A police officer was shot early Tuesday morning at an elementary school that is being used as a polling location in Prince George's County.

Two officers responded to a burglar alarm at Oaklands Elementary School in Laurel at about 2:30 a.m. The officers said they found a broken window and an intruder.  When the officer confronted the intruder, police said the man opened fire. A bullet grazed the officer's head, but the injury is not considered life-threatening.

The confrontation happened in the entry way of the school.  Investigators say the intruder entered through the school's media center.

Election judges arrived at the school at about 5 a.m. to set up for the day's voting, but were not allowed inside the school until after 6 a.m.

Major Andy Ellis from Prince George's Police says investigators worked quickly to complete their crime scene investigation and K-9 officers swept the school twice making sure there were no other thugs in the building

Election workers managed to get the site opened at about 7:10 a.m-- 10 minutes later than Maryland's 7a.m. Poll opening time. Many voters had arrived to the polling site as much as two hours early. Hundreds of voters were waiting in line when the doors opened.

The shooter remains at large.  Police did give me a description, but it was vague, it could be any thin black man in his 20's with low cut hair..  If I hear something more specific, i'll update.

About the officer, we don't know his name, but Major Ellis says he was EXTREMELY lucky-- this bullet grazed his head-- an inch or two in another direction and we would have been following a TOTALLY different story today.

NOW GO VOTE!!!

doc:

dawg doesn't understand that; Washington, D.C. is like Baghdad on the Potomac and most of their illegal and criminal activities are spilling over into PG County...

Now, I think they will go to work and do their jobs since one of their's has been assaulted with a bullet grazing his coconut...

Any other times you see them, they're just riding around and styling...

Why is it that all ills in the region are attributed by some to spill overs from DC? PrinceGeorge's County has long been known for its excesses in brutality and crime. DC has its problems but evry ill does not come from there. As far as the Messiah comment, the only "Mssiah" was born and died over 2000 years ago. Will you join with other Americans in accepting the will of the people and working with our "elected" leadership to improve the greatest country in the world?

Yo L-Backer, Man I know just what you're saying. Last night the wife sent me to the store and going west on Harry Truman, I'm telling you there was 7 PG patrol cars huddled together instead of patroling looking for criminals. But the first thing came to my mind was how stupid to huddled together. Like using a fishing net where there is a group of fish. You can get them all... AR15-Out

TomW:

I have read stat reports and, up to 54% of people being arrested for illegal activities in PG County has a District address... The violent crimes (i.e., Murder, Rape, etc..)has a 26.5% ratio with people committing these crimes are PG residents... Traffic contribute 15% and the remainder is classed under miscellaneous (i.e., public drunkenness, vagrancy, etc..). These stats were for fiscal year 2007...

I'm astonished that someone else [like you] is seeing what I see on a daily basis. I live behind Iverson Mall and, in the evenings, walk to the Mall via the lower level of the rear parking. Each day, I see 2-5 PG Police vehicles huddled together on the lower level and people are wondering and complaining about why the crime rate is so high...

They should take up the same stance that D.C. has implemented... Go to a neighborhood, park your vehicles and walk around for 15 - 20 minutes every 2- hrs unless you get a response call... It would more than likely address the fuel cost issue doing it this way…

I can only repeat mark Twain, "there are liars, damn liars and then there are statisticians." I am not calling you any of those things, just simply saying that the choice of statistics or resources they come from can skew the outlook. Remember, in some polls, sanctioned by one particular network, John McCain was ahead. As a life long DC Resident, i know that we do not go out to PG to commit crimes, too many strange things happen when incarcerated in the county. People get shot many times while they are handcuffed in the back of police cruisers; others die mysteriously in maximum security cells, the list goes on. So exactly who are the criminals?

LB: By the way I do understand DC and how it works, in the late 70s I was working for the company and was the chearfer and body guard of the Chairman of the American Bar Assc. CJS and was one of the very few people that could carry a firearm anywhere in the DC area or for that matter anywhere in the US. I also had to use it a couple of times which was not a fun time. Contrary to popular belief I really dont like to take another humans life but that was something that I was called on to do too many times.

I joined FOX 5 as a freelance reporter in July 2006 and boy did it feel good. I'm a local girl~ born and raised in NE DC's Riggs Park. I still remember when FOX 5's Morning Show first came on the air! I'm a proud DCPS graduate (Duke Ellington School of the Arts, class of 1995.) If my face looks at all familiar it may be because I hosted a show in high school that aired on DCPS channel 28 called "Excellence By Choice" for 2 years. Anywhoo~ I graduated from the University of North Carolina Charlotte in 1998, and have been working ever since to get home to DC to cover news in my hometown! My career has taken me to some interesting cities. I covered my share of hurricanes while working as a reporter at WSAV in Savannah, GA, fell in love with Alabama as an an anchor/reporter at WAAY in Huntsville, and discovered the magic of blues and bbq (and met my husband) as a reporter/fill-in anchor at FOX O&O WHBQ in Memphis, TN. I have 2 adorable sons Andrew Michael(2) and Brian Thomas(11mos) and my step-daughter Caitlyn(11) who splits her time between here and Memphis. I love spending time with family and enjoying my fair city! I hope you enjoy my blog as I attempt to share my perspective.
