Brian Bolter's Blog

Like a lead pipe to the shins of presumptive Presidential nominee John McCain (R), the New York Times just did a real Tonya Harding on the longtime Senator. I could almost see the elder statesman stumbling around his campaign headquarters before the story broke last night wailing to no-one in particular ... "Why? Whhhhhhyyyyyyy?"

Flash to the New York Times editorial board meeting where mock glum marked the faces of the decision makers, a lot of 'tsk tsk-ing' to each other with knowing glances they HAD to run a thinly sourced insinuation piece selling a 9 year old story wrapped in 8 year old sexual overtones.

I can't tell who's more arrogant and sleazy. A lifelong politician who barely escaped the Keating 5 scandal, only to clumsily straddle the line of impropriety and indignation for decades. A man who turns righteous on 'soft money' corporate contributions, but rides their jets, vacations at their homes and if you believe the New York Times ... whispers sweet nothings in the ears of their lobbyist.

Or, a former fixture of the journalism altar. Kneeled at and blindly trusted by millions of Americans. Only to be humiliated and ripped naked of its luster by former employees and trusted journalists Judith Miller and Jayson Blair. A newspaper that apparently just figured out sex sells ... even dusty old stories of 'business as usual' on Capitol Hill.

Ultimately, I'm equally offended by both John McCain and the New York Times. To me, the real story in this 'expose' is two-thirds of the way down. Burying the lead if you will. The two letters sent by John McCain in 1999 on behalf of his "friend" Ms. Iseman and her employer Paxson Communications to the FCC. Drawing a 'rare rebuke by the chairman' for its impropriety. McCain doesn't deny it. Iseman doesn't deny it. The FCC doesn't deny it. It's a crystal clear example of a powerful politician trading on the reputation as a maverick ... playing that same old sleazy political game of wielding influence for "friends" and by logic, personal gain. But the New York Times shrouds the story is some weak, anonymous smut to interject unneeded salaciousness and therefore ITSELF in the story.

Will John McCain find redemption and accolades in the court of public opinion ala Nancy Kerrigan. Doubt it. His saintly image has been tarnished and through his actions with the FCC ... rightly so. But the New York Times just got a lot closer to a sad, out of shape and bitter opponent ala Tonya Harding. Slinging mud as a wild, winded boxer desperate to land a punch and prove its self worth.

…on the Repub side ya have McCain followed by Huckabee (not gonna get there) and behind him Ron Paul (an even a darker horse than Huckabee)…
…on the Dem side ya have Obama standing and Hillary barely (not that it pains me) and to the credit of the ‘left balance’ of the party’ we’ll be presented with Obama as their candidate…
…so as the picture now appears we’ll emerge with Obama and McCain running for the presidency …and the picture I’m getting’ is you consider McCain undeserving of your respect and admiration and in an indirect way would like to impress us with taking an eye to the Obama ticket …to that end though throwin’ in your contribution of charges to strengthen the Times and Post articles Brian, sharing your disdain with us for McCain’s record …tell us it wouldn’t be a safer bet to expect you’re attracted to Obama than the likelihood you’re goin’ for McCain …
…So were you really so torn up by the Times revlation, as you put it arrogant and sleazy ...as if picking the “untested” guy with a shallow suit of experience to guide him in leading us is the choice??? …the guy who deceived everyone of his real intentions and plan …a former State legislator comes to DC as a freshman congressman and when it’s all said and done come November will have devoted about 25% of his time to congressional duties and responsibilities he was asked to manage …I’m supposed to look at the metal and character McCain demonstrated during his military career and pass on that being an influence on our decision of who should be chosen as our nation’s COMMANDER IN CHIEF …the way I look at it pe

(contd) - people can expect Obama flexing his strong suit using his shallow range of experience on domestic policy and programs…when I think of Obama’s standing on the world diplomatic front I imagine what other world leaders see and I see somebody with an excellent, toothy smile, charm and nothing else to offer except BS …on top of it all I’m supposed to feel abundantly confident of Obama’s background enabling him to be a savvy, competent COMMANDER IN CHIEF …you're gonna have to more covincing than this Brian...

Arrogant perhaps... but educated. Sorry Brian, I can't agree with you on this one. I live with an educated and sometimes quite arrogant man like most men that I know. It feels like home to me. ;o)

NYT

It's funny, I hadn't seen one negative press report on Obama... not one. This guy is squeaky clean... It's just amazing. Even when Larry Sinclair made his accusations about Obama... the MSM didn't even run the story.

Hey Brian... Is that an I Love Obama pin under you jacket?

The other thing that's strange is that Fox News (Cable News) typically has more of a Republican slant on their "Fair and Balanced" version of the news... but MyFoxDC seems exactly the opposite... favoring the democratic and minority slant on the news. Is it the demographic?

