There's hopeful news this week from the American Cancer Society. For the second year in a row cancer deaths have declined. The society calls this historic.
But amid this truly wonderful news, there are still troubling disparities. Blacks are more still more likely to get cancer, and more likely to die. A timely phone call from a public relations contact pointed out that this month is Cervical Health Awareness Month. And there are new efforts to inform women about preventing cervical cancer.
One new education campaign reaching out to African American women is the Balm in Gilead's Isis Project. As the campaign slogan says, Spread the Word: Save a Sister.

I've anchored Fox Five Morning News since June 1990 and it's a privilege to try to bring you stories relevant to your lives. Every day is a new challenge, and my previous jobs were great preparation: White House correspondent for ABC News; an anchor and reporter for CBS News; an anchor and reporter for WJLA-TV; and a reporter for WPLG-TV in Miami. I have a wonderful husband and daughter, and lovable though undertrained dog.
