So the family of DeOnte Rawlings (The 14 year old boy that was shot and killed by 2 OFF DUTY police officers) are suing the police department for wrongful death. Now don't get me wrong. I am normally the ones that stand up for the police. And will continue to do so. But I also admit that there are some bad apples. And the 2 OFF DUTY police officers invloved in this are 2 of the bad apples. So I believe that the family has a good case. I just think that they are suing the wrong people. These police officers were off duty. So how can the police department be held accountable for the off duty officers actions? Plus, that isn't making anyone suffer except the residents of DC. Because whatever amount is ordered to pay, comes out of our tax dollars. So the wrong people are getting punished. You would think that this family would want the right people punished correct? Then sue the officers that did that for all that they are worth and then some. Don't punish us for their actions.

The DC government has deeper pockets than 2 police officers.

I do not know what to think of this lawsuit, as the family seems to have a right to sue given that the police did shoot the child in the back of the head, but asking for $100M from an already financial stressed police department is a little much. The police cannot afford their own crime lab, use storage bins for evidence warehouses, and vehicles that are outdated or simply broken, so where in the hell should the money come from to satisfy this lawsuit? The sad case is just as you stated, the monies will come from the taxpayers, in which, I hope and pray the family realizes, it will be their money also. Anyway, I am in agreement with you that it should not be the police department, and will even take it further, it should not be the DC government either, as Congress runs the District, so sue the pants off the ones who are stealing our money anyway, make Congress pay for this injustice.

They will offer the family the standard 8,000 dollar amount to settle, and believe me, the family will take it. This is the standard amount offered when the department gets sued. Those people have never seen eight thousand in their lives. It works every time.

Have the officers been convicted of a crime yet? Did I miss an indictment? Who has confirmed they are bad apples? Officers cannot be sued individually unless they have been convicted of a crime or faced severe disciplinary action for negligence first.

Another thing. Getting shot in the back means nothing. If a suspect shoots at you, then turns to run away, or is actively running away from you, you can unload your entire magazine into their back. Perfectly acceptable and within protocols.

"Officers cannot be sued individually unless they have been convicted of a crime or faced severe disciplinary action for negligence first."

Well thats kind of stupid. They were off duty. So how is that the departments responsibility? So if while they are off duty and get into a car accident and kill someone else, thats the department's responsibility too?

Ex-MPD, you have seen me blogging for over a year now. You have seen my views and how I am constantly defending cops. There is just something fishy here to me. Because it seems like this officer got royally ticked off because his property was stolen and just lost it. And in a way, I can see why. These cops work day in and day out putting their lives on the line for people. And there isn't that many people that show their greatfulness to them for it. And then one of those people go and steal their things. I am not saying that it makes it ok. I am just saying I can see why

Hey Kelly, I know you are generally pro-cop. I thought maybe you knew something I didn't. Maybe it's fishy, maybe it's not, I wasn't there. I will say this, I will back up any police officer over ANY resident of Condon Terrace. The car crash thing doesn't work because a cop in a car crash off duty is not taking police action. Therefore the department has no say in what happens. The off duty cops that killed DE-ONE-TAY were taking "police action".

I hear you talk about the money and tax payers. But, do you think that family is worried about somebody paying taxes. THEY WOULD PAY ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD TO HAVE THEIR SON BACK. MONEY ISNT EVERYTHING. LIFE IS MORE IMPORTANT.

If you understood or even bothered to read my blog correctly babybaby, I was not B**ching about them filing a lawsuit. I was simply saying that they were going after the wrong people. How is filing a lawsuit against the police department going to hurt the people that did this to that young man? Its not. Honestly, they are showing that they are in it for the money at this point. Because if they weren't, they would be filing the lost suit against the people that did it. And not making innocent people pay for it.