Sometimes I think you guys should change your name to MyNYTDC.... By the way... when you guy's report that "Some people say..." who exactly are those people?

LOL....that's why I didn't bother commenting on the NYT's question.

…squeaky clean is right "illusion" ...there’s little of anything else to demonstrate confidence in so they mask what little he has to offer with illusions (no pun intended) of great things to come and deliver that line in an evangelical style anticipating you can make a more convincing case than the other candidate …notable to is your thoughts of (FOX) network vs. local political line …they’ve left a confusing sense with me also…nationally FOX seems to balance reporting on the political process but on the local scene I get the impression 5 is promoting, in as subtle a way as possible, a leaning toward Obama…

…I remarked several months ago McCain wasn’t my preference but if left with a choice of him measured against the Dems I’m left with no faith in ether of the Dem candidates …that’s what task we’re left …if logic holds that the counseled direction to rely on in life is following someone with experience vs less experienced only a fool follows the odds a lightweight offers …the lightweight is yet learning what the knowledgeable and experienced choice has to offer…

…if you’re you looking to have your investments managed to the best possible end you gravitate toward who has the greatest experience in the field not a fledging …a trip can spell disaster …this is the decision everyone has to weigh as November approaches and we select who’s gonna take the helm …going with the candidate offering a lighter suit of character and experience isn’t the lesson I’ve gained…

It's almost like the media is trying to "Taint" the American Voters opinion of McCain huh?

Give me a break Brian...you should know the media will not treat a republican with any respect.

BINGO priveye!!
Dead on target.

Would most of us here expect anything less of the liberal media? That is why I did not bother to post when Brian posted this originally. Whether you like or dislike McCain, they, the liberal AH media, have already judged and convicted him, and they don't GAF whether it is true or not.

Gosh you guys, I lived through a whole year of the Presidency where the President was spied on in the White House by Republicans. I think that was a sting operation to hide the doings of Skull&Bones myself. How quickly you forget that it was Bush numbSkull&Boneheads vs. Kerry numbSkull&Boneheads. Then there's Nixon's machinations down the street when I worked at L'Enfant Plaza.

We need a female to strut her stuff these days. Especially since Obama was raised by only females. Maybe that's why he's squeaky clean. Everybody says so. No one can find anything "sinful" about him. He even published his 1040 I understand. Obama's wife looks pretty strong to me too. I'm independent because I don't see any difference in the parties ever since Skull&Bones. Do you think Obama would have voted for giving the President power to declare war? That's what I'd like y'all to give an opinion on. Seems right now the media thinks he would have voted no. I don't know the names of the others who voted no, do you? What's happened to them?

Y'all talking about sex and then you mentioned Obama. What's Obama got to do with sexual intimacy? The Republicans should be talking about the Republicans use of sexual intimacy with President Clinton. Y'all talked about Obama being "clean". So where am I off topic?

I'm always fascinated when a member of the media thinks he/she has the obligation to advance (biased) opinion as news. It's especially humorous when his background includes nothing more than a communications degree and disparate experience reporting on events - after the fact. What makes Brian Bolter think he has the background or experience to 1) presume he understands the McCain side of this non-story, or 2) make a judgment on the character of a bona fide hero? Perhaps it's all those awards he touts below his picture.
Call me crazy, but I'll choose a Congressional Medal of Honor for DOING something over press association awards for TALKING about other people doing things. John McCain (whom I do not like as a politician), gave himself to his country, supported his comrades, sacrificed and endured in ways only a handful of people will ever be able to comprehend.
When the Brian Bolters of this country seek to improve their own reputation by questioning someone else's through partial fact and innuendo, it is repugnant. And such a transparent attempt to advance a personal attack dressed in the guise of moral outrage is disgusting. What makes Mr. Bolter any better than he claims to believe the NYT to be? Perhaps a long look in the mirror is prescribed. If he looks hard enough, he might just see Edward R. Murrow spinning in his grave...

First they've been complaining in newletters from the media and on TV dicussios that the NYT has not continued the discussion and then when a media person does they complain. Oh well...

Well, guys...before I speak, you should know I support Hillary...however, I refuse to knock down a man just because he represents an opposing party. We should all remember the last time McCain ran for the republican candidate slot for the presidency. Some sleezy reporter ran a story that McCain had an illegitimate black daughter... and destroyed his campaign. Actually, his little daughter is a much adored adopted child from Africa. Now, here we are eight years later and the same tactic has poppped up again. Are we stupid or something? No one questions these tactics? What's wrong with us? I think we'd rather believe something bad about someone than the truth...and that's not right.
