Veterans and their families have been complaining for months,  and in some cases years, about red tape; quality of care; and poor facilities at some military and V-A hospitals.  After eye opening reports by the Washington Post on conditions for outpatients at Walter Reed Army Medical Center , officials are now listening.  From Congress to the President to the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs, long overdue accountability is now being demanded.   Maryland Rep. Chris Van Hollen appeared on Fox Five Morning News today to preview an important hearing at Walter Reed.   If you know a veteran who is not being properly served, this would be a good time to send written information to your Member of Congress, as well as to the top official at the facility involved.

Ok, but who would the veterans that live in DC send a letter to? We aren't represented are we? My husband is a Vet and this story has really ticked me off because this problem has been going on for years. His brother died of agent orange and got the worlds crappiest care from the day he came back from Vietnam. Our soldiers fight to keep us safe and our leaders act like some of the most ungreatful people of our nation.

Until the War on Terror started, hardly anything was mentioned about military healthcare or the facilities that provide for the military. Since the announcement that Walter Reed was scheduled for BRAC, everybody wants to jump on the bandwagon and save this "crown jewel". Places like Bethesda Naval Station, or any facility seeing high-ranking congressional members, aren't mentioned, because we send our leaders THERE. The biggest "posers" for change are the people that have never spent time in the military, and don't know "how it is". The fact of life is, our military is STILL being treated as second class, and these band-aid cures won't change a thing. Good Luck and Godspeed for the safe return of our brave military back home.

This problem not only exists in medical/rehabilitation centers, but no matter where you go in the military. I was on an excercise to New Orleans JRB at one point in my career and we were "put up" in comdemned barracks on the base that had been deemed unfit for living due to exposed osbestos and black mold. The barracks was fenced off and locked up so no one could enter. However, after 6 hours of cleaning they "supposively" had OSHA come in and re-inspect the barracks and it was somehow deemed safe. I understand you have to do what you have to do but this problem does exist and now it is spreading to our medical/rehab centers. This is now at a whole new level. Partly to blame is poor funding and poor disbursion of funds I think. Military health care as we all know is no prized jewel but substandard is substandard no matter what the situation.

MTFs ( Military treatment Facilities) having a problem? Who knew? This problem has ALWAYS been here. It is just a new light cast on an old stone. As an Army brat and Army wife, I can say that I have been through VA Medical Centers all over and Military Hospitals from all over. These hospitals are far below the standard of cilivial hospitals. I can remember as child goign to VA's with my father because of Agent Orange and asking questains about these hospitals and getting the reply, " well these are just no frills hopsitals, baby girl..." Now that I am an Army wife I can still see the same things that lack of funds or care of up keep can cause. Maybe now that a Washington delegate has re-exposed this something will be done.

Lark:

This scandal at Walter Reed is nothing new, just speak with some of the veterans from the Vietnam War or any of the other wars that the US played a role, this is an ongoing crisis in which the buck stops at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, not some scapegoat at the general level. The US has a history of not taking good care of their veterans who laid or lay his or her life on the line for this country, just look at the surviving WW II vets who are still fighting for benefits, it is just that with this current war and the US having so many soldiers injured that this has come to light. It is sad that the US can spend billions of dollars on this war, and about to start another one with Iran but we cannot find the money to provide our injured soldiers with the proper health care without so much red tape, how sad are we as a country and why would any man, or woman want to take the chance that the military is asking today, beats me. I believe this problem could be solved easily if Halliburton gives back some of the millions of dollars it is receiving in reconstructive benefits over in Iraq as it will supplement the money needed to upgrade Walter Reed or other military facilities which were not mentioned thus far. I also believe this hospital is not the only one, it seems you do not have this problem at Bethesda Naval, maybe because it provides care to the Commander in Chief, right.

I guess my comments were not politically correct as they were deleted and I am sure it is because part of my statement included that the buck stops at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, I thought this site was for people to speak his or her mind, but when they are about the Commander in Chief, they somehow are deleted. Do not worry, as I will not post anymore because I can see this site is for people who agree with the job that is being done by him. Another part of my comments mentioned the countless monies Halliburton is receiving which was I knew would cause them to be deleted as well, as they were posted at 11:57 am today, thank you for not listening to me.

A_C_O_G:

Do not fret as this has happened on numerous occasions and I am sure the Fox5 forgives you, comments are deleted all the time but never by the anchors, it is usually others. I really appreciated reading your posts as you said what others were probably thinking but did not want to say it, way to go, because I was going to post something on the same lines but you beat me to the punch. Maybe people will really understand that the Commander in Chief is the responsible party and optimistically the people who are being replaced would get a joy out of the fact that the American public really sees they are being used as scapegoats.

I've anchored Fox Five Morning News since June 1990 and it's a privilege to try to bring you stories relevant to your lives. Every day is a new challenge, and my previous jobs were great preparation: White House correspondent for ABC News; an anchor and reporter for CBS News; an anchor and reporter for WJLA-TV; and a reporter for WPLG-TV in Miami. I have a wonderful husband and daughter, and lovable though undertrained dog.
