I've heard all the latest news and reports about the recent metro bus accidents and fatalities and the problem can be blamed on both drivers and pedestriciana; though I believe bus drivers should be more careful of their surroundings when driving that big machine. The problem could be averted all together if the DC traffic (light) management (DPW) got involved and used some common sense and creativity. The problem I see as a pedestrian is that when I have the OK walk sign to cross the street, drivers going in the same direction or coming from the opposite direction as pedestrians are attempting to make turns into the cross walk to go either left or right. Oftentimes, by trying to make turns and being in a hurry to make the light, drivers oftentimes come close to hitting pedestrians. The solution would be for DPW to halt/stop vehicle traffic flow in all directions and allow pedestrians a time limit of 35 seconds to cross the street. After that time expires, normal traffic flow could then begin again. DPW will have to decide which side goes first, etc. This would significantly cut down on accidents and traffic fatalities.
