Did you see it?  Michael Phelps just took his 7th gold medal at the Olympics in Beijing.  He battled it out in the 100 meter butterfly, tying Mark Spitz's record of 7 gold medals at a single Olympics.  It's an historic night.   But take a close look at the slow motion replay and one has to wonder if he really did it.  The touch pad technology says Phelps beat Serbia's Cavic by .01-- it doesn't get much closer than that.

Not to take away the glory, because believe me, all of us in this newsroom, and I'm sure most of you, (if you're following these Olympic Games) are rooting for the 23 year old from Baltimore.   But many of us are also a little skeptical of that touch pad technology.

Apparently so is Cavic's coach who filed a petition questioning the times.   That protest was rejected.

No matter how you slice it, Michael Phelps is the world's best swimmer...  arguably the best swimmer in history... smashing world records right and left.  His presence makes the Games even that much more exciting (even though it's airing on our competitor's channel).

Phelps isn't done yet.  Next rush for the gold?--Sunday in the 400 medley relay.  Phelps, once again, will be swimming the butterfly leg of that race.   His time is heavily favored to win what would be his 8th gold.

I just had to post this: I just heard Phelps say: I can hardly wait to see my dog. I miss my dog!! Isn't that wonderful? To say than globally?

That's after he got the 8th. Actually, the USA team gave him his 8th. I just think it's wonderful the way he was able to provide a "team" environment. I think he would be a great speaker about energizing team thinking. Same thing as residential neighborhood team building. Even nomads can merge instantly into whereever they live and with whom they live. That's because the USA is "by the people" for real. You just have to believe it. And you have to believe YOU are an honest to goodness PERSON, NOT a Human RESOURCE.

Yes, bootsykowan... it shows how down to earth Phelps seems... and you're right... what a team player he is. Last night after getting his 8th gold, I heard him say to his teammates "I couldn't have done it without you"... and of course he couldn't... but it's still nice to see him showing appreciation to his teammates and acknowledging what a team effort this was for him to make history.

By the way, boostykowan, thank you for your nice responses in the Pelosi blog... I wanted to respond to you only because I don't like to fan the flames on those negative responses... but I do appreciate your kind words about the interview. I know she's a highly controversial and polarizing figure.. but she has broken the "marble cieling".. and having two daughters, I do appreciate that more than others might.

Anyway... hope you're enjoying your weekend. :)

I too appreciate how he gives his team members the credit they deserve when many in the media only want to interview him. I think we all know that the focus was on him to beat Spitz' record, but if I'm not mistaken, when the team did win, Bob Costas only brought Phelps in the studio for an interview. It would've been nice to bring the whole team in so that they too could get the praise and exposure since without them, Phelps wouldn't have all of the gold medals that he received.
