Wednesday night. She now can't explain why she invented the story, Bryant said.

Todd also told police she believes she cut the backward "B" onto her own cheek, but she didn't explain how or why, Bryant said.

Todd initially told investigators she was attempting to use a bank branch ATM when the man approached her from behind, put a knife with a 4- to 5-inch blade to her throat and demanded money. She told police she handed the assailant $60 and walked away.

Todd told investigators that she suspected the man then noticed a John McCain sticker on her car, became angry and punched her in the back of the head, knocking her to the ground and telling her "you are going to be a Barack supporter," police said.

She said he continued to punch and kick her while threatening "to teach her a lesson for being a McCain supporter," police said. She said he then sat on her chest, pinned her hands down with his knees and scratched a backward letter "B" into her face with a dull knife.

Todd told police she didn't seek medical attention, but instead went to a friend's apartment nearby and called police about 45 minutes later.

The Associated Press could not immediately locate Todd's family.

Bryant said somebody charged with making a false report would typically be cited and sent a summons. But because police have concerns about Todd's mental health, they are consulting with the Allegheny County District Attorney.

Todd remained in custody, and police were preparing to charge her with making a false report to police.

"We had some serious cases going on, and this wasted so much time," Bryant said. "Our detectives have been working through the night just to verify the information we suspected was false from the beginning."

Todd worked in New York for the College Republican National Committee before moving two weeks ago to Pennsylvania, where her duties included recruiting college students, the committee's executive director, Ethan Eilon, has said.

Eilon declined to comment on the investigation Friday or to help The Associated Press contact Todd.

Earlier Friday, police said they had found inconsistencies in Todd's story. They gave her a lie-detector test, but wouldn't release the polygraph results. Investigators also said bank surveillance photos did not back up the woman's initial story of being attacked at an ATM.

Police interviewed Todd after she contacted police Wednesday night and again on Thursday, Bryant said. They asked her to come back Friday, ostensibly to help police put together a sketch of the man. Instead, detectives began interviewing her.

"They just started talking to her and she just opened up and said she wanted to tell the truth," Bryant said.

Bryant said it doesn't appear that anyone else put the woman up to the false report.

Police suspected all along that Todd might not be telling the truth, starting with the fact that the "B" was backward, Bryant said.

"We have robbers here in Pittsburgh, but they don't generally mutilate someone's face like that," Bryant said. "They just take the money and run."

(This version CORRECTS that police were preparing to charge Todd, not arraigning her.))

My husband told me when he saw the news this morning that he KNEW it was a lie because no assailant would have carved a "B" into her face backwards.  Dont even talk to me about "stooping" to a new low - the McShame camp has just taken that award.

 She must be Sarah Palin's cousin - too stupid to know that you cant stand in front of a mirror, carve something on yourself and NOT have it come out backward.  Priceless!!

Madsmom;
About your concluding statement;

Is this really fair of you to say this about the McCain camp and Sarah Palin? Do you honestly think McCain or anyone else associated with him had anything to do with this?

I think you are better than this! Don't get caught up in the ridiculous thoughts and accusations of others here who obviously have a "MOB MENTALITY" at the moment! Slanderous accusations are running ammuck these days, and all too commonplace. So Sad!

It is not easy to do, but try to keep your "elevated" status among bloggers here. Again, I think you are better than this!

I see great irony in your title here and your own thoughts...."Talk about stooping to any level and saying ANYTHING!".

The irony is that I would not have expected these "low and unfounded" thoughts from this author.

The sad thing about this is that it draws attention away from all of the psycho `Bama supporter lead attacks that actually did occure last week.

So ONE PERSON makes an entire group "BAD" ???

By that logic the ENTIRE 0bama campaign is WORSE for the Votr Fraud that 0bamas client - ACORN is perpetrating on the country, the violent thugs shooting up peoples houses who have McCain signs in their yards, and the list goes on and on.

GET SOME PERSPECTIVE!!

Y3Y3;
That "one person" is a 20 year old college student with obvious mental problems. It's her desperate cry for help and attention that is the real issue here, not the association with the McCain campaign.

It's one thing to denounce the girl for her stupidity, but quite another to accuse the McCain campaign of stooping down to this level, which is just not true!

My, My, My... with all these disassociating phrases, I wonder what would have happened if the POLICE would have went out looking for a 6 ft African American male, forced him to stop because we all look a like, decided to take the law into their own hands (i.e., judge, jury and executioner) or [falsely] arrested him because of this deranged GOP liar...

But oh, if this would have happened, it would have been; "Crucify him!, Crucify him! the men began to shout."

