What Makes A Criminal

A reposting of several articles on the subject from various sources.

Hoping to shed light on a question brought up on another blog.

Is It Genetic

Genetics is the most argued point of criminology today. Some believe that genetics cause people to commit crimes. Geneticists have researched to find out if a certain chromosome combination will automatically make you a criminal or not. If this is true you could see even before your child was born if it would be a criminal in society. These studies proved very successful. Here are some outcomes of the geneticist and their lab studies:

One of the most used theories of why criminals commit crimes is the person's ability to commit crime is pre-determined. If that is so criminals have no choice of what they do. Some of the genetic abnormalities that would make someone pre-determined would be the XYY chromosomal structure (Not effective in women, just men). A chromosomal test in prisons had an outcome of 27Y, which means most of the prisoners had that many Y chromosomes. This is a chemical imbalance caused either from genetics.

These theories have been tested on people in prison and have seem to have a high outcome. The "criminal disease" could be caused by a recessive gene passed down from one or either both of the parents. This means if it is recessive in a female that both parents must give 2 recessive genes to get that disease. That is why you rarely see woman criminals in our society. If the parents give the recessive gene to the male offspring the male automatically has the disease since he does not have another X chromosome to have another dominant chromosome to over write the disease. Therefore a person may carry the disease and it may not show for many generations and suddenly show up in someone. You can never tell unless you study the genes and DNA very closely.

When examining the DNA of a person the geneticist has to search for very small errors in the code. Some examples of this would be broken parts off of some chromosomes or even less or more than normal chromosomes. In the future geneticists might be able to view your offspring's chromosomes and might be able to alter the genes to make the person(s) normal. With the help of genetic engineering it is possible to make a child with certain traits depending what traits the parents have. They can make the child normal normal and not have any genetic disorders. This might reduce crime rate in the world and make things safer. This process takes time and money, but in the future there will be cheaper and faster ways of doing this as is with all technology.

Does the Enviroment Control Crime?  If genetics doesn't control crime what does? Most of the criminologists today still believe the same thing that was thought when we first started to look into crime. It's the environment and nothing else. Genetics has no play, because if you are never introduced to a life of crime you won’t know what crime is, and won’t be able to commit crime, but if you grow up in a house of crime they are going to comment crime due to the fact that all they know is crime and won’t be able to do anything but that. If this is the case we need to see that the only way to curb this is to give education to parents and stop crime before it starts, to do this please read Warning Signs of Crime below. Now, of course there are things that are in defense of the environment theory, this being that most criminals do grow up in a broken or deviant household, but then again some don't. Most of the criminals did start at an early age thus showing that they had the desire to comment crime, which is most likely produced by the environment or peer pressure. That brings me to the next theory that they have. it is influenced by the children that they hang around. Do these children affect the way we think what we do, how we do it and why? The answer that most studies conclude is that of yes it does affect the way we act, but in 99% of the studies done to this day it only works in boys not in girls.  That is then consistant with the genetic theory. Still today the scientist are trying to figure out why this is and how to find out if there is a way to curb it in them. Current government funding is limiting the amount of money that the scientist get, thus we need more funding in order to find the solution to crime throughout the world. Currently the only thing that is solving problems is education and finding good homes for these kids to live in, if this is helping that does conclude that the environment has some play in the affects of crime. Warning Signs of Crime How can you tell if your child is going to be a criminal?

There are several things that you can look for in your child to tell if they are headed for a life of crime
 They are:

·         If prior to the age of twelve your child has deviant behavior. ·         Prior to age 12 your child has a tendency to argue, or show violence toward other children. ·         As a child your adolescent is anti-social and has a tendency to avoid adults. ·         If your child experiences defiance toward authorities in school, or towards parents ·         If you see sudden changes in his behavior frequently over the adolescent's years ·         Always remember, small crimes are just the beginning, ignore them now and your child will be headed for a life of crime ·         A study conducted by Emory University in Atlanta, the University of Southern California and the Institute of Preventive Medicine in Denmark discovered that that more than 25% of males that mothers had smoked when they were pregnant with them had been arrested for performing a violent crime.

Review of items that may lead to crime:

·         Genetic abnormalities

·         Start at an early age

·         Peer pressure (to perform)

·         Anti-social behavior

·         A broken or deviant household

·         Influenced by the (copy acts of) children that they hang around

·         Changes in behavior

·         Begins with small crimes

·         Smoking during pregnancy

When it comes to criminals, honestly there are no two alike. Most of the time it is just having lived a very hard existence from early childhood on that leads most criminals to the life they have. They don't have the mental tools to make sound choices, they are most likely addicted to drugs and or alcohol, they are likely victims of crime and abuse themselves, the list goes on.

When a person is raised in those circumstances it's not hard for them to cross the line of what is moral and what is not. I think a person’s conscience ability to determine between right and wrong is innate, but if it is constantly being subjected to negativity it will eventually just deflate and the alpha gene will just take over... fight or flight if you will. You asked about murder.... most murders are committed by someone the victim knew... and are considered a crime of passion, which is totally different from stranger to stranger murder.

