Did you know that  the D.C Public School system offers Universal Free Breakfast to all students?  That's right all.  From the youngest,  all the way through high school.  No sign up.  No income test.

Just show up half an hour before classes.  The Director of DC Public Schools nutrition program appeared on Fox Five Morning News today to remind parents and guardians of this valuable service.

If  you don't live in DC, do check with your local school district to find out about free and /or reduced cost programs.

The child who has a healthy breakfast is better prepared to learn.  And having that breakfast at school guarantees that child is on time.  So, no excuses.  It's a healthy and smart start to the day.

Thanks for the information!
Unfortunately here in PG County, there are many many parents that fall into the category of "don't make enough" but make "too much" for their children to get at least a reduced lunch/breakfast, much less free. I'm referring to people in actual need of the help but can't get it, not people who just want a break of some kind.

FREE breakfast in the morning, subsidized lunch at noon, dinner from “Food Stump” in the evening, not to mention FREE books, and no tuition for school - after all that there is “NO” education! What a shame! We should do something about it, don’t you agree Lark?

Although I am not a DC resident, and wouldn't qualify for free anything, I think that its wonderful that the school system is offering Free breakfast, in some cases, that's the only meal some of the kids may get.

When I was going to elementary school way back in the day; you had to sign up for free breakfast and free lunch. But it was kind of embarrasing when you did this. I would rather they start the same program up and fix the broken down schools and make sure that they have plenty of heat than to feed children who might already have plenty of food at home. But I think that this is an effort to make sure that the illegal aliens get plenty to eat also!

Nowadays, if a child doesn't have free or reduced lunch, the first comment/question seems to be "you don't get free lunch?" OUCH.

That's right- NO education. I say that for more than one reason though. Our children these days are not taught too much of anything (in more than one way)- they are taught to point and click and let the PC do the work......I have more than one issue with that. But that's another topic....

Free books- that may be true but.... some children in some DC schools don't have even have one text book for months out of the year....because there aren't enough and/or any (and then they have to hope they don't get one that is outdated). But again, that's another topic....

“news buggy”…I’d like pose a question I hope you'll share your a point of view on
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
QUESTION: is there some point at which you feel reasonable accommodation has been exceeded in the name of creating a more level playing field for the socially-economically disadvantaged ?? …high on my list of curiosities would be whether you’re disposed, or could be, to favoring family income supplement as yet another step toward evening the playing field??

(eg: say a socially-economically advantaged circumstance exists if a family’s household income for 4 is accepted at say a level not exceeding $25,000 a year and a family income of more comfortable means is considered to be at least $60,000 a year - thus to move toward evening the playing field the $25,000 a year income would be enhanced by $35,000 a year managed under a school district program)
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

that question is framed in the context of the following thoughts:

Without plausible results, school systems have added all manor of programs that’s been driven by the belief there's a measurable relationship of students who are from low income / "economically disadvantaged" backgrounds performing less acceptably than those from homes of "more comfortable means" ...it’s represented that the playing field isn’t equal to the other s’ and the theory is applied there would be less of a distinction in education performance if the playing field were evened up

Feb 28, 2007 | 7:12 PM

(continued) Now in many, many school programs meals are provided throughout the day (breakfast & lunch) founded on a belief students from underprivileged family backgrounds will gain an opportunity toward evening the playing field ...in a further step many school districts have established a pre-school program cause it’s maintained that would go towards evening up the playing field also ...many districts have went in the direction of abandoning the traditional A/B/C/D and F (failing) grading system for simply satisfactory, unsatisfactory and/or passing-not passing concept so's not to chance the "disadvantaged" suffering embarrassment and maybe even cause physiological consequences counter to accomplishing performance goals ...even a "walk-pass through" policy is practiced allowing students to graduate even though their performance was never measurably improved and that that student has achieved an optimal educational benefit …for the sake of time and space I’m gonna’ leave it at noting remedial programs during the normal school season have been created, said to aid disadvantaged, poor performers toward greater achievement

I for one can only speculate on the what the added cost has been on the expectation it would show dramatic improvement of performance of students from “socially-economically disadvantaged” backgrounds …I am convinced these experiments in the theoretical have so burdened and broadened the mission of a district’s school program, it’s diminished educational focus and even “dumbed” curriculum down from where I believe it was up into the ‘50’s …I suppo

Pkg12, right. It's SICKENING- money for a baseball stadium but no money for the NECESSITIES like education, fixing up the schools, etc.....
but irresponsibility with money seems to be a gov't prob on both state and federal levels. There always seems to be an unlimited amount of money for unnecessary BULLS**T but there is never enough for the necessities like education, health care, etc., always some reason why there's no $$ for it. SICKENING that unemployed mothers on welfare get daycare vouchers, when it's the struggling working mother who's barely making ends meet who needs it because after paying the rent and other necessities can't, or barely can, pay the babysitter. Choosing between paying the sitter who you need in order to work and survive and buying groceries you need to eat and survive is a VERY ugly choice. If you have no pot to piss in and no window to throw it out of, the gov't will help you. But if you're struggling barely making it and really trying to help yourself (not looking handouts mind you) but need a little help, and 'make too much but not enough' you are SCREWED. Lots to say on that, but that's not the blog topic so out of respect, I'll stop there. Apologies to all for digressing.

