As you ride around the DC area, you would notice a change. A person that once lived in DC 10 years ago would come back now and probably go into a shock. What once were low income public housing projects are now condos. What were once run down buildings from the riots of '68 are now social lounges and bars along the H St. corridor. Single families are slowly being replaced with young professional "empty nesters." An abandoned wharehouse area is now the home of the new National's Stadium. The financial crisis in DC from 10 years ago has turned around to a multi-million dollar surplus. Yep...this beautiful city has definitly turned itself around......BUT FOR WHO!?!?
We all heard that old saying. It's the one that goes "The more some things change, the more they stay the same." That phrase comes to mind as I continued to look around the city's "change." The DC public schools are still going through their issues. The city is still demographically divided by either race and/or income brackets. Murders and violent crimes are still high amoung the city's black youth. It's also getting to a point where some of the long time residence from the city are slowly finding themselves in a finacially strapped situation. They are trying to continue living in the city with the high housing taxes and just the cost of living going up fast. Which brings me right back to my original question.
Who's really feeling the economical boom of the District of Columbia?
In the Washington Post on April 14th an artical mentioned that 1 out of 3 working class families in DC are considered "The working Poor." These are the people that work a legitimate job but still struggling to make ends meet. Sure there are more jobs opening around the city...but lets just look at those jobs...shall we? The Congress Hieghts development boast a new Target store which hired hundreds of people. Come on now!!! How much do you think they are getting paid? National's New Stadium hired hundreds. Do you really think that a ticket taker's salary will enable them to buy a home in DC? The poorly monitored job training programs in DC are only equiped to train people for low end jobs that keeps the poor and under educated on the lower end of the "ECONOMICAL BOOM."
I'm all for people taking the initiative within themselves to change their surroundings and stop their finger pointing. At the same time, when I look at schools in certain areas that have career programs that prepare their students to take advantage and achieve in the current economical change vs. other schools that are teaching students to be "dependant slaves" to the economical swing....I have to really ask this question.
WHO IS INTENDED TO PROSPER IN THIS ECONOMICAL SWING?
