Beth Parker did a story tonight on Fox 5 news at 5pm about the cost of babysitting in the Washington Metro region.  She found people who say the going rate is $8 - $10/hr.  That sparked a lively conversation among us parents in the newsroom... some of whom are paying as much as $18/hr for a babysitter.

I'm curious what most of you pay out there??  We're not talking nanny wages here... but a babysitter... at night... who plays with the kids then tucks them into bed when you go out on the town.

A simple night out for a movie and a meal costs big bucks these days when you consider the sitter.  But the peace of mind is worth gold.

Man, I don't know how any of you afford to have kids at all now! In the 60's I thought I was a rich kid getting 50 cents an hour. At one family, I always hoped that Dad would get tipsy before they got home, because his wife pinched pennies, and then he'd giggle and give me a $5 tip.

When mine were little, I used to swap babysitting with my friends who had kids. It worked because we really knew each other well, and our kids thought it was fun to have friends over.

I almost had a stroke when I saw how much my daughter-in-law paid for a can of formula powder two summers ago. Goodness knows what it costs now!

In the mid-80s, I used to get paid $4-5 per hour, plus extra if the parents were late.

My two oldest daughters make around $6 or $7 an hour depending on how long they are sitting.

OMGoodness, my neighbors have some really bad kids, my daughter does overnights for them, she usually comes home with around $50 or so. They know their kids are bad and they can't find anyone else to watch them. My oldest is gone to college now, and my middle won't watch them at their house, so they bring those bad arse kids to my house.

It depends on what time I'm gone. If it's late enough that the kids are already in bed, it's usually just $20-25 for the night. If it's earlier, it's $6-7 per child per hour.

I have two lovely four-footed furry children and everyone offers to babysit for them anytime I want for my little ones for nothing. I raised my kids right and - kids will be kids - but they are always praised for their good behavior.

Maybe you guys just chose the wrong kids???

Typically, grandma or grandpa watch mine daughter, but if necessary I get one of the girls from church. Most high schools now require volunteer hours for graduation and many of the girls at our church babysit for free as a part of volunteer hours!
If I do have to pay though, I don't pay by the hour(usually), I just give the girl a flat fee depending on how long we will be gone.
