Watching the Idol contestants sing Neil Diamond songs just reminded me of one thing.  Don't try to sing Neil Diamond songs unless ...of course..you are Neil Diamond.

They all sounded like imitators to me.  David Cook was alright, but he was the exception in my humble opinion.

On a related note...I really think Jason Castro is going home tonight.

Oh, I hope you are right about Jason. He is the most disinterested contestant I've ever seen on Idol. Most of them act like they really want to win to further their careers. He just sits back and barely opens his mouth to sing the same sort of song every week.

By far, the best performance of the night was Brooke singing "I Am...I Said". And that's when she gets voted off. America got it SO wrong again. This just may have been the best performance of the entire season, and if you haven't heard the studio version, check it out; it is even more breathtaking.

I am a lifelong Neil Diamond fan, and I have wanted a Neil theme night on Idol for as long as I have been watching the show. I enjoyed hearing each of the finalists do their own take on Neil's songs.

I liked Jason's performances, especially "Forever in Blue Jeans", which happens to be my favorite Neil Diamond song. He made it his own, yet he captured the gritty country-pop feel of the original.

Also outstanding was David Cook, whom I predict will win it all. Like Diamond, Cook has a raspy, rockish edge to his voice, so he was just made to sing these songs. I was really hoping he would sing one of Neil's better known songs like "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show" (which he fortunately got a solo on during the Wednesday night group medly), "Holly Holy", or "Cherry Cherry", but "I'm Alive", while not familiar to most people, was actually a perfect choice for David, since it has that signature Diamond sound. "All I Really Need Is You" is another great lesser-known song that David sounded just gorgeous on.