"tees", and others ...granted the circumstances you comment on surround us today even though commendable efforts have been made to make it otherwise throughout the years ...oddly some things stay the same or get even worse it seems ...

that said, I don't see the school system as any longer having to have programs of social attention piled on them ...it's gonna have to be put elsewhere ...prehaps the dept. of social services working in a new type of partenership with the school system ...but let's free up the school systems burden so they focus on things of an academic / educational nature and have social services agencies responsible for all things of a social service nature ...that's not to say school facilities can't be available for providing social services so long as their activites don't conflict with the school's education program ...it ain't gonna make funding needs evaporate but I believe each agency stands a chance of having more effective success, at least no worse

socially disadvantaged children/families have been around since the beginning of time (so to speak). when i was in the primary school grades - 1960's, they were there too. the problem with the schools is not that there are programs to help those who are considered disadvantaged, its the manner in which these programs are run, and the lack of attention to the educational preparedness of students and the lack of a requirement that PARENTS, be they single or married, participate in the educational process.
school has become a babysitting service so that many of these parents can watch soaps in some instances.
parenting in and of itself is a joke, but the state of the world has brought that to the forefront and it goes for the rich as well as the poor.
and by the way people...please stop using "have went, had went, etc" ITS "have GONE, had GONE."

I am with you tees...it’s sickening!
“irresponsibility with money seems to be a gov't prob on both state and federal levels”...I could not agree with you more!

Some thing else bothers me when it comes to D.C. We always complain about racism, which does exist by the way from one race to another, but why on this earth the D.C. govt could not take care of the Black kids? What is the excuse for that? In last twenty-five years, I have seen Berry and Tony B..sing around when it comes to the kids and their well being! Who’s fault is this?

I got to see now Fenty and his charms on our kids!

Respect pkg12, when you say "which does exist by the way from one race to another" c'mon now- you know better than that. Don't forget that racism, colorism (which is an offshoot of racism), prejudice and discrimination are different things. Too many ppl misuse that word "racism" just like they do "anti-semite" those two words are flung so loosely it's a shame. Anyway, back to what is more important here:
"why on this earth the D.C. govt could not take care of the Black kids?" I honestly believe your answer lies in the last 2 words. "What is the excuse for that?" There is none. "Who’s fault is this?" I believe your answer lies in the two names you mentioned.
Again, always can come up with money for the non-necessities, but there's never enough/is none when it comes to the things that are truly important. I'm still amazed that the U.S. gov't runs around telling everyone else how to run their countries, when it can't even clean up it's own backyard: the capitol, the seat of the federal gov't itself; White House, Congress.....!!! is a MESS!!! not to mention most streets of our country aren't safe to walk at night anymore; not safe for doors to be left unlocked anymore (no matter what area/neighborhood one lives in)

Hi tees, I’m with you again. Yes, I know better...I think after being followed by a security guard in the store would lead you to believe that! Let’s talk about racism in a separate blog. This time we will discuss, not argue with each other. I’m tired of seeing people get mad and start talking nonsense. I would talk about both - minorities and nonminorities!

Now, here is joke, kind of ...I think...

The people would pay to see the capitol, you can’t pay them to go two miles south to SE !

Yes I must agree that it is hard for children to learn while they are hungry! But I have seen some of the worst teachers in my life teaching. I sent my children to a 'supposedly' suburband great high school and that is when I noticed they fell behind in their learning. The first high school that they attended was a somewhat violent school. So I became the PTA President and I worked with the teachers and the parents at this violent inner city high school and we made it much better in only 2 years.

So when we moved out of that middle class neighborhood into a upper middle class neighborhood, I insisted that my 2 sons who attended the same inner city high school transfer to the supposedly better suburban high school. And they were very angry at me for this. But I convinced them that this high school and its school district was better and one of the best in the state of California.

I was totally wrong. For when I went to the first PTA meeting; I met my sons calculus teacher and he was a total air head. He even confessed that he hadn't taught calculus before and that he was totally inadequate; and he wondered why they even gave him that class. I was appalled and terrified.

But I thought to myself that my son was an A student in Trigonomety so he couldn't do but so bad in his calculus class since all he needed was books. I was totally wrong again!! In 2 years of those bad math and english teachers; both my sons fell behind and never caught up until they went to college and by then they struggled because that supposedly superior education system and suburban school syst

oh my I have got to stop this ranting and ravening and rambling. . . .system failed them miserably and the damage was already done And they struggled when they got to college and had to catch up from being past honor roll students in their inner city public school; to being mediocre students in this great and advanced suburban school. A high school that also had bad racial problems because of the influx of Asian students who raided the whole region with violence; and changed the whole environment socially and educationally because many of them couldn't speak proper English.

OH MY!! DON'T YOU JUST LOVE OUR SOCIAL ENGINEERING New World Order; and how they have ruined our public school system and are now demanding that parents now home school their children so that they can get their evil and anti-god and antichrist hands on them!!??