There are several books written by a criminal profiler by the name of Dayle Heneman, I think you would find her work fascinating, give it a try. However, most serial killers, and many other criminals tend to have suffered from severe bipolar ODD and ADHD as young children. They were difficult to deal with, often violent and self-absorbed with their own feelings or lack thereof. Most serial killers are diagnoses with Anti-social personality disorder, a mental disorder that leaves it’s suffer with no concept of guilt, compassion, or remorse for anyone else.

When brains scans are done on many or even most of these people, they are found to have inadequate activity in certain regions of the brain, primarily the ones responsible for self-restraint and impulse control.

On September 10th I purchased an online gift certificate from the Golden Orchid Spa and Salon website in the amount of $75.00.
This was to be a gift for my wife's birthday.

On September 22nd I received an email time stamped for 7:50 pm from the Golden Orchid which stated that the business would be going (and had gone) out of business on the 22nd, there was no mention of how outstanding gift certificates would be handled.

This is that email...

Dear Friends,

Since opening the Golden Orchid 6 years ago, I have been overwhelmed by the people who have touched my life in ways you can't even imagine. I have been surrounded by a team of talented people. I have made many friends and have been grateful for every person who has walked into the Golden Orchid to enjoy an experience with us. We have shared laughter and tears, joy and loss, but now it is time for me to pass the torch to one of my valued team.

As of September 22, the Golden Orchid is closing and I am pleased to announce that Daisy Price, who has worked at the Golden Orchid for almost 2 years, will be re-opening immediately as Daisy's - A Salon & Body Boutique.

Daisy hopes to retain the entire Golden Orchid staff that you have grown to love, so I encourage you to please continue to support my staff and keep coming to 14 N East Street. October is the month to vote for your favorite salon, spa and nail salon in Frederick Magazine's Frederick's Best voting edition. It is my hope that you will take the time to go on-line and complete the survey in support of your service provider and the new Daisy's Salon. No matter what the name is on the door or the logo on the sign, my staff is what made the Golden Orchid number 1 and they will always be number 1 to me.

If you have an appointment on the schedule, there is no reason to change it. If there are any unforeseen complications, you will be contacted. To make this easier for our guests, the phone numbers will remain the same so call any time. Her new web address will be
www.daisyssalononline.com effective October 1, 2008.

Daisy has some changes planned that will hopefully further enhance your experience. I know she welcomes your feedback and we can always use some encouragement so please reach out to her.

Thank you all for 6 amazing years! I wish each of you happiness and peace and hope that you will stop and say hi if you see me out and about.

Thanks for everything!

All the best,

Yvette Shirey
Golden Orchid Salon & Spa

I called the phone number of the business location the next day and was informed that the Golden Orchid had as of September 22nd become Daisys Salon. Which is what it said in the email...

The people there had no idea as to what was to happen with the gift certificates, as the details of the transfer of the business had not been settled.

I emailed the owner of the Golden orchid but that has been unanswered.
On October 3rd after several more phone calls I was finally informed that the owner of Golden Orchid had updated the website with the information I was looking for.

The new information states that the gift certificates will not be honored or refunded!

Here is the webpage copy...

Dear Friends,
I am sad to announce that after six years serving the Frederick area, Golden Orchid Salon and Spa closed its doors on Monday September 22, 2008. My former employee Daisy Price has opened a new salon and spa at our former location. While many of my former staff are employed by Daisy, this new business is unrelated in any way to the Golden Orchid.

The Golden Orchid was my life. I gave a lot personally to sustain it and even more to close it. My final goal in the transition was to try to ensure my staff had jobs and my clients had a place to continue to go for services they have grown to love.

Due to contractual obligations, I am unable to discuss the specifics of the deal but want people to know that I am sad to say that I was unable to arrange for the transfer of gift card obligations and unfortunately, the financial situation of Golden Orchid was such that there are no funds in excess of outstanding tax liabilities and debts to provide refunds. While I know that many will be upset by these developments, please be assured that I have not personally profited from these events.

The Golden Orchid was a business â€" not a person. I spent 6 years giving to the community and earning the reputation I had. It is my hope that people will try to understand that I am still the same person I have always been and that there must be circumstances beyond my control that brought us to today.

I truly regret that I was unable to remain in business and honor these obligations.

Sincerely,

Yvette Shirey

As of October 8th 2008 the website where I purchased the gift certificate is still up and offering to sell Golden Orchid Gift Certificates.

https://gospa.boomtime.com/lgift

There is nothing on the site to warn that the Golden Orchid has gone out of business. The site worked as before right up to the second verification page, from which when you hit submit your credit card is charged for a minimum of $25.00. I did not hit submit to see if it then warned of the closure as I didnot want to risk another 25 bucks.

I have also contacted the parent company of the BoomTime website asking them to look into the matter of apparent continued access to the gospa site and possible continueing sales online.

Another item of concern is the fact that the gospa.boomtime site saves your credit card info. What will happen to that information now?
