Last Sunday I had what some would say is a prime assignment. I was sent to FedEx field to cover tailgating. Now, the fact it was the Redskins - Cowboys game means tailgating (already an art form among Skins fans) would be the ultimate fan experience.

Beef tenderloin, homemade chili, beer, crab dip, chocolate brownies, beer, wings, shrimp,... and did I mention beer? Needless to say, fans pulled out all the stops. The spirit and the spirits were flowing!

But what made this particular day of tailgating such a big deal... was not the fact that the Skins were playing their arch rival. It was that Fox's own Rachael Ray was coming to tailgate along with the fans! That's right, one of the country's most popular and perkiest cooking gurus was going to be sharing and tasting! (and shooting footage for one of her upcoming shows)

When fans heard Rachael Ray was going to be there, they went nuts! They were so excited they couldn't stand it! They made sure all their goodies and grub wasn't gobbled up before she got there. They had their camera phones in hand ready to capture the moment.

And so when she did get there????..... I have to tell you she seemed less than thrilled to be there. Now, in her defense, she had flown a red eye in from LA to New York and then caught a plane from New York to DC. So I am sure she was very tired. Once she got going, she did mingle with the fans and try a few dishes. In all honesty, I think she was kind of overwhelmed at how serious skins fans are about their tailgating and told her producer, after about, 15 minutes, she was ready to go.

So why am I telling you this? Not to change your opinion about Rachael Ray. We all have bad days. And I do think she is great at what she does (I have one or her cookbooks myself) But if you saw the Country Music Awards last night... then you saw Faith Hill's reaction to Carrie Underwood winning Female Vocalist of the Year (and Faith not). It was less than flattering. In fact, it made her look like a total diva bitter at the young up and coming star. Now prior to seeing that, I adored Faith Hill.

So with the Faith fiasco so closely following my time with Rachael Ray... I started thinking....
are celebrities really who we think they are?
Is their public image.. simply an image?
How much responsibility do they have in keeping with the image that has earned them so much popularity?
Are our expectations too high when it comes to celebrities?
Aren't they just real people too... they have bad days, tired days, days when they are disappointed, days when they get angry because they didn't get something they feel like they deserved?

Let me know what you think!

I don't think they are any better than us. The only difference is their money. To be honest most of them don't deserve what they are being paid. We have REAL PEOPLE out here that deserve a lot more that what they are being paid. Teachers for one!! They make way to much, and alot don't even give back. Who needs 10 cars. You can only drive one at a time. Stop showing off. I guess I need to stop hating.

Their image is just that an image. Don't put on this front in front of the cameras and then when the camera is off you are different. Yea, we all do it, act differently in different situations, but some go to the extreme. (I won't mention who, but I had a very nasty experience with a well know star at an event I coordinated.Totally different from what you see. Man was this person nasty.)

I do think at times our expectations are to high, but it goes back to what I just said. They portray themselves one way and when and if you are able to meet them, they are totally different. Not all, I won't say even most. but some of them do.

Yea they are real people, but when you come to a game, especially one as big as the Skins and the Cowboys, oh no you need to be at your best. Fake the funk as they use to say. If you are and actor, you know how to do. You have to remember your fans can make and break you.

And for the award. GET OVER IT FAITH. There is always next year. we can't win them all.

And Holley I think you are great. I saw you at one of your events and off camera you were just as you were on. Just as sweet as can be. You are a great asset to

It didn't get all of my blog. I was saying you are a great asset to the "News" world and we are proud to have you as a part of our household in the morning. Keep up the good work.

Of course celebrities are real people too and have their off days just like everyone else. That being said... the fact of the matter is that they ARE celebrities. I adore RR, think she's great, sorry that she had a long flight, however, she knew she was coming down here to do a segment for her show. I believe she's gets paid to do stuff like that. Sorry she was tired, but I still have to go to work and do my job just as well after a long night and no sleep as when I have a great night's sleep. She presents herself as the All American girl, I'm sure all the fans at that game were expecting her to be the same at the tailgating parties as they see her on her show. I believe that as a celebrity, she has a responsibility to her fans to be who she projects herself to be.

As far as the Faith Hill incident goes, that's very disappointing! FH appears to her fans to be a down to earth, approachable person. To act like a diva and get pissed that she didn't win an award is totally unprofessional. It reminds me of Nancy Kerrigan's little hissy fit when she didn't win Olympic gold and had to "make nice" with a sweet little girl who was (oh my gosh) better than Nancy. NK had America's hearts after Tonya Harding's goon hit her in the leg, but I lost all respect for her after she showed her true colors.

Why that totally sucked!...I'm sure the fans took extra effort with their cooking to make things right and I think she could have made the same effort. Red-Eye...sleep on the plane. She knew the assignment was coming up. How crass! Let's see how she'll pretty it up for TV. Personally, I like her show, and I'll give her the benefit of the doubt for now. Holly, you are the greatest! I love you girl. You rock!

Celebs are just people -- they just happen to get air time. We think we get to know them because we see them all the time on TV or on the big screen, but they're just characters in front of the camera. When they're out of character and in events (e.g., red carpet gala-type things) they play for the camera. We have absolutely no idea what these people are like when the cameras are off.

And the same goes for our local news people, right Holly? ;)

I also heard about this and as I read further came across this statement from Faith Hill's manager
"Her manager claims she was just joking around. In a statement, Miss Hill tells TMZ, "The idea that I would act disrespectful towards a fellow musician is unimaginable to me. For this to become a focus of attention given the talent gathered is utterly ridiculous. Carrie is a talented and deserving Female Vocalist of The Year." Take it for what it's worth.

We have many different faces that we put on to suit whatever situation we are in. Our demeanor a business meeting or in the workplace is much more serious and formal than our demeanor at Superbowl party with our friends. This is due the difference in social and professional lives.

I'm sure all of us have had days when we would l.o.v.e to tell a co-worker or a client to "go to hell" (among other things), but we don't. I'm sure many of us have had bad days at work, but we try to bite the bullet and put on our business face because that's what a professional does.

Rachel Ray was at that game, not as "Rachel Ray, average citizen". She was there as "Rachel Ray, tv personality and cook". In other words, she was there in a professional capacity. She should have bit the bullet and behaved like a professional, imo. Faith Hill...same thing: bite the bullet and behave like a professional. The CMA awards is the equivalent of attending job-related convention: you're there on a professional level.

I recently saw a PBS show called "Think Tank". The guest was Judith Martin, AKA Miss Manners. She made an interesting observation about this:

"This is part of the casualization, the
phoniness of the business world. We’re not really doing
business here; we’re really at leisure, we’re all friends,
we celebrate one another’s birthday... "
