BigSmooov's Blog

As you ride around the DC area, you would notice a change.  A person that once lived in DC 10 years ago would come back now and probably go into a shock.    What once were low income public housing projects are now condos.  What were once run down buildings from the riots of '68 are now social lounges and bars along the H St. corridor.  Single families are slowly being replaced with young professional "empty nesters." An abandoned wharehouse area is now the home of the new National's Stadium.  The financial crisis in DC from 10 years ago has turned around to a multi-million dollar surplus.  Yep...this beautiful city has definitly turned itself around......BUT FOR WHO!?!?

We all heard that old saying.  It's the one that goes "The more some things change, the more they stay the same."  That phrase comes to mind as I continued to look around the city's "change."  The DC public schools are still going through their issues.  The city is still demographically divided by either race and/or income brackets.  Murders and violent crimes are still high amoung the city's black  youth.  It's also getting to a point where some of the long time residence from the city are slowly finding themselves in a finacially strapped situation.  They are trying to continue living in the city with the high housing taxes and just the cost of living going up fast.   Which brings me right back to my original question.

Who's really feeling the economical boom of the District of Columbia?

In the Washington Post on April 14th an artical mentioned that 1 out of 3 working class families in DC are considered "The working Poor."  These are the people that work a legitimate job but still struggling to make ends meet.  Sure there are more jobs opening around the city...but lets just look at those jobs...shall we?   The Congress Hieghts development boast a new Target store which hired hundreds of people.  Come on now!!!  How much do you think they are getting paid?   National's New Stadium hired hundreds.  Do you really think that a ticket taker's salary will enable them to buy a home in DC?  The poorly monitored job training programs in DC are only equiped to train people for low end jobs that keeps the poor and under educated on the lower end of the "ECONOMICAL BOOM."

I'm all for people taking the initiative within themselves to change their surroundings and stop their finger pointing.  At the same time, when I look at schools in certain areas that have career programs that prepare their students to take advantage and achieve in the current economical change vs. other schools that are teaching students to be "dependant slaves" to the economical swing....I have to really ask this question.

WHO IS INTENDED TO PROSPER IN THIS ECONOMICAL SWING?

My boy Smoovie...welcome back. I've missed you.

The city is improving in leaps and bounds...the more gentrification the better the city gets. Isn't it GREAT!

Biggie S, you’re back! Are you fully recovered from the wounds and bruises inflicted on you last time you were here?

As I read your blog I keep asking myself what is his point? Does he have one? I will take your first paragraph to demonstrate how misguided you are. You write, “As you ride around the DC area, you would notice a change.” What is bad about that???? ”What once were low income public housing projects are now condos.” Sounds good to me! “What were once run down buildings from the riots of '68 are now social lounges and bars along the H St. corridor.” Is a reasonable person supposed to think this is a bad exchange? “An abandoned wharehouse (sic) area is now the home of the new National's Stadium” With the exception of the place housing a pretty lousy team, this is clearly an upgrade. “The financial crisis in DC from 10 years ago has turned around to a multi-million dollar surplus.” Now, I know even in your idiotic state, you couldn’t possibly think this is bad!

You may have been following the yellow brick road while you were away but unlike the Scarecrow you didn’t get a brain. Welcome back.

Alexis...don't you think you were a little tough on my BOY smoovie? Don't forget...he is a democrate.

Hey smoovie...progress in the city just means THE PLAN is working well.

Alexis7260....

Good to be back. Thank you. "The Point" I'm trying to make in this particular blog is that it is nice to have a wonderful (and welcomed) change in DC. I'm proud of the changes it's made so far. Now....the question that my blog is trying to get you to answer is why isn't the change felt in a positive manner by all.

Now do me a favor...go back and read the rest of my blog. It my help you to understand "my point" a little better.

Priveye....I miss you man!!! How are you holding up nowadays? Oh yeah...and for the record, I'm an "INDEPENDANT." A lot of my comments and opinions are often times sided with the Democrats but just remember I'm known for calling a dog...a dog and a cat...a cat.

BigSmooov, anyone who read that and didn't get the point, they have a closed mind. Sorry, but what you stated was to the point and didn't leave no room for "what is he talking about." With progression, not everyone is progressing. It's as simple as that.

Who is intended to prosper?

I would think the people actually better themselves instead of waiting for something to be handed to them. Work that Target job and go to classes at night for a better career!
You can't blame progress for being unfair to the ones who choose to lag behind.

Red-Dog1....good point. Let me ask you this though. How are they going to afford classes? With the Target job money?

Unfortunately times change and when property values go up due to progress in the area, some people have to adapt or move on. I used Target as an example, but I know there is a Metro system that allows many people to get around this city and there are many jobs other than the Target around the corner.
So like I said to keep up you have to be willing.
I know it's harsh and not fair to everyone, but as i learned very early in life. It's not fair one bit. You have to go and get it, it doesn't come to you. Sit back and you will be swept away.

My BOY lil smoovie....I don't believe the United Negro College fund was meant to help me get an education.

You right Red-Dog1. I'm not going argue on that one.

What I'm trying to explain in my blog is there is nothing wrong with progress. Like it or not, prices will increase. Look at the gas prices for example. LoL What some of the elected officials (elected by some of the people they are forcing out) have to realize is people put them in office for a positive change for ALL. No body wants to go back to the Marion Barry DC, but there are some people that would like to feel that the progress WILL included them.

Something as small as adding a program for students that will teach the kids how to gain financial independence and stability in ALL SCHOOLS instead of in "some" schools. That would show that EVERYONE IS included in the growth of DC.

My BOY lil smoovie...don't worry about the DC school system. As even you can plainly see THE PLAN is working in DC and eventualy THE PLAN will improve the school system.

Gooberpunk, I see you attended the same welfare-mentality college as bigsmoov.

As for how they can afford classes, biggie, they can do it like many others have done it: get a second job and save money for an education rather than non-essentials items they can’t afford. Most importantly, get over the entitlement mentality.

Priveye, hopefully "the plan" will be successfully completed very soon.

Alexis7260....I respect what you have to say. The insults are really not neccessary unless you want to show your true mentallity behind your words.

I see that you are really out of touch with what's going on. Not just in the city of DC but all around the major cities. Not everyone was as LUCKY as you. Yes, i said "lucky." A lot of people think they got to where they are because of hard work. Hard work is 60% of getting to where you are. 30% is who you know. Finally 10% is being in the right place at the right time to either have the opportunity to meet that person or being exposed to something that motivated you to take the path you dedicated your hard work too. Not everyone is as lucky as you are.

You should really take a look back at your life and see why you are blessed and be thankful for what you have.

My BOY smoovie....you left out that in your case it was because of affirmative actions programs that give jobs to certain folks!

Don't got there with "Affimative Action" Priveye. Prior to the '60's....whites had their version of "Affirmative Action" for hundreds of years! Now...if you really want to get technical with me, whites still do. They just do it in terms of "donating" money to universities to get their kid in the school. Their "Affirmative Action" is in the work place too. How many times have you seen half qualified whites get jobs because they knew someone that snuck them in by family affiliations.

New Jersey....my BOY smoovie...now I'm really impressed. Congraduations....I'm sure DC is a step up for you. The only good thing to come out of Jersey is a empty Gray Hound Bus.
