There is a lot of critism of the hip hop culture and urban music these days.  You'll hear people saying that the lyrics and images send the wrong image about women, drugs and violence.  Images we want to keep our young people away from.  Well there are also concerned people raising these questions and seeking answers.  Local teacher and vocalist Lori Williams-Chisolm  is one of those people.  I want to tell you about an event that  I have been invited to be a part of.

It's called "Positive Music For Positive Minds."  Lori has assembled a panel of music experts to talk about the issues facing hip hop and its role in a lot of young lives.  The event is this Friday (5/30) at Wilson High School at 1:30 and put on with the support of the Wolf Trap Foundation Scholarship Program.  I applaud Lori and others like her trying to make a difference that will hopefully be reflected in the future generation.

Below is a list of the participants.  Hope to see you there!

The hip-hop industries sales have been on the decline in recent years due to the decrease in real artist and the increase of lyrics and images that are steering away from why this sound was created in the first place.

It was born when Curtis Blow, SugerHill Gang, and African Bambada came out in the late 70's and early 80's. It started to become an adolesent when Run DMC, the Fat Boys, and LL Cool J stepped into the place. It started to approch it's pre-teen years when it started to notice the ladies such as Salt n Pepa, MC Lyte, and Queen Latifah. It showed people that we had fun in the hood through acts like Kid & Play, Fresh Prince, and Heavy D. It started to be more aware of the political issues through people like Public Enemy, KRS One, and NWA. It matured more when acts like Naughty By Nature, Redman, Snoop Dogg, and Outkast came along. I would hate to think it's peaked with acts like 2Pac, Biggie, and Big Punisher. So I pray that Kanye West, Jay Z, Common, and Lupe Fiasco can continue giving us the true example of what being a true lyricis is all about. I can only hope artist like them can carry the hip-hop industry past it "troubled teen" years before it's steered into the path.