You people are so "one sided" that, if it were any more to complete your ranks, this planet would tip off of it's proper axis....

I bet the majority of you were waiting and hoping that this phantom attacker was caught so that you could have something more to add to Obama’s negative GOP make pretend list…

What was amazing to me is that many people overlooked the fact that this is the oldest trick in the book when it comes to crimes against white women, it is always the BBG. In case many of you do not know that acronym it is Big Black Guy is always to blame, it was done in Rosewood, it was done throughout history and now John McCain’s camp is resurrecting this old myth. I am sick to death of my people being exploited by whites to make them look good to the “Real American” people as we all know that any person of color is not an American in people’s mind, we as people need to change this way of thinking as all people of color are not criminals as many will have you believe.

To answer your question;
"I wonder what would have happened if the POLICE would have went out looking for a 6 ft African American male, forced him to stop because we all look a like, decided to take the
law into their own hands (i.e., judge, jury and executioner) or [falsely] arrested him because of this deranged GOP liar..."

Then every police officer involved and the girl should be brought up on charges and prosecuted!

And you final statement above is just another one of your racist lies. Plain and simple!

By the way;

Where is the proof that the McCain campaign was behind this act??? Isn't that what this blog is about?

You two "tout" about staying on subject, don't you? The subject here is the McCain campaign stooping down to this level, which is the current "lie" which replaced the girl's!

How about that?

Here is the quote from above, incase you missed it!

"Dont even talk to me about "stooping" to a new low - the McShame camp has just taken that award.

Are you backing this statement by Madsmom, or not?

That'll never happen... Not here in the good ole' US of A.....

"You two "tout" about staying on subject, don't you?
NO... I never tout about staying on subject... I go where the conversation flow... Makes me no difference....

"And you final statement above is just another one of your racist lies."
I am not a racist... just doing what the forestry service due when they build back fires to combat brush or forest fires... Only with this technique I'm using, it's termed as building ignorant and simple replies to combat racist, bigotry and ignorant statements...

You spelled "your" wrong... you forgot to add the "r" to "you in YOUR statement...

Let me approach this form a different view that you may be able to relate to...

When this child [and, I say child because I'm old enough to be her father] made this allegation, it was all over the news but when a man made the same statement of being shot [although most don't know it was with a ball bearing gun] because he was wearing an Obama T-shirt, it only surfaced on the internet and then, was rebuked / rebutted as being false in nature. Most expressed the thoughts of it being fabricated by blacks to support Obama... Anything that is negative or can be pinned on the Obama campaign seems it is from the bible with some. It’s not the campaign itself, it’s the color of the man’s skin. You and no one can tell me this because you know it’s true but will not admit it. It would be portrayed that he’s a messiah, Muslim, terrorist, extremist and so on.

On another note; MADsMom probably didn’t have all the information when she wrote this blog so, all of you come out for the blitzkrieg and wanted to make a mountain out of a mole hill. I’m saying this; she had all rights to post what she wanted because others due on this blog site and others but whatever is posted, some of you need to acclimate yourselves into responding in a manner that’s acceptable and understood thereby producing a positive dialogue and not a contest of words by resorting to name calling and other derogative, disruptive measures.

I see we were typing at the same moment. You did answer in your way. But if I am not mistaken, MADSmom accused the McCain campaign of stooping down to the level of being involved with this lie. At the time of her writing, you may note that the blog is about proof of the girl's lie. Then madsmom makes her final statement. Sorry, I don't buy that she didn't have enough information.

Either way, I'm out here.

McGrunt:

I truly believe that your statement "2nd There is no way an obama supporter can write a legible B" is a personal attack on all people who support Obama as you are just as sick as your words. I am really amazed at how this year's election is showing America's true colors. As I stated previously, many of you so-called "Real Americans" do not see me or my people as Americans nor anyone else who do not support your views. Please you really need to go crawl back in that whole you call a life as you are a waste to humanity to say such things.

As a nurse I knew she was a lair because I saw that the B was backwards. What is sad about this is this reminds me of an awful horrible time in our country, were some “white women” blame the black man to ignite fear and we know from history that innocent black men were put to death on a simply story by a white woman. Its pitiful that some must resort back to such horrible tactics in gaining support for McCain and maybe diminishing support for Obama on the base of saying a black man did this to me. I think it says more about our country and have far we have yet to go. Sadden by the gesture that McCain would call such a person without finding out the facts but more so without realizing that the B was backwards. Attention to detail would have helped many before accusations started to fly.
