LA is buzzing .... it's game one of the Lakers - Spurs series at the Staples Center. Meanwhile, directly across the street at the Nokia Theater... a new American Idol is about to be crowned!!! Gridlock aside..  is there any better place on the face of this Earth to be??

I can honestly tell you that I can't remember the last time there was this much excitement surrounding a final. And that's probably because, we literally do not know who is going to win. I know Archuleta brought the house down last night and if you base it on Tuesday night's performances alone, he should and would win. But that's the thing.... American Idol voting is way more convaluted than that.

Vegas odds did a 180 between yesterday and today. Tuesday... Cook was the overwhelming favorite. Wednesday... David A. is the odds on favorite by a pretty good margin. And I will tell you, most people we talked to out here today said little David should take the title.

But Dial-Idol.com (the website that measures busy signals) says Cook will win hands down. Plus there is conspiracy talk that because Simon was so harsh against Cook, fans went out of their way to vote multiple times. Plus, one other article I read said... Cook will win because Idol needs him to win... because he will sell records more than Archuleta and Idol needs a bonafide star to win (ie not another Taylor Hicks)

So what do you think?

Also... I got word on finale stars performing tonight.... George Michael, Seal, Mike Myers, Carrie Underwood, Bryan Adams, ZZ top, the Jonas Brothers, Jordin Sparks.... just to name a few.

Who would you like to see perform tonight? The all time best for me, remains to be Prince during the Season 5 finale. In my opinion, that would be hard to top.

Proof that all it takes is an interesting Top 2 (David vs. David) and no idea who is going to win to make an exciting finale. Seasons 5 and 6 had very obvious outcomes and odd couple Top 2s, so there was no edge-of-your-seat anticipation of the results.

Prince's performance was the final straw in the absolute worst finale ever. A totally one-sided contest between two very mismatched finalists, and worst of all, the judges were kept silent and in the background like furniture for the entire two hours. I am a huge Simon fan, and I want him to get as much camera and mike time as possible. Just when Ryan said that there would be no more guest appearances, and I heaved a sigh of relief hoping that NOW Ryan would go to the judges, my hopes were dashed when out walked Prince. His performance was completely forgettable, and did nothing to enhance the show. The only welcome guest performers are the ones who perform with the Idols, since the Idols, the judges, and Ryan are the stars and all the star power the show needs. If I had my way, they would go back to Season 2, the best finale ever, and do away with the big name performances; just focus on the Idol cast. Simon and Paula's kiss sketch was THE best finale moment ever, and I want to see them do something else like it (we were teased that there could be a sequel, but it didn't happen).
