Being a black male born and raised in the Washington DC area there are a lot of things that play a role in crime in this city but the number one reason most crimes go unsolved I believe is the definition of SNITCHING or being labeled a SNITCH.

We recently had a conversation in the barber shop with some young men and I brought up this topic.  I asked one of the young men what he considered a snitch and his definition was so vague that anyone in the barber shop could have fit the description.

I asked them if they were sitting on a friends porch minding their business and a car came speeding around the corner and there was a child crossing the street and he hit the child and kept going and you saw the tag number would you tell.  His response was “No, cuz I ain’t no snitch”.

Amazed I continued… even though I knew that the next questions had no chance but I asked it anyway.

So if you and some friends robbed a store or a bank and on your way out a woman parking her car saw you and wrote down the tag number and told the police what is she?  Of course his answer was the same “man that B is a snitch and she should have minded her own business” was his friend response which seemed to draw high fives and a few giggles.

Okay if you are selling drugs in front of someone’s home and they call the police.  You guessed it again they consider that a snitch.

So I asked them one final question before I gave my definition

So if some shot, robbed, rapped, or murdered a family member and there were people who saw this crime take place and all your family member was doing was walking home from work minding their business would you want someone who saw the incident to come forward?  Not a word and that’s when it was very clear to me that these young men thought they knew what a snitch was.  I am from the same streets they are from and they are aware of this so I wasn’t worried about them thinking I was a snitch.  Some of these young guys looked up to me growing up so I know they will at least listen to what I am saying.

This is what I told them I considered being a snitch.

If 4 people are in a car and they are out to commit a crime rather it be a misdemeanor or a felony crime and upon getting caught or getting away 1 of them 4 decides to tell… that is a snitch.

Someone who agreed to be involved but decided to tell to save their own…. that is a snitch.

Someone who decided to sell drugs and upon getting caught tells on the person that gave him the drugs… that is a snitch

Law abiding citizens out to live and make a better way and witness a crime and decides to come forth does not give them the label of a snitch.  We argued for a bit but at the end most of the young men agreed that they did look anyone that gave information as a snitched but openly admitted that they do see a difference.  So it made me think what else do they think they know that they really don’t have a clue.  No of course I advised the young men to try to live a better life but that is a different topic.

Here is an on-line dictionary definition:
snitch (snch) Slang
v. snitched, snitch·ing, snitch·es
v.tr.
To steal (something, usually something of little value); pilfer. See Synonyms at steal.
To turn informer: He snitched on his comrades.
n.
1. A thief.
2. An informer.

To snitch or not to snitch, this is a no brainer as far as I am concerned. The laws, like them or not, are for EVERYONE. Those that break those laws, in a civilized society, should be held accountable for their actions for breaking them. To be aware of, or have knowledge of a person or persons that broke those laws and not come forward makes you a MAJOR part of the problem, and also an accessory after the fact. And you should be thrown in with the people that committed the crimes in the first place. And I feel you should be held just as accountable. My opinion, and yes, I know what they say about opinions.

Perhaps we could get along with less snitches/witnesses if he had a few more vigilantes.

we can only hope that a family member of the "I'll never snitch" crowd gets killed and the witnesses don't snitch. Those idiots with no understanding of morality should suffer the loss without closure .

JayMillionaire (so am I)..... Your quotes:

1."Someone who decided to sell drugs and upon getting caught tells on the person that gave him the drugs… that is a snitch"

2. "So if some one shot, robbed, rapped, or murdered a family member and there were people who saw this crime take place and all your family member was doing was walking home from work minding their business would you want someone who saw the incident to come forward? Not a word and that’s when it was very clear to me that these young men thought they knew what a snitch was. "

What ? ???? Come again???? As a black american MALE, I am appalled AT THESE retarded statements made by these retards!!!!!!!!!! MAKES ME WANT TO PUKE!!

When that lock sound shuts behind "THESE GUYS", who are quoting your statements , I will ,absolutely, have no sympathy for them!!! For I have met the devil and he laughs at these pathetic excuses (and i have ALSO beaten him several times). But unlike you JayMillionaire, he knows the mind of these men, who take the views you submitted. For they have weak souls...

Clear man , It could have been your wife "'RAPED UNMERCIFULLY or YOUR DAUGHTER"! Have you thought for a second about that SIR???? Let GOD and the DEVIL decide the out come of these retards(THE SNITCH AND THOSE WHO RUN WITH THE SNITCH!!!!) I HAVE met both(DEVIL AND GOD)..... and TRUST ME, they will BOTH give these misguided individuals what they truly deserve. It's not about the snitch ,it's about WHAT YOU ....

When people run with guys, who run with the devil, they are going to get what's coming! NO EXCUS

Snitch, rat, fink, tattletale, informant are all common adjectives that describe one thing only, it is the definition of someone who does the right thing, for what ever reason.Be it a mafioso rolling over on his pisans for a lighter sentence,or a kid in school who saw someone STEAL another's lunch money. To suggest that there is an exception to the rule in any criminal matter is to say YOU ARE A CRIMINAL! Only someone who has been in a criminal environment would take exception, and justify or sanction, condone any exception to doing the right thing and or JUSTICE!Done any time JAY? That's what I'm Thinkin?

Hello JayMillionaire,

Interesting blog on what really is a snitch. Do you think the “snitch” only resonates in the Black culture or is it related to economic status or education? Or is it a simple platform that some Blacks have little respect for the judicial system and law enforcement officers; that some Blacks reject giving the common courtesy or respect of helping such individuals? I work in the judicial system and I think it is a means of self-perseveration. I do not agree with the snitch theory because I think each citizen has a responsibility in making our society safe and that comes about in reporting crime and having the fortitude to be a witness. No fortitude is needed to simply turn a blind eye to crime until it hits home.

Hey Jay,

You've made some very important points in your post... that I think, should be thought to every individual who has the wrong concept of who a Snitch really is. I also enjoyed the part where you use the individual as an example; and is emediate reaction to your question was silent. A lot of people don't consider themselves Snitches, unless he/she are on the recieving end of the crime thats being committed.
